it do hit you really hard on first year on art college. when you realize all around you are even more talented than you might be very overwhelming, but at least you are not giving up. better not make the same mistake like me. better not giving up on whatever path you choosing. better prepared for the next semester AND for your next journey out of college. same thing happened to me when i was in the summer camp in England (i am not originally from there). before i thought i had a pretty decent english level but in the first day of that camp i realised i was never even close to a “beginner” level, i was basically 0.01%. everyone in my group of 12 people was just the best or at least somewhat good and i just couldn’t even understand a word, it was all a mumble-jumble for me.
but then i eventually got the school there and studied and lived in Brighton for 3 years, and after that i’m still improving my English.
at the moment i thought it was impossible but after all this time and work i definitely feel proud that i didn’t quit and accomplished all of this
Wow, it's mature accepting that you were wrong..but who knows. maybe that decision will put you in a better place than if you stayed there. God knows best.
She's soo honest and humble. Her positive vibes are contagious. That's why I'm smiling. People are all about masks. You are totally right. And this side of you under your mask is beautiful. It's okay to fall sometimes. What matters is how you grow as a person.
i gotta say, this brings back a lot of memories from my first year at calarts! it's crazy how similar some of our experiences are. the bits about being surrounded by so much talent, how surreal it is to be in LA, loneliness, even the places that were important to us: i would often visit that blue bench by the "edge of the world" when i needed some space during my first year as well.

i feel like realising that maybe others are better than you or that you 'suck at art' is so important as long as you keep trying, this is really comforting because I just sat my practice art exam and feel really behind skill wise compared to everyone in my fine art course, thank you for this
I loved this video, Veda! I wish I had your level of maturity when I moved to another country to go to art school. But I really fell into the trap of comparison, hustling, self-blame and never feeling good enough, being overwhelmed by basically everything. The packed schedules made me feel as if I didn't even have time to reflect, yet alone change.

I'm honestly going to take this as advice for my high school lol. I'll be taking an animation class there, and it would be my first time in a room full of a bunch of other kids who have the art skill that I do (maybe even more!). I know I still have a long way to go with animation, I still am young. But I've got to enjoy it while it lasts. (Thank you for sharing your perspective about this and giving us the advice for anyone who was interested in animation!)
its so cool seeing you come this far and this summer i am doing my first animation class, and i feel underqualified but what u said that its okay to suck makes me now just wanna get better more :DD its not as big as on a college level lol but i guess this is like my first step and seeing how u felt the same way i am right now is just relaly inspiring to me >:O every one of your videos is just really motivating and congrats on getting through the first year!!! i wish u good luck for the rest of them too >:OO

definitely felt the growth part, first year of uni and adjusting was really hard at first but once you get into a groove, it's hard to lose that rhythm(?) GOOD LUCK SAKU!!! STAY STRONG!!

Congratulations on your first year at cal arts 🎉🎉! I really relate to your talk about fearing change. As someone entering their midpoint through high school, I am so unsure about my future. I’ve been in a state of stillness, waiting for the answer to come to me, although it never will. I’m at a standstill between choosing to pursue a creative career or to follow the “safe” option. I just feel like no matter what I choose, I will never be qualified or enough. There’s also family pressure that doesn’t help :/ But really, thank you for sharing your experience. It makes me and many others feel encouraged ❤
