What are your thoughts on it?
i think Cynthia Erivo is 37 a little old to be playing a girl
It was awful. It was yet another trailer of a musical that didn't state that it was a musical. It didn't show the cast singing or dancing, which means that anyone that doesn't already know that it's a musical would go into it under misleading marketing, much like Wonka last year. And cutting a musical in two is just stupid, especially since the trailer showed scenes that only happened in the second act of the show (Defying Gravity is the Act 1 closer).
The nigare green now?
I’m biased I’m a huge book series and musical fan. I’m loving what I’m seeing. Nice nods to different people and Fieryo is supposed to be blue but I guess they wanted to change that aspect and yes I’ve seen the musical multiple times.
Hollywood ruins everything
They should have been done this years ago with Edina and Kristen. We'll see how this one is. Hope they dont F it up.
Based on the trailer alone, they already fkd it up
Its a movie.. the actors rarely make or break a movie. Its a shitty script in 99 % of the time.
I agree...time flies. I would have been interested in an animated so Kristen and Idina could voice them still.
It's very rare Broadway performers get to do do their thing on screen.😢
They didn’t need to do this. Honestly, I love the theatre. When I Saw Wicked, part of what made it amazing was the way they designed the stage as a clock. VFX are overused. There’s some things that require an element of realism to make them seem more magical. The stage production has so many practical effects that really draw you into Oz, even though you’re just a person in a chair. I’d much rather them film a stage production of Wicked…
Honestly, a film recording of a stage production would be wonderful!
@@cc227able can you imagine getting the cinematic filming techniques applied to performers of that caliber? It would be absolutely breathtaking! I just don’t understand why they would do this, instead of honoring the medium that made it so famous

This actually looks good though, and majority of Wicked fans collectively agree. 🤔
Have you read the novel? It's so much better than the musical. I'm hoping the film will go beyond the musical which just seems to be about belting a riffs. Hope the film changes your mind
You didn't mention all the talk about Ariana's eyebrows lol
🤣👍
I wish they had gotten Tim Burton to do a straight adaptation of the book instead of recreating the stage musical. Haven’t seen the musical, but Gregory Maguire wrote a great book!
i absolutely love the musical and i have since i was 9 lol
There are MULTIPLE books and they are all really great. This could have be bigger than Harry potter if they had done it right!
Wicked was the first musical I saw on Broadway. I like Cynthia and Ariana individually, but not together in these roles. Plus since they're supposed to be roommates wizard university, they should've cast people that looked to be in each other's age group.
they're both in their 30s
It's prob not bugging most people. But 30 and 37 is still a big gap. They wouldn't be in school at the same time. To me, I can see the age difference when they're next to each other and makes it hard to see how they'd end up in each other's lives. Ariana has a baby face too. So tends to look yonger than she actually is
@@tonialston1968that is my feeling too. Honestly, I kinda wanted to see Ariana as Elphaba and Dove Cameron as Glinda. That being said, I love Cynthia, and I think she’ll do an amazing job.
They're too short and bleached. Washed away 😂
Why didn't they title the movie: Wicked - Part 1?
The 2nd film will be titled "Wicked: For Good" not Wicked Part 2
@@jayd7669ah makes sense
To trick people into seeing it.
The reason is because they're _already_ terrified by how badly this is gonna _bomb_ with the force of a thousand exploding suns (because they decided to make a movie with She-Hulk in it), so they don't wanna scare even _more_ (potential) viewers away by warning them that this is only _half_ a movie!😄
Because they know everyone hates it when they split movies like this into two.
This movie will def make money imo. I've seen tons and tons of fans of the book and musical super excited to see this
It's so odd to see naturally brunette Arianna as a washed-out monotone blonde. Her bleached eyebrows are throwing off the entire symmetry of her face.
Not sure Ariana Grande is the best choice for playing a "Good Witch"
Are you kidding me, she is
Realistically, my expectations for the actual film are low since they will have to add material. But honestly, I’m more excited about the cast recording than anything else. Cynthia Erivo has one of the best voices of our generation.
Same here
The one line you hear ariana say in the trailer sounds jist like the voice she used for kat and then again for penny in hairspray which leaves me worried that her acting isn't up to the task.
2 parts? FML I've had to wait this long just to see A movie, and now I find out it's only going to be half and then I have to wait what, another 20 years for the second half?
Oh my gosh it does look like a skittles commercial
Or an SNL skit
"Taste the rainbow' 🌈 🌈.
No really, I'm not joking, you will comply or submit to 're-education'
I'm disappointed they didn't cast any real witches for this movie... or did they?
I personally feel everyone at Shiz looks way too old. They’re supposed to be in early years at college. Jonathan, Cynthia and Ariana are in their 30’s. In addition, I don’t like how all the costumes are trying to be like the Wizard of Oz instead of embracing the color palette of the musical. Like why is Elphaba dressed completely in black at the beginning instead of the iconic blue outfit with the hat?
I don’t know. I could keep going but like…I’m just worried.
Okay. I don't want to make any pre-screening judgements but there are definitely some things I would've done differently, like I would've made it all one movie with an intermission for theatrical release only. I think Cynthia Erivo is super talented, but I don't know if she's the right one for Elphaba. I think she should've done "The Color Purple" instead of Fantasia, and I know Idina Menzel is 52 but I still would've had her as Elphaba with makeup and visual effects de-aging her like Sigourney Weaver in "Avatar: The Way of Water". I feel the same way about Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey and Michelle Yeoh, I would've done Amanda Seyfried as Glinda, Aaron Tveit as Fiyero and Meryl Streep as Madame Morrible. I also would've included Kristen Chenoweth and Joel Grey in the cast. Everyone can disagree but be respectful to me please, I'm just stating my opinion.
Cynthia was in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple, right?
@@tonialston1968 She was and after seeing her performance at the Tonys, I though she would've been a much better choice for Celie in the movie musical instead of Fantasia.
i don't know her that much apart from mean girls and a cowboy movie whose name i've forgotten, but is amanda seyfried a singer ?
@@kyu_the_best Yeah. She sang in "Mamma Mia!" and "Les Miserables". She's really good.
She is not THAT good and would have had a really hard time wtih the vocal technique and pyrotechnics Wicked demands of its leads @@elephantbluepeter
I wish they would make The Ugly Stepsister into a movie. AWESOME book.
Adaptation level "cats" 😆
Now _that's_ harsh (to "Cats")!😄
I saw the original cast in the Broadway Production and loved it. This doesn't look good. And the casting is bad. Sorry, but not only do they not look like sisters but they dont look remotely close in age and Cynthia is not passing as a school girl. Additionally , Cynthia's run at the end sounds horrible. 🤷
I'm guessing the sister part is not really understood by a lot of people.. but people well trash others for pointing it out.
ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO BE SISTERS? Jesus christ. What a mess.
Thank God, somebody said that about the run at the end I’m sorry but just no freaking no that was just got awful.
You know a lot like to bring up Harry Potter with split movies. As far as I can remember this is the first finale that was split and it started a terrible trend of other movies. What people like to forget is Book 7 of Potter was 784 pages vs lets say Mockingjay was only 400. There was arguably no reason to have it split. Another around that time Divergent and Twilight both of which again did not need to be split. Harry Potter arguably this is the finale of a 10 yrs long journey that literally people like me grew up with it. I'm the same age as the actors. To give example it's like if Game of Thrones was a series of movies and not well a tv series and they decided to plit last movie because say too much to wrap up in one film but if they put it all together would be way too long.
I don't really think it was all that necessary when HP did it. Book 4 would have been better off being split into 2 films than book 7. Even with Potter it was a cash grab. Book 7 was just a horcrux scavenger hunt + battle of Hogwarts + epilogue. That didn't need two movies.
The thing is this movies been in the back log for so long so I’m glad it’s able get out the only sad thing is the original cast can’t be seen
I had no interest in Wicked, and don't know the story. But I might see this one in theaters. It looks interesting to see what happens in the story.
You’ll definitely change your mind when you see it that’s for sure.
I'll buy the engagement bait. Still, Looper is scared to say what they really think and poses the question to the people so they don't get in trouble for saying what they actually want to say.
I will admit this looks stunning.
That said, as a huge fan of the books and the musical…I am…cautious.
The casting looks pretty good, though I’m still not 100% on board with Grandes inclusion as Glinda, and I’m less than pleased they thought we needed a genderbent Pfanee since they weren’t that big a character at all, so why bother? Erivo as Elphaba seems alright. Goldblum as the Wizard is awesome though, love that. And Dorothy having silver slippers as she had in the original books and Maguires retelling rocks.
I worry about the 2nd movie though, they seem to be throwing a LOT into this one. I know they’re putting in things from the book to flesh it out, but this was busy lol.
As long as they don’t stray too far from the story, like don’t go into fanfiction territory, I think it’ll be alright.
Stunning? 🤔
@@GalaxyNexus1 Visually it's something that I think Oz would look like. From the original books to Maguires, the visuals just seem very Oz-ish: bright, colorful, weird and even a little crazy. My personal opinion of course.
to me the fact that Pfannee isn't a big character actually makes it more okay that he's gender swapped. i mean can you imagine if they gender swapped fiyero elphaba or galinda 😭
I think this teaser is for both. Since they did film both at once from what I've heard.
Do the wizard of Oz with idina and kristin reprise as the 2 witches

Can’t tell you who won or who ever played the superbowl but we all remember this trailer
Have seen Wicked 2x on stage. Chills both times, but a few things I noticed that I think factor in on this one:
1. Every Elphaba is a little different on the riff at the end of DG. This will be no exception.
2. I think this is going to adapt more like Les Mis did than any other movie adaptation. I think Part 1 will get more time to flesh out the friendship between Glinda and Elphaba, While Part 2 can expand on how Elphaba is behind the curtain more as the Wicked Witch, expanding on some of the twists of the act, maybe even giving Nessa more screen time in both to make Boq's fate even more surprising than it already is.
I think the commitment to 2 no matter what allowed them to make choices that can benefit the narrative as a whole, similar to the change in placement for I dreamed a dream in les mis, and am interested to see this take, whether I couldn't be happier after, or am in such total detestation.

I was excited until that last part where she is singing and my heart just sank. She's no Elphaba.
wondering where all the comments about the wicked witch being played by a black actress are... did the internet suddenly forget its racist roots? or did i get shuffled into a different+ universe again?
You can have the witch played by a black actress, but you need to make it work visually. A little makeup. A little CGI. Boom. It can all work. What you can't do is cast two very different looking woman and just say 'these are sisters' and this one has green skin. This isn't Dr.Who. We will buy anything in Dr.Who because the show's writing and style make you a believer. In a high-budget movie that wants you to take it all seriously, it doesn't work. This is what happens when you are so fixated on identity that you forego the actual craft of what you're making.
That run was my ONE complaint. Maybe in the context of the whole song, it will feel better? It just felt so messy
It’s sounds more sophisticated. Not annoyingly high pitched like the previous.
i think Cynthia Erivo is 37 a little old to be playing a girl
Why does everyone keeps saying that Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows was the first to split a movie into 2 parts when there was one way before in the 70s with Christopher Reeves. They where both filmed at the same time but because how long it was they decided to split it into 2 movies.
i think its because harry potter and the deathly hallows was the first "modern" movie to split it in two parts. after hp, a bunch of other franchises followed suit (i.e. twilight, hunger games, etc.) even though they didn't necessarily have to, so it was seen more of a money grab.
Also Dune. Dune Part II is coming out on March first this year.
Is that She-hulk or lady Shrek?
Both
I cant wait to see how the homewreckers be acting on this movie
I can't wait for the movie, "Wicked"!!!! This is going to be better than "CATS"
I absolutely love musical theatre, I LIVE for it, but they seriously gotta be careful when it comes to turning broadway production into film. Did they seriously forget what happened when they did this with Dear Evan Hansen? The movie was still good, but boy did it receive some serious backlash. I just pray the same thing doesn’t happen with wicked..
Let's face it - for decades the content of Hollywood came from Broadway! Busby Berkeley musicals, Mame, Music man, stories of Showgirls, The Jaz Singer (1st H'wood movie musical) - where do ya think Movies came from??? Books & PLAYS - duh! Broadway Musicals! AFTER the movies had Sound.. Until then Broadway and theater created musicals. This Wicked film will be continuing a Grand tradition. It has only been in the last 20 years that Disney made cartoons into Ice Shows & then Broadway shows, like The Lion King - and movies became Broadway shows like Mrs. Doubtfire and The Color Purple. As for Wicked? I was spoiled by funny goofy actresses as Galinda and can only hope Grande can cut it. I know nothing about Cynthia Eribe except that she has won Tony awards and has an amazing voice. I will give it the benefit of the doubt - so long as they did not make the "production" too lavish and too CGI to be enjoyed through my imagination like the stage show - all stage shows - do and did. Hollywood tends to ruin things (see Color Purple or CATS for example). Fingers Crossed!
Cynthia thought some of us forgot....NOPE! 😘 Real ones know what I'm talking about #iykyk Anyway wish I could've seen the Broadway version of Wicked heard it was phenomenal ❤💕🏆
I like how us actual real Wicked fans are collectively excited for this and agree that based on the trailer it looks great so far! We can safely disregard the doubters.
The strange minority of haters definitely picked a lonely hill to die on.
Ariana still cant act. Should have been dove cameron. Dont know why it wasnt!?
Yah!
Looks like a CGI equivalent of a half-assed attempt to colorize a b/w film. Just vomiting pastel colors all over the place and hoping they stick in the right spots.
To be fair to Cynthia…who under 30 has the acting and singing chops and film experience to take on Defying Gravity? I ask this as a Hollywood person so Broadway folks I’m totally open to being schooled here.
Judge the trailer, not the movie (YET).
I was fairly excited for the big screen debut, but my excitement is kinda soured by affairs & home wreckers *cough*cough*

How delusional are you? It’s almost literally impossible that this movie will flop considering the massive popularity of the stage show and the hype around this movie, lol. The Wicked fandom, we’re all collectively as a large majority looking forward to this movie.
It's very difficult to hit those Idina Menzel notes, plus Cynthia Erivo just doesn't seem to fit the part. Ariana has proven for over a decade that she is clearly Glenda worthy and can belt the notes CORRECTLY...I'm afraid the difference in the abilities and their on-screen images will be too obvious when watching the movie. I hope I'm wrong!
I feel like this movie is setup to fail only because everyone has been waiting to see the stage show brought to the screen. And this will essentially be a reboot of the stage show considering this will follow more of the novel’s narrative.
No. They literally confirmed they’re not omitting ANYTHING from the stage show, nor any of the songs, with maybe a little bit of extra stuff from the book added. It’s literally true to the stage show first and primarily. In fact they confirmed they need two movies to ensure they don’t have to remove anything that was in the stage show.
2 parts? Why?
Cause the story does have 2 quite distinct parts that do work as their own thing IMO. especially the Musical.
Also condensing the Wicked even more than the Musical has already condensed and glossed over would be desaster tbh.
Potential, I guess. But no movie can beat the stage performance of this amazing work of art. Cats ring any bells?
"No movie can be good because a movie was bad" Stunning logic
I’m kinda worried about Ariana’s vocals, the original actress for Glinda had such a cute quirky voice and it brought so much more to her character and songs. Is Ariana’s super polished vocals going to overtake the character and attitude of some of the songs?
Happy green history month!
The Earth says HELLO
Good morning start shine lol
Well while Harry Potter is the best and most successful example of two movies, there are Hunger Games, Rebel Moon, Twilight, a number of films that end up with a boring and purely set up first movie and an incomplete all action sequel. And lets not forget how much can go wrong that will separate and alter a sequel again Harry Potter changing ending and characters, different directors with different visions of the stories, not to mention delays and reshoots often brought on by the criticisms of the first film.

That singing at the end was so bad, it sounds like she’s straining her voice to the breaking point. Which is strange cause she is a great singer. There is a video combining all of Idina’s scuffed performances of the song after abusing her voice day in and day out of screaming Defying Gravity, and it’s on par with what was in the trailer
As the story goes, the Broadway version of the Music Man stared Bob Preston as Professor Harold Hill. Later when they were casting for the movie version, they approached Cary Grant to play the lead. Grant was reported as saying, "not only won't I play the lead in this film, if Bob Preston doesn't star in the role, I won't even go see it." The point being that by then in the minds of many Preston WAS Professor Harold Hill. This brings me to the question, were Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel not available to reprise their roles for this movie? With Cynthia as Elphaba I’m worried that somehow race will be brought even more into the mix. And yes I do know that everyone hates Elphaba because her skin is green.

Its gonna lose so much money and then we will never have to hear about it again.
OK, look Ariana Grande is a good singer but you need to be a classically trained color soprano for Glenda. Why do you think they chose Kristen Chen with to start out? Why do you think every Glenda after her is a classically trained color soprano because there are bits where you have to practically sing opera and I’m sorry Ariana can’t do that and don’t even get me started on her acting no thank you.
Yeah I ain't seeing it
Man. All the ignorance. So act two, if where it strays from the book the most. If they intend to stay closer to the book, this is also where the new songs would come in, and absolutely validate 2 movies. Doing an entire book in a movie has been proven a terrible idea over and over again

Wicked is a Musical based on a novel from 1995 that was based on the book that the Wizard of Oz movie was based on.
Now that Musical has been adapted for Screen after years(at least 10) of there being talks about a film. Driven by the Musical guys iirc
This thing is going to fail. look I’m sorry, but Ariana is not made for Glenda and Cynthia as far as singing wise is not made for alphabet in the sense that she’s trying way too hard. She needs to pull it back a lot or it’s gonna come off just like he does hear a God awful mess, and why didn’t they cast people who look the same age because if I recall correctly, Glenda and alphabet were around the same age in this in the play I’m sorry, but this is just a mess.
I don't think anyone's looking for this
I’m not looking forward to the bleached eyebrows. AG doesn’t give me any Kristin Chenowith vibes AT ALL (the role was originally written for her).Needless to say, I’m extremely disappointed in the casting of Glinda. 😢. I’m all for Cynthia Erivo playing Elphaba BUT I really wish singers would stop trying to make the Defying Gravity end riff their own crazy thing-it sounds good one or two ways only!!! I’m honestly afraid this is going to be a flop.
100% agree
why does she have to have a Kristin Chenoweth vibe when she can have her OWN glinda? even kristin is persistent that ariana will put a stamp on it and will not copy her which is a good thing.
