- Diocletian reigned as Roman emperor from 284 to 305 AD and is notable for his transformative efforts to stabilize the Roman Empire through sweeping administrative and military reforms. He introduced the Tetrarchy, dividing imperial power among four co-emperors to ensure more effective governance and defence across the vast empire. His reign marked significant changes in Roman government, economy, and military structure, laying the groundwork for the empire's continued existence amid internal and external pressures.

Bring back James O'Neill as Narrator
His was the voice that elevated these videos to the sublime. The AI narration is depressing
Agreed. The timing of pronunciation of the narration is just weird at times.
I clicked the moment I spotted the video, and than it all came back to me... the transition to AI narration exactly on the Aurelian video. It was the saddest day of the late antiquity, I loved the channel up to that point. You will have me back as soon as human narration is brought back, the quality hasnt dropped, just the appeal.
Glad to see this series back
Diocletian is a very underrated emperor (like Aurelian), with an image badly influenced by the christian tradition. I think he is one of the greatest Roman emperors ever.
Maybe you can do a longer video about all the Tetrarchs until Constantine the Great
I don't mind the AI art as much, six-fingered people and all, but is the narrator AI as well now? The cadence at some parts is really bizarre.
Why do people care? It costs time and money to pay and record a human voice. Some channels can't afford that. I swear people will complain about anything. If you don't like it, don't watch, straight up.
@@geordiejones5618 why do I care that the quality of content I watch declined? are you for real? Of course I will stop watching, that's the problem, for me who has lost content that used to be good, and for the channel that loses revenue. Like I said, I do not mind the AI when used correctly, but currently this is not good enough.
@@Veon1 stop watching, moaning, and go to a library and do your private research that satisfies your snobbish needs
@@adrian.farcaswhat is snobbish about simply not liking something? There was no implication that anybody who does enjoy content like this is somehow worse than OP, just a statement of preference. I don't think "snobbish" means what you think it means.
@@Veon1 No one cares. Move on
Glad you are back! It is here that the chronological timeline of emperors will get muddy, with many concurrent reigns in place around the empire, and between East and West.
I wonder just how the videos about the Emperors during the Tetrarchy Wars will be... it sounds very difficult.
"Appropriately for a scribe's son, he showed a liking for records and numbers, and wrote without literary pretensions. Salona was in Latin-speaking territory, but his Greek name of Diocles suggests Greek origins, and he was equally at ease speaking Latin or Greek. Although in 285 he Latinized his Greek name to Diocletianus, he was the nearest thing that the empire had yet had to an emperor of Greek stock."
Warren Treadgold, A history of byzantine state and society pp 14
I don’t love the AI art too much, but the AI voice is depressing.
@@AntonioBrandao I also prefer the previous voice from episode about Gallienus
Thank you so much man, Diocletian is one of my favorite emperors. Not sure it's the right niche but if anyone's very much into Diocletian and the Tetrarchy I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's content on the topic. As a matter of fact, I'd love to see a coop. Keep up with the amazing work
Welcome back!! I missed you 😊
Woooo, Great to see another video 🎉
I've been looking forward to Diocletian.
Glad you’re back at it!!
I miss the previous voice overs. FR.
The AI generated art and voices are so incredibly jarring that the information being presented is lost in the process. Glad to see I’m not the only one who’s noticed the severe drop in quality here.
Very interesting and rather comprehensive episode of a pretty significant emperor. In the area of religious oppression, seems Diocletian was also quite agressive in suppressing Manichaeism at times - another new religion from the east that met some missionary success in the Roman Empire.
A shame that the Tetrarchy formula didn't work. Its failure led to years of civil wars, to AD 324, when Constantine completely defeated Licinius.
knew this was going to be a huge video to upload, looks like the time has paid off
The only emperor that resigned before being murdered or killed.
some mighty fine cabages
I wonder why none of them resigned after being murdered
@@juanfervalencia😂😂
Quite a few died of old age or sickness, Also dunno if he counts as an emperor but Cincinnatus was dictator and resigned, twice i think.
@@carsonbrink47 You are right, some of them died of natural causes, though even Augustus death is suspected to be by poisoning. The difference with Diocletian is that he resigned and gave power to 4 people.
And Cincinnatus was a dictator, not an Emperor.
Great work! Love your footnotes. Also split your next videos.
Good content, but it sounds like the narrator is running a 5k while recording this
Always good to see the release of a new video!
Personal opinion on the next video: To do the rain of Constantine justice, the rest of the tetrarchi should be in different video(s).
thank you!
I have been waiting months for this video or Diocletian and it did not disappoint, now I can't wait until the next video on Constantine.
He’s back!
I would like to see each of the tetrach has his own video. Constantine must wait.
Welcome back!=yeah!-Do one on each
one for each tetrarch ! There are a lot of interesting interactions between them.
By the way, I truely love the style of the cartoons! Keep doing them and improving them, because the give a good style to the channel
Oh man, I enjoyed this video a lot. It was worth the wait. I didn't notice in the last video that the next one was going to be about Diocletian.
Maybe you already thought about it, but you should remake some of the old videos using current tools, i.e. the one on Augustus.
Greetings from Venezuela.
I just got intro'd to this channel 2 weeks ago. Finished all the others up to #39. And was ready to be disappointed with a long wait time. But no -- as fate would have it -- 40 is here. YAY!!!!
Lets gooo FInally!!
Please do the entire tetrarchy! I want to see it all from emperor to emperor and how it all happened its been great so far in chronological order!
You should cover each as they all deserve their own accounting.
Yes totally
Do you guess have a patreon?
Welcome back! We have reached Diocletian who is one of the best or worst emperors depending on who you ask. I quite like him.
Ave Divus Diocletianus!
Make the video on Constantine longer
It appears to me that the simplest approach is to include the story of the full tetrarchy as a single installment, much as you did here, with Diocletian serving as the 'focus' character. Each member had very distinctive roles to play in both the first tetrarchy and the ones to follow. Obviously, once the dust settled, Constantine returned us to a single emperor once again. The story of Constantine alone is worthy of a stand alone chapter...Perhaps a single chapter on the organization and figures leading up to Constantine the Great? As I mentioned earlier, the arrangement seems a little muddy, unless one selects a 'dominant' focus 'Augustus' for the next chapter, with the other figures in leadership playing a secondary role.
More videos, more better
I think there could be some videos for some of the individual tetrarchs, like Licinius and Maximian, who had long enough reigns to have held some significant events, but others like Severus II or Maximinus Daza were in the end rather short and forgettable, and could be easily looked over in favour of a video about Constantine.
A longer video on Constantine would be best.
35 minutes for such important figure is DEFINETLY not enough
@@kingspore5000 I see you on 50 % of the historical video I see 😂
@@razerti1459 hello
As soon as he gone tetrarchy failed
Ik Constantine will be made
But I feel like Galerius, Maxentius, Licinius and Maximian should be made into videos. Emperors like Severus II and Constantius I were emperors for such brief of a time that they are rather inconsequential (but influenced future events like Constantius I death led to Constantine and the fall of the tetarchy.
No mention of Diocletian’s cabbages I’m disappointed!
Ave Imperator! ✋🏻 I brought the cabbages as you asked! 😂
I'd say make a longer video with Constantine.
And so it begins
Thank you for the latest upload.
Greetings to all from Derbyshire , England .
To me, Diocletian comes across as both pragmatic and conservative which you can argue was the reason for both his successes and his failures.
OMG OMG OMG LETS GO
OMG!!!!!
To stop with the AI
👍👍👍
This channel is good, but this narrator, I don't know if its AI or real, but either way it needs to go. The pacing is all off in loads of areas and it just made the video unenjoyable.
Each emperor at a time, and please don't skip Maxentius, my preferate.
Also, I liked your videos more with human voice, and I hope they will be the same again in the future, because it is much better than ai. But I will watch them even if you continue to use ai art and voice in the future.
Don't have a problem with ai narration, but i do have a problem with the many additional notes one has to read throughout the video. don't mind if its just a few here and there but there were just too many back to back. although informative they are very disruptive and prevent the viewer from having a nice flow and make the viewing experience less pleasurable. If i am watching a video its because i don't feel like reading at that particular moment.
🫡 . One of my favorite emperors to learn about
I can't wait for Constantine The Great 🙏🏽
Each tetrarch
based
Wasn't Aurelian born in Pannonia or Dacia?
tetrachs yes
Yesssssssss the most interesting Roman emperor ever!
Imo
I think he destroyed the roman way of life and the economy. He put the Romans in a cast system and economically segregated each region.
Diocletian - the glory of Zeus
Jupiter was his patron God
@@Hugh_Morris his name in greek is Diokles and is formed by two words Dios(the dative of Zeus) and kleos(glory/fame)
Make a split
I know in your earlier videos people disliked your accent but id rather listen to you than AI.. I understand narrators are expensive, but if I sub to one AI channel, I'll get spam suggest kther AI using channels and I don't want that
AI AI AI. Goodbai.
Constantius....restorer of Light....mists of the past....just saying 12:33
he destroyed rome he established the failed tetrarchies and debased the currency and placed stupid price controls
You seem to be saving a fuckton of ducats with the heavy abuse of AI, so the plea for Patreon donations is ill-timed. I do believe there are copyright-free photos of 3rd century Imperial statues, which are famously life-like and precise, to say nothing of the million coins in which faces are depicted. I'd rather see them than the same old frowny-face handsome "art" done by computers. It's literally the same face, every time, seemingly based on the Chad Guy that the kids use in memes. As for the computerized voice: ew. It was kind of funny listening to HAL 9000 struggling with those complicated Roman names, I guess
Imagine using AI trash in your video
Imagine enjoying the effort of this channel without constantly nitpicking on stuff. If you think you can do a better job with the visual why don't you offer your skills for free to the authors of this channel?
It is easier to critique much harder to do something about it.
@@ProbusVerus Seems like the voice is AI too. Nothing is original.
@@ProbusVerus >nitpicking a thing that is present almost 100% of the video?
Yep, one more channel I'd clear of my sub list, it would seem. If the images and narration are AI, I wouldn't be surprised if the script was generated by chatGPT or somesuch. At this point I could just by myself ask any LLM to tell me about Diocletian with simillar results.
Bring back human narration now! This AI-generated voice is fake af and junk.
Never clicked a video faster
Ai channel. Blocked.
