What I get from it - Ian is not too fond of how human corruption finds its way into places where it shouldn't belong, like organized religion. He tends to critique society with both blunt directness and with satire.
Listening to Tull albums from start to finish in song order is the best way to go if possible. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I was impressed on my recent re-read of the Bible how much of Paul's epistles are warnings and denunciations of those seeking positions of power in the very early church to advance themselves rather than the message of love that Jesus taught. It has ever been such. Any movement, organization, etc. is a target for people seeking their own interests at the expense of others.

Guitarist Martin Barre is JT's secret weapon. The last track on the album, Wind Up, sums up Ian's attitude pretty well. He's not angry with God, or commenting on His existence, so much as angry at the attitude of organised religion, which tells you what to think, pats you on the head and tells you whether you're a good or bad boy, and puts little store in what Jesus or God actually said. Religion has, in the words of the current song "locked [God] in a golden cage" and bent His word to do what the preachers want.

Yes, the song is criticizing organized religion(the church of England specifically), but, it can be applied to all organized religion and/or people who rely too much on religion/clergy instead of thinking for themselves regarding God/religion/etc.
Musically, pure Tull, subtle changes that have powerful effect. When Martin Barre comes in with the electric guitar---mercy, almost metal, not just hard rock
Our host's interpretation is pretty much spot on

Our passion was Roller Skating at our Rink in VA near DC. For $5 each we had our entire future lives completely altered FOREVER!

If you find the time, check out Jethro Tull that was released on a two-part video of their live performance at the Isle of Wight festival in England back in the summer of 1970 almost 54 years ago of their 1968 song "Dharma for One". Tull's original drummer Clive Bunker gives an outstanding drum solo on part-two of "Dharma for One". The frontman Ian Anderson is one hell of a showman even though Ian doesn't play his renowned flute in this song. At any rate, "Dharma for One" of both parts was smokin' hot and reveals Tull's talent as a progressive British rock group during the early days of their career. By the way, Tull played "My God" at his concert also among others which were fire.💫🎤🎸🎹🥁🔥☮🎧

Anderson is expressing his own beliefs and desires for a more personal and individual connection with spirituality. He finds solace in Nature and rejects the idea of religious dogma, emphasizing the importance of personal experience and introspection in determining one's own spiritual path with a critique of societal norms and the influence of religious institutions. As a teenager then coming to terms with my own views & indoctrinated understanding, this song was very enlightening & courageous, but it also carried with it, an ethos already within our late 60's/early 70's generation.

Aqualung! What an LP! I bought it in my teens in the 70es.The High School I was in was ruled by Maristas brothers and the lyrics of this song made helped me to have more reasons to stand against them organized forms of religion..I wouldn´t like to offend nobody but as Mr.Anderson says in the first verse I think people grabs the idea of God and make it"bend to their religion" instead of looking for the God inside.Electric guitar is played by the great Martin Barre.Another of my JT favorites is the "Minstrel in the gallery" LP,you might check it out.Cheers!

He's actually talking about how men use God for their own purposes and not for the purpose that God had intended.
"People what have you done.. you locked him in his golden cage, made him bend to your religion, him resurrected from the grave"
"Lock them in his (golden cage) made him bend to your religion"
means man-made religions like these prosperity gospel teachers who teach prosperity and riches (golden cage) of this world but not of repentance of our sins.

10:00 So the "graven-image you-know-who" in live shows is sometimes explicitly said "the graven-image Catholic." He's basically saying they're not even proper Christians because they just took all the saints and treat them like the way the ancient people prayed to different gods. So he's making fun of how they have to offer all their formulaic prayers and supplications, and venerate the saints instead of actually living out a biblical Christianity.
And this is important because it adds a general touch. He's not JUST going after the Church of England, but all of the organizations that claim to speak for god without any real authority. "Wind Up" is the next part of this. Contains the line "he's not the kind you have to wind-up on Sunday." Another criticism of how religious people treat God.
