- "Embark on an extraordinary journey with us as we venture into the ancient lands of Sibiloi and Koobi Fora, untouched landscapes resonating with timeless beauty and a sense of solitude. In this thrilling expedition, we blended Toyotas and Land Rovers, even daring Subaru Foresters, exploring where few dare to tread. Our faithful 1KD Toyota Hiace faced incredible challenges, but our team's resilience prevailed, marking our most unforgettable expedition yet!
In 'RACING THE DARKNESS at Chalbi Desert- Cradle of Mankind Expedition II - Part 3,' we set our sights on Koobi Fora, our northernmost destination. Our return journey through North Horr to North Horr Sand Dune which Broline christened 'Suguta Ndogo,' followed by a breathtaking drive through Chalbi Desert, where the night's arrival led us to a thrilling 'race' against the dark.
We navigated the Chalbi Desert's shadows, pushing forward to Kalacha before exploring the enigmatic 6km (some say its 24km?) straight Rock Dune. Our path continued eastward, encountering challenges that tested our vehicles' mettle, leading to a serpentine belt issue for the Toyota Hiace 1KD near Marsabit. Nonetheless, our spirits remained high as we celebrated our epic 1800-kilometer journey, culminating at Marsabit National Park.

I believe people underestimate how capable the Forester is. I have done my fair share of offroading and It's surprisingly capable. You get the benefit of lesser weight than the SUVs but you will make it. Hail Symmetrical AWD!

It did very well. Plus the driver/owner is an engineer, and we had the tools and parts to repair it and muscle to tow it like in the last 50kms to Marsabit when it broke its serpentine belt a second time.

Haha! The kids love it! But also ensure that the cars (even old ones) have working AC, helps greatly. And plenty of cold drinks. We all carry portable 12v fridges.

Haha! We are really trying. Both Jimny owners are private AH (there are 2 Jimny owners in our community). So many guys have requested for details on the Jimnys, performance, fuel etc.

Lesson learnt. A landcruiser will take you anywhere where a Landover cannot!

Rutto/Broline, has any Nissan Xtrail ever been part of your offroad trips? If yes, how did it/they perform?
Yes, we have had an Xtrail on one of our toughest trips, the Jade Sea Expedition. It did well, very well. Plus it had been prepared well for the trip with heavy duty shocks and coil springs which lifted it a little up and improved its ground clearance, All Terrain tires, roof rack, carried a tool box with tools and spare parts that actually came in handy when it broke a stabilizer link which was promptly replaced by a spare, among other things.
