- The Donkey Sanctuary is an international animal welfare charity, based in the UK, working to protect and care for donkeys and mules.
What started off as a routine check of cattle tags on a Meath farm by Department of Agriculture (DAFM) officials turned into a full blown donkey rescue with a wholly unexpected twist in the tail - Storm Desmond. The farmer in question admitted to having ‘’a couple of donkeys’’ on the land; however a quick walk of the 40 acres saw this increase to 15 donkeys, with some very obvious hoof issues. The donkeys were extremely timid and difficult to approach so Donkey Welfare Adviser Cathy Griffin was called in for advice and support. The weather gods threw their worst weather at her (Storm Barney) when she visited: storm force winds, rain, hail, sleet, even snow but the show had to go on. She found 17 donkeys in all many of which had severely overgrown hooves: some certainly looked like they had never been trimmed. Some of the mares looked like they might be pregnant but there was no adult stallion to be seen, alive or dead on the land. The Donkey Sanctuary Welfare team worked with My Lovely Horse (MLH, an equine welfare group) and made a plan to round up, load, transport and assess the donkeys at their base locally.
It is a joy for me to send The Donkey Sanctuary money every month to help with their care, and to continue rescuing the ones that are suffering. My love for donkeys originated in childhood, and now, not able to do the actual care work for them, I am happy to help with at least some funding. Thank you to all the donkey sanctuary staff for your kind care of these animals.

Is so sad to see people been so cruel with animals. Poor donkeys and they are one the most gently animals in nature but due to physical abuse these animals are so nervous. I am so glad there is a Sanctuary in UK where they can protect some of them and i am so grateful for the rescuers. Myself i do use my spare time and money when i have to rescued abandon dogs.

Omg, this is so sad,I'm so affected by this.There poor little feet.But this year I've adopted a donkey and so has my brother and little sis,the donkey sanctuary is the best place for these donkeys. All donkeys should be saved,every donkey deserves a nice home,adopt a donkey now at "The donkey sanctuary.org.uk!

Thank you for all you do. We took over a local dog pound from the town into a nonprofit and greatly improved our town strays and abandoned dogs into new homes not 10 day euthanasia. That was over 20 years ago.
I used to ignore the donkey but now I love the donkey.
This horrific abuse of these innocent animals should not have happened. But I'm glad at last they were rescued and hopefully will be in good hands
It's an absolute disgrace in this day & age that donkeys are treated like this. Thank God for the Donkey Sanctuary & it's wonderful staff.

I do not understand why they neglected so badly the donkeys??? They could sell them!! Why to behave like this???
@@VSP4591 nobody wants to buy donkeys these days. They are put in fields & expected to fend for themselves. People think they're very hardy animals but their coats are not waterproof & their hooves need to be filed down every 8-10 weeks. They need shelter etc. It's disgraceful how they're treated.

It wasn't this rescue but I volunteer at the Scottish borders donkey sanctuary in Scotland and 2 years ago we rescued 27 donkeys from Ireland and they had very overgrown hooves and very underweight and we rehomed most of them but the remaining ones are now in good health and are still very scared of people but are starting to come round

Hello from Royal hill Tara county Meath☺ the donkey sanctuary were about killmessen Meath I gave u donation today vets in trim seen ur box ☺ going to get big bag carrots for donkey have look at his feet ☺ plenty donkeys about near Tara ☺ they need a company 🎅 is there course for donkey ☺

I do want some donkeys, but I live in Australia and they are not plentiful like in Ireland .
for fencing is forbidden wire mesh, you must build a cement fence 1.80 height
how can anyone let this happen to any animal, i'know the irish dont look after donkeys as this as gone on for some years all over ireland not looking after tham. i'am anglo-irish and it makes me feel sick that they do this and dont care .

They say rescue, then they own them up until that vary rare day someone with enough money for the ISPCA to speak to wants one. Boycott the ISPCA. There are many great places that take in needy critters that care for them, not govt. sponsored corporations who only want €€€€€....
