I don't know if you would see this comment? I appreciate your effort on trying to re-do Steve Hanks 's master piece!

Wonderful vid. Master Hanks used burnt sienna and ultramarine blue a lot, the technique he achieved was with granulating pigments and often used washes up to 10 layers he was a master and his was amazingly beautiful. No stippling was used just mixed washes and let the colors granulate, he did try different boards but primarily used rough paper 425 gsm if I remember correctly.

@@henrywilliamriffeii7425 Thanks .... i wondering how he did it.

Not quite true. He used Aquabord, a clay surfaced material that allows the artist to lift colours even when dry. Multiple washes and glazes can therefore be used without affecting the surface texture. It's a technique that can't be used with paper.

I, too, have tried to repaint and learn Steve Hanks paintings. They are quite a challenge and tend to require enormous attention to detail. I have not tried the paintings on cold press paper. My attempts were all on hot press paper, working some wet on wet for skin tones. (I worked a lot wetter for the skin tones than you did, then added a little dryer layers. I might even try a stencil brush. I absolutely love his paintings and the transparency of his colors!
For the background I wonder if he poured it to make the transitions smoother.
I’d like to know how and where he uses masking fluid because I cannot work with it well for the whites in the hair.

I will certainly update or revisit Mr. Hanks' technique and art as he was such a favorite of mine. As I have stated, I have no authority or first hand knowledge about his technique, pure speculation on my part. I enjoy trying to decode the technique of those I want to paint like. I have become obsessed with master copies. Thank you sir for watching and I appreciate your input.

Thank you for this video. Its so hard to find any information about how Steve hanks did such wonderful work with watercolour. Thanks for taking he time and effort to show your ideas on this. I'v become near on obsessed with finding out this is done lol

  • @RichardsModellingAdventures

In my opinion one of the best artists ever. From what I can gather he didn't use paper at all. He used a product called Ampersand Aquaboard or similar

I have heard artists mention using just a dab of white gouache paint mixed in water color to gain more control & tighter borders.....Considering the skin tones & values, this could b a possibility.

Good Point. The danger of using gouache is the opacity. Changes the look of the rest of the glazes. I do two different demos of the same subject on my video of Nick Alm. Check it out when you get a chance. Thanks for the comment. -Henry

Never heard of Steve Hanks before. OMG, what amazing work! I don't work in WC but his paintings are so inspiring! What book(s) do you have about him? BTW, your version is lovely, too! :-)

Thank you Gloria. Steve Hanks was incredible. I based most of this off of the book "The Art of Steve Hanks - Poised Between Heartbeats". I also have an upcoming video on a young Swedish artist Nick Alm. He is a master of watercolor and oil. We will be exploring his technique.

I think Steve was inspired by Hugh Hefner publications. No wonder he died from heart failure!
You might be interested in an American artist named Bricher whose watercolours are outstanding.

Lol, indeed. Even if it kills you!
He certainly used an abundant amount of flesh tints rendering the upper torso regions of his subjects.
