Ginger Baker goes to Yoruba Talking Drum "school" in Oshogbo, Nigeria. Twins Seven-Seven (Taiwo Olaniyi) performs as well as some masquerade (Egungun) dance.
MorbidManMusic All of the great Jazz drummers of the last century considered him an equal to them and all of his heroes became close friends to him. Talk about calling others ignorant
He's always seemed to have that african thing happening in his playing, Phil Seaman I think introduced Ginger to that feel and it informed his stuff, one of the early fussionists.
Great piece, and very educational. I had the pleasure of living close to Ginger for a while. He is a very Intelligent, interesting man. Much different than you may think.
@Wiley Wallaby It says at the beginning of the video it's in Nigeria. This is from a DVD called "Ginger Baker in Africa", if you like this video you'll like the DVD.
Very cool, Im gonna post it on my facebook and see if we can get more views. The kids are really awesome showmen there. The best thing also is that the older men are having as much fun as the kids.
The technique that Ginger Baker is using on this Yoruba drum reminds me of the Brazilian repinique, which is played with a short stick and the opposing hand.
Jkomen: Cool! Ginger now lives in South Africa. He is featured in the August 20, 2009 issue of "Rolling Stone" magazine. It is a very interesting article. Thanks!
@@anemaldemomusic8182 some lagos mob didn't want him to set up a studio there. they had ties w/ the gov so the gov told ginger to pack up his studio. he obviously told them to fuck off. next thing you know they're bashing down his door with armed goons. sent him running and never came back!
It's strange watching one of the greatest drummers not able to play a simple African side drum, he looks incredibly awkward and ridgid exactly how I'd look if I tried.
back to the roots baby.. percussions, rythms,heartbeat.. life..origins of the modern music yo, great vid, thanx to ginger, tanx for posting
African Roots of Jazz. If you can master this rhythm, you're well on your way to becoming a jazz musician extraordinaire!

Those Yoruba kids are proper showmen. playing up for the camera yah!
Ginger is certainly an African man in a white skin. much love Ginger:)
Is that because he was unreasonable, had a chip on his shoulder and prone to violence?
@@feolender2938 no
@@feolender2938 I think it’s cause he enjoyed Africa

the end part was spontaneous and outstanding, it can never be reproduced
Something about everybody beating on a drum, gets you there for sure
No drummer had more passion for the art of drumming than Ginger.

That was as cool as anything could possibly be.

High energy
All those kids at the end have better percussion skills than I’ll ever have. Lmao
But we have clean water
We have baseball, they have drums.
Getting down is universal. Love the little guys:)
Ginger baker unlike most other great drummer's never needed to show off.

Ginger talks like a stoner :)
He talks like a smackhead.
Tommy Two-shoes maybe cos he unfortunately was for 40 odd years
He also was a stoner, while he was in Africa he was smoking that NNG
@@Krakkokayne Yes, he received a lot of fat joints from Fela, also when McCartney arrived they smoked him out
Too bad the government chased him out of Nigeria. He really belonged there.
Did they?
Why?
