Great trip, Josh, and thanks for the kind words. I had a blast! It was fun working that weak CW to get ZL and JA in the log summit-to-summit. It was chilly but we dealt with it and made for a fun weekend. Thanks for being the impetus for this fun adventure.
You need to find an EME station that works CW... I am betting you could copy the weak ones! 2m EME CW is half magic half skill LOL 1296 is easier, stronger signals...
You’re the man Adam!
I wanted some of that Lasagna you made!
Was the S.African station actually in Namibia? If so I heard him full 59 in Colorado but so many going after him he never picked me up.
This was shot in 4k, 60 fps, so if you watch it that, I encourage it!
I love 4k now that YT enabled zooming up to 8x on mobile. I can see every hair, zit, and pixel on the 7300 screen :)
It's awesome to see you guys get together and have a blast. Makes me want to get some of the other east coasters together for a campout.
You should!
Im Down
If there’s a good part to not having family over the holidays, it’s that I get to go camping with my dog and play tacti-cool/ham radio guy in the woods. This will be my first time hiking in the dark with night vision and I’m very excited! Baofeng will always be attached to me along with other supplies (not forgetting the tipi tent with wood stove for comfort). You have access to lovely land and great people. Thanks for sharing! Feels like I’m tagging along with y’all
I LOVE THIS… From I was a kid, my father have radios etc so I grow up around radios.
Awesome! I got to see what I missed during the day on Friday. That weekend was so calming for the soul. Off-roading, camping, perfect weather ,sunrises, sunsets, food, radio, friends and a dog!
Best part: Dog + friends + fun. Good, clean fun. Well, dirty, dusty, muddy, grimey fun is A-ok👌🏼!
Thanks for being there Kevin!
Packing like post-traumatic Tom Hanks after being rescued in Castaway. But hey, car camping is always about overpacking gear. That's why it's so fun. Thanks for sharing this!
Great to get Adam on CW, and you on SSB. Didn’t realize it was the camp out at the time. Looks like it was a blast! 73!

Man, how I wish my local ham radio club did cool things like this. KF7VML.
28:21 LOL! I was sitting on my couch using the mic through the laptop for that contact! Glad you guys had a blast and thanks for the contact.
Ahhh I wondered why you sounded the way you did!

Video was shot on a Sony FX30, 4k/30FPS. If you can run it full res, tell me what you think in the comments! Blame the lowlight darks on CZcams compression :D
This trip looks like so much fun. There were too many mountains in the way to get you on 2m from San Diego. I want to join you guys for the next trip down here, but it looks like I already have another camping trip booked. I do SAR with Adam, and you are right that his skills and knowledge of everything he does are amazing and inspiring.
Nick! Try and make it in April! I know you guys are always busy, but we'll have a date here shortly. Maybe you can make it work?
Looked like a great team event.
Another superb video. Thank you.
M0DSK
Nice to see Kevin. Been missing his videos.
Funny enough I was up on Thomas mountain this same weekend and drove past your camp and radio setup on my way to the summit in my Jeep looking for a yellow-post site. I was wondering what you were all up to with all the radio equipment. Pretty cool that I stumbled across this video now that I've started getting interested in HAM and GMRS radio. It's awesome how far you can reach with the HF setup. I've been appreciating all the videos you've made and the community you have grown, keep up the good work and maybe I'll see ya out on the trail someday.
Hah. That’s pretty cool!
I think my head exploded every time Adam talked tech. Hopefully I'll learn what all that means someday. haha This is so cool!!
Man, I love those spider web antennas. So cool ^_^ -- One of these days I hope to learn and master CW/Morse. Such a neat skill to have.
I have one of the oldschool fold up Coleman camp ovens. It packs pretty flat and then unfolds in to a cube. It isn't heavily built or insulated at all, so it's pretty underpowered on the actual Coleman stove, but the big high powered Camp Chef stove gets it up the high 400's. Have definitely baked cakes at deer camp in cold weather.
Also, this looks like it was a blast. When my boys are big enough to drag on this kind of thing, will definitely need to organize this kind of thing with some of the PNW crew.
Loved watching Adam on CW - I wish I could do that!
You are living the Dad-Bot dream Josh , thank you for this content , what a blessed Friday night !
lol dad bot?
I enjoyed watching you and Adam freeze your nads off for the sake of some good camping and sota! Fun times.
Glad you enjoyed it
If I could give it two thumbs up I would. Thank you for shareing what the rest of us missed out on.
All the best and 73 W6XYZ
Thank you!
can’t wait to see the rest of the trip! need to steal ideas for my own adventures :D
This makes me want to become active again... POTA /SOTA looks like a lot of fun.
Become radio-active!
Today is the day I watched someone do Morse code on YT live. A first! Awesome. Thanks for this. Looks amazing up there!
What an amazing pursuit! I'm just getting my basic kit together and looking forward to getting on the air. Thanks Josh.
Hey Josh, as a fellow xterra owner and relatively new ham, I'd love to see a walk around of your truck.
It's just a 2012 Pro4X, not much to talk about :D
Thanks for sharing, and fun to experience a glimpse from this great outdoor adventure! 73, James WA7JNJ
Looks like an amazing time! So much fun! And great to see Adam get a ZL station! One of these days I'll work a hamtuber though it will likely be ft8 for me lol
If you hit me up on a live stream I’ll point at you. I do well into ZL from home.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse That's so awesome, I will do sometime. Cheers!
Gotta ❤ the camp chef
Amateur radio and backroad trails. Excellent! Reminds me of Gil’s video. 73 de W5SWX
Nice. Really liked the still with the sun coming through the hexbeam.
Love this series!
Would love to to this someday, great fun! De WO8USA🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Cool trip, J-Dawg & crew. Looking forward to the next vids!
Adam is definitely a positive, smiling force! He AND his oven are top notch! Thanks Josh for sharing this video. 73 de K0WHW @Bill-HRT
Love this style of video Josh - looks like you guys had a massive amount of fun! and 5/9 for the Buddihex!
Thank you!! We’ll have to plan a Buddihex to Buddihex contact!!
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Well... funny you say that... I'm planning to put mine up on Sunday for a video (Saturday your time)
That looked like the highway to our 4x4 trails
Awesome video josh,ones like that,the longer the better,just a great job,that all of y'all did,73s, kb0uzz
Thanks 👍
Shepherd's pie is made with lamb. If it's made with beef, it's called cottage pie. Trivial pursuit info you never knew you needed.
Or if you have a local restaurant that serves both. Both are delicious! (the real dish, not the dehydrated stuff)
Great spot and would have been fun to run into hams nerding it up. I could learn from hams that don’t screw with your radio setting while showing you.
That definitely looks like a blast.
Indeed!
Great video Josh. Thank you for sharing your adventure.
Great channel!
I love the sheperds , it's not good lol. Looks like you all had a good time, I wish i wasn't working that weekend! 73
Chuck! We missed you out there! I hope you consider joining us in April!
I liked and appreciate this video, but I'm glad to be warm all of the time. Shame that there's not a single SOTA site in the entire state of Florida because that looked fun. de W4POT 73
What fun!. And , as a Nissan mastertech, it's nice to see the last and best generation of Xterra making the trek. Much missed and coveted vehicles!.
I truly love that Xterra! It’s always been rock solid.
They always stop making the good vehicles now the full size NV cargo vans are gone I wonder if the Titan is next. 73!
@@tonyd6884 l believe it will be. Sales are extremely low
sooo glad u added to your weekend livestream. Eggsalent sunset.
Frigging awsome...I swear to God. 💯👍🙋♂
Thanks!
Thanks for the QSO! Nice activation! 73
That looks like a great time.
We had a blast!
Fun video - thanks for sharing the adventure!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
thank you all.
Fun trip. I need a CW decoder as my brain can't learn it. Lol
More of these outdoor events! Hoping to make the next one
Whata a great time. 100% core ham radio fun
Thanks for the videos!
Some people have a bugout bag. Josh has a bugout vehicle.
This looks really fun. I would love to do something like this.
second the 10m comment on screen, it's been wide open in Michigan the past few weeks.
Excellent video, loving this type of content. Randy (NotaRubicon) would love these Four-wheeling videos. Great job Josh, I hope to get you in log someday. DE KW4LU
I don’t think are trail was rugged enough for Randy!
The first weekend I'm not on 10 meters all day..... Dang!, from Utah.
Wait until Day 3!
76 gas... Baller ;-P Bummed I could not make this one too. Looked like a great time. Hope to make the next one.
Next time! Missed you out there!
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Absolutely. Will have our house build in the rear view by then… or the wife says I won’t be around to worry about camping or radios…I kid 🙂
Hi Josh,
Great video. I received a HamAlert and was listening for the group, but heard nothing here on the east coast. Who owned that Go Kit? Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
It’s mine. There are videos on my channel for it.
Great video!
Dang, I'm guessing Pink and me at 3x3 didn't make for good audio in the video. To be fair, I had to kick on the preamp on our end to hear you, Josh, but thanks for the QSOs!
Which day did we make contact?
@@HamRadioCrashCourse IIRC, we got you on back to back days, first on 10, then on 15. But I've slept since then, so I don't remember the sequence.
super video good job
Super fun! I plan to do something similar this spring on a backpacking trip (smaller scale of course). What app are you using for your logging?
HAMRS.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thank you Josh!
Wa6ols Marv here.what freq.
A group after my own heart
Do you have plans for the box for your IC7300? Looks very cool.
I find it amuzing that most people are careful about posting personal info on the internet, blocking out plates numbers, serial numbers and addresses and yet hams will gladly throw out their call signs and the call signs of others with zero concern about privacy.
2:45 ... and that's the better road?!
It's pretty much the only road in for the last ten miles :D
Bugout? Good luck with that.
We had a great time.
What’s the best Bluetooth wireless headset/earbud for Yaesu ft5d?
Good evening Sir! I was wondering if there's any way that I can share/lend my callsign with my Dad while he gets his license? And if so, how may I do it? Any advice is much appreciated.
He can operate under your privileges, using your callsign when you are physically there with him as a control operator.
How much is gas per gallon there? 3.49 here in Oklahoma.
I noticed your 2m isn’t in the go box. Cutting down on the weight?
Nah. It was pulled to work on another video.
any advive for good solar panels out of what you guys where running up there?
Power Film.
When did you film this? I made a contact with WB6EDK on my way home from HRO Sat 11/12.......he was on thomas mountain with a 10 element yagi. Probably before though due to editing. UPDATE.... I totally talked to the dude with the Yagi. Same radio, same mountain.......about 1130-12pm I was in Chino in my car on my 2730a
Yup. I shot this last weekend :D
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I see it's total drive up. Gonna have to take the 991a up there with my elk and buddistick.
What hat are you wearing? Looks warm.
A Wool Waltz cycling cap
do you have a rotator for the hex?
Yes. The Buddistick has a rotator.
I am looking for about your product place lace me a message. When I post this, I am looking for more I am looking for more information no this . Looking for no this have this video. How can find one .
What are you looking for?
I want to send the podcast an email. Where are the links? You literally said on the June podcast that Catholics call the Holy Spirit the Holy Ghost. Nope nobody says that. Like most things you are usually 60 to 80% accurate. In don’t wanna use my 5 star apple review to point this out so where are the email links?
Hmmm, grew up with the Holy Ghost in a Catholic School and in an Irish family
What. Freq.
If Armageddon happens while you’re up there, you’re set. You do have enough beer and coffee,RIGHT?! Too bad the USFS didn’t build water bars into the last stretch of road. It wouldn’t have a ditch running down it if they did. Pro tip. Always ad about 10%more water to dehydrated foo, stir well and make sure it soaks for full 10 min or what they recommended . They are always mush. Bring pepper powder and black pepper. They are bland.
Adam working that CW... that was almost EME level CW!!! Not an easy copy!
Yeah. Very hard!
It was pretty desperate! 😝
Great video looks like you guys had a blast. W4ZTX
We did!
I enjoy the QSOs, 9N0001SWL
Thank you!
Looks like fun! The BuddiHEX is AWESOME! I finally got mine, and am loving it! Can't wait to try it out for Winter Field Day! DE K7RLN
All, have a good DX. 73/F8MGW
