220 Average Bowler has made about an arsenal's worth of illegal balls, though obviously he hasn't competed with them. You should definitely look into doing a collab with him.
It would be cool to see them do a match with illegal balls only
YES! Gotta get the illegal balls together… Or have them come up with an ultimate illegal ball with added weight that they make and test together…
Yes Mike Gonzales who bowls on tour is 220 Average Bowler has done these things and Packy should absolutely collab with him!
Funny enough some of them ended up worse.
@@tomrogue13facts
We had a guy in our league fill his balance hole with lead. It used to come up the ball return and sit there rocking back and forth😂
A guy back in mid 90's had a roll of quarters plugged in the side! Hahaha, the audacity was priceless! Same guy got kicked out for having the mechanic trip corners out with a coat hanger wire when he bowled. Dude had no shame!
nothing to see here. I didn't know it but one night the mechanic was throwing pins after my ball hit. I thought I could hit anywhere and strike. I was bowling the guy on the other team for high avg. I shot 266, 268 before he had to do other stuff. he told me later after he asked how I bowled he did it because that guy bitched at him about lane conditions over & over so he got tired of it. he couldn't bitch that night because I bowled 'good" against him. I mean I would hit Brooklyn , leave a 6 pin and out of the sky a pin would hit it. I would hear that guy say 'geezus' after some of my 'carrys'.
but,..... there was one guy who had 4-5 revs on his ball. a lefty. just when you think there's no way he's gonna hit the 2 pin, his ball woulf do the final 3 revs hooking 5 boards/rev. one old-timer said he was using a "doe-doe (do-do?) ball. lots of side weight .
I always did good with max side weight but haven't tried 3oz max yet. I think it creates a more spin-type action off your hand.
"I'm a two-handed lefty throwing an illegal ball and striking Brooklyn; could I be cheating any more?" had me fucking ROLLING 😂
Soften the ball in acetone or whatever.
😂
Do all of this with an og purple hammer
In a house tournament, there was a guy who's ball was going 5 feet longer and snapping 5 boards stronger than anyone else. In 7th or 8th frame of the second game, his finger grip went flying out and so didn't about 1/2 roll of nickels. This was back in the early 2000's when some finger inserts were capped on the bottom, so we would have never known if the grip didn't go flying.
Lol that’s so funny, I wish I could’ve been a fly on the wall when that happened.
Had a Brunswick power groove back in the day I got off eBay. Had a different pro shop drill it in Goshen Indiana. Took to a IYSBT Tournament 45 foot heavy volume sport shot nobody was hooking anything pretty much straight up 16 with a heavy oil ball and pray to carry. After 4 games beating my head against the wall I thought I’ll take my new power groove and throw at the pocket off the corner, Instead I ended up playing 5th arrow out to two board and shooting 256 game 6. Fast forward I get it on a scale I’m told the pin was miss marked from Brunswick and the pro shop must not have checked it after drilling as it had 6.5 onces of side weight
Well that's not your fault.
You know if you take the inserts out of a yellow dot, put some metal tubes in the holes, put it on a cookie sheet, and place it in the oven. When you can put a nail into the shell and pull it out and the hole closes up it is done. As long as the durometer punched 72 you were golden. Talk about opening up the foot-print of the ball. Also back in my time, people would drill the finger holes deeper and put coins under the inserts. One time this guy rolled the ball the inserts came out and coins went all over the lane.
Next time I go bowling ima rock the half tucked in shirt style
I've made a couple of illegal balls for fun. I have a ball with the thumb drilled completely through the ball. Another one I drilled a 1 inch or so deep hole in my PAP and in the center of my grip, put in remote controlled LEDs, and covered with clear plug. Ball looks awesome going down the lane.
I know of a couple... Had a guy (drilled his own stuff) drill a ball completely upside down. Also had someone (when the no weight hole rule came out) drill their weight hole to 1 3/8" and full depth. Then used a band saw to cut the thumb slugs and used an 1/8 of the slug to fill the hole (putting it 1/4" from the top) once the glue "dried" he would put plug over top of it. Only found this out when we redrilled a ball into the weight hole and hit urethane then the bit just... Fell.
The "fun one" would be to do this to an older ball from the 70s or 80s. What do I mean? Something like an old yellow dot (same thing with the bolts) then soak it in MEK and see if it can compete with a modern ball
Yea that’s no good!
@@TheHouseBowlingit will be interesting if you did that tho I love to see you do that kind of stuff with vintage bowling balls
I had a great idea for a video for you. You and the pro ir pros of your choice should do a highest score across the entire alley challenge. If you strike or spare, you keep bowling on that lane until you have a score recorded in the current frame. Once all the lanes have been bowled, add up all the scores.
A buddy told me that back in the 80’s when the lanes were fried on C squad a guy put 3 and 1 oil on a rag to keep his ball on line. So when he wiped off his black angle it actually looked shiny going down the lane instead of it being dull like they were out of the box 🤣
We tryed it in the early 80s on rubber balls. You could se for a mile that it was tampered with. But we hade great fun.
Packy thanks for doing these "extra" videos it's great content that us bowling lovers like!!
hi packy, can you make a video on what really happened with urethane ball banned in pba tournament
you need to put side-wt on a no or low-flare ball and roll up the back to see how high side weight affects motion.
how did you drill the spare ball? righthand layout?
I used my Spectre for most of my summer Sport Shot league last year. Granted it was not a USBC sanctioned league so it was perfectly legal for me to throw it. 😅😅😅
Bowling in a college bowling club, there was a guy that threw an 18 pound ball and a 20 pound ball on some league nights, that was way over the legal limit allowed. He had them custom-made because he felt a 16 pound ball was too late for him to throw down then. Was very inaccurate overall and only averaged about mid 160s. Keep in mind though this week was unsanctioned too.
I saw you getting all those Brooklyns in Reno last week. 😁😁 Nice bowling in singles Packy!
There were only a few 👀
@@TheHouseBowling There were a couple. But you still crushed it. Haven't checked BJI scores, but hope you bowled well on that too.
I never used it in league or any other sort of sanctioned event but the best working ball I ever had was a 16 pound 6oz reject I pulled out of the defect bin. It was a beast
one man's trash is another man's treasure as they say
What ball and brand?
220 wants his idea back 😂. No fr love you guys
Try that again, this time find the axis migration. I believe that will help people understand why it helped or hurt performance. Also, if you have access to a determinator, spin it, id love to see what the spin time is.
Former proshop employee was an AMF staffer sold some of his equipment and a guy brought it into the shop for another employee/owner to redrill and the same thing happenned when drilling out the fingers or thumb it hit metal and there was multiple screws and bolts in the ball that damaged the bit. The proshop owner made the now former employee pay to replace the bit.
I need a new episode of the bang bang challenge!😂
Used to do that when I was a kid, drilled our own weight holes
One of my regulars when i still worked at my center once came in after drilling out his pin and replacing it with a (DISARMED) 50 bmg sniper bullet
Not ball related but when i worked in the back of an alley we had a pin that someone filled the bottom with some kind of metal. It was way heavier than it should have been.
only stories I got is about two guys one just throwing some fishing weights into his balance hole and plugging it, while the other one decided to 3D print a plug and put it into his weight hole as soon the rules changed 😂
It was nice seeing you in Reno !
The 2-4-5 is definitely harder. It's something mental for sure haha
When I first started bowling league there was a team that told me they were using ‘ counterweights ‘ I didn’t even know that was illegal at the time because I was new to bowling and thought they had super high revs like professionals 😂
I built an 18 ball. Added 8 Oz. Sinkers that were melted and poured into four plugged hole. One on top of the ball, bottom, and one on each side. Ball was balanced but extra heavy. No deflection even roll using a Columbia 300 white dot. Old old school. 1970’s
Also used a soaker back then.
MEK made any plastic hook like crazy.
Back in The early 80's a friend own a Pro-shop in a center. For the hell of it he (a lefty like myself) added 7oz of lead to a plastic ball with a Pancake weight block. . We both threw it. It hook really early but by 2/3 down the lane the weight took over and it went dead straight into the 2-4 pins. Wasn't worth a damn. 🤣
Back in the day (80's and 90's) at the High Roller in Vegas there were always bowlers that would crush the sweepers using a piece of equipment that would magically not show up to be used in the actual High Roller event (where they checked the equipment). So while I don't know exactly how they were illegal likely they were.
I feel like in this era it used to happen much more than it happens now adays!
Cool video talk tech bowling bowling ball packy
I've seen lead buckshot in the bottom of the finger holes.
My uncle used to bowl in my family tournaments we hold every year and hey was throwing a black widow and after it came up the ball return it would roll back and forth so we cut it in half and found out that he had drilled a hole and put tungsten in it than plugged the hole
I used to think that the spot above the fingers where they checked the hardness (mill hole) was filled with lead to make "finger weight"
Hahaha
Hey Packy you should head back to east gate lanes in Newton Kansas they have made a lot of changes from the last time you bowled there
Go Brooklyn! Luv it
Had a guy using using what was believed to be Vaseline on his rag and wiped it on his ball. The lanes we bowled on were wooden and were really dry as the lane machine wasn't working properly. Everyone's ball was hooking at 10-15 feet and his ball looked pretty normal down lane hooking at 30-35 feet.
I once tried it with a Pesto Log it didn't hook very well, but Man that thing burned for hours!!
Here goes packy with a banger video
I think the only way to know whether the bolt&nuts impacting the ball's performance is by rolling straight with a straight ball. If the ball does turn right/left (depending on the bolt&nuts located), then we could know how strong the cheating is. Btw, good stuff as always Packy!
How about on the other side of the ball can you drill a counter hole but but fill the space with some kind of spacer to take weight out of the other side of the ball? Heavier on one side but lighter on the other.
So my best friend had his 2 last years of league in schhool and his second to last year he filled a old ball with like almost a pound of lead and bowled it all of league and no one knew besides me, and i love him for it.
Back in the 90's had a bowler that was in league play that had 2 weight holes. Captain of my team asked him about it and he said he was on the PBA tour and it was perfectly fine. 🤣 needless to say he wasn't that good and we all thought well it didn't really give him an advantage so no one was to worried about it. But it was hilarious.
Video idea. Bowling competition with drunk goggles
Lol I have heard stories from older guys talked about guys in the 70s putting bebe bullets in their ball. One night the plug came off during league lol
Are u ever in Florida. Tampa area?
I did this as a joke ball 20plus years ago. I took a 1 3/8 bit as deep as I could but didn't stop there. I pitched the hole all the way forward still using the same entry hole. Repeat left pitch, right pitch and reverse pitch. I then filled it with lead fishing weights. I did this on the right side (negative side for a right hander) of the ball and would bet people they couldn't hook the ball. The ball had over a pound of negative weight. This ball would literally back up. (Funny note a left-handed customer loved it as he could hook the lane). Did this to an old Ebonite Turbo C.
A guy who use to work at my local center proshop 15 plus yrs ago use to put quarters in the ball from where he would drill it out and plug it🤔 he got cause he shot 300 somewhere and then threw the ball in the dumpster out back he got banned for a few yrs
I sanded my hammer hawg (Year 1999 ish)to 60 grit and played at the orleans on the heaviest oil imaginable and I could not keep the ball on the lane.
i saw someone using a phaze iv in a pba jr regional
Isnt that an illegal one?
What do the bolts weight like 4 more ounces than what was drilled out?
4.5 i believe once it was all filled back in and thrown!
do they do any sort of weighing or having your balls checked by a Pro when you bowl in big tourneys?
They do but since they changed the rules its not too common to see people weigh bowling balls anymore!
What can a bowler expect happen if an older ball with a weight hole (now illegal) was plugged with the bolts included?
Being on or near pap it’s be lazy
And I also know of guys that who used to soak their bowling balls. Put them underneath a faucet then use rosin bags and pound them on their tracks because there was that much oil. Lol
Took the RG on that Melee Jab from a 2.487 to a 4.25
hahahah i tried to at least!
1 3/8 hole full depth in the Negative axis point
Hey Packy! The right handers say the left side is walled. Well after that video I'd say the right side is walled. Lol
thats what im saying hahahaha
Back in the day, this other bowler has 2 weight holes on his ball for some reason . He had his holes about 15 minute apart or quarter apart
I know people who use dimes and nickels, in the fingers and thumb..also when the lanes did have enough oil on them, the baby oil and rubbing alcohol.soaked in a towel trick, to get the ball down the lane more...lol
Oof!
Back when Columbia 300 had the ceramicores, I was drilling a Tremor for a customer and the nugget was placed wrong, and my drill press looked like it was having a seizure.
Also, unless it's a pancake type core, side weight doesn't matter. Where's @brunsnick at?? #cgnomattah
I was bowling a tournament once and noticed a Spectre going down the lane. (This was this season) I honestly didn’t care but I had some people around me making a big deal of it to the point where I didn’t want to hear it any more so I went to our association president and he went and talked to the owner and the tournament manager. This started a MASSIVE fight between the bowler and his team with the owner. By the end of the night the Spectre was taken and I found it the next day in the pro shop with about 15-20 extra holes in it 😂
Just read Mo Pinel’s paper on this.
Side weight has very little effect on ball motion. Cover stock is 90% ball motion followed by core specs
Side weight and core dynamics dictate how much fresh cover sees the lane. Packy added flare separation so the ball read in the oil earlier, putting a bigger footprint of the cover on the lane surface.
Had it gone the other way, and there was no flare at all, the ball would skid past the end of the pattern, making almost no move at all. While MO is technically correct, the cover has to win the battle between the lane surface and the core to make any motion at all.
By placing the bolts on his pap, it is preventing the core from flipping and rolling out, essentially aiding the cover to maintain its control of the situation, so it continues to pull to the right, around the direction of the side weight.
They tested up to 6oz side weight on throwbot.. it had almost zero effect on ball motion.. weight holes have way way more effect as it changes core dynamics..
You mentioned a bucket leave….funny story about that leave. In league I used my wife’s 9 pound T Zone and picked it up…two handed.
oh man!! quite the pickup!
Have a 1 handed with less revs do the same comparison I think it will be easier to tell
yea it might be easier for sure!
6:38 use a purple hammer lol
HAD A GUY SOAK A BLEEDER IN ACETONE - IT WAS LIKE THROWING A SPONGE BALL - MADE PINS FLY OFF THE DECKS.😇
Please do the exact same thing to a purple hammer!!
Since weight holes were banned and balls are being designed to compensate for them now...what would happen if u put weight holes in them now?
seen you live on another stream. You should Live stream more!
Might have to go livestream more often!
@@TheHouseBowling 🤩
Had a guy palm his ball on the opposite side of all the drilling. He set up with the finger and thumb holes pointed to the ceiling and hand underneath
hmmm id have to see a video of this guy!
I'd like to see how much difference it looks when you throw a right handed layout, lefthanded. Drill up 2 balls, one right hand one left hand.
New Video Idea 👀👀
you shouldve taken the bolt out of his ball and just watch as his scores plummet and he has no idea why 😂
Weight hole on opposite side of bolts
It's not rolling out that's for sure. Given enough space I bet it would boomerang right back to you. Got a basketball court in the Rec?
We had a guy fill his weight hole with a roll of quarters, but the plug broke and the roll of quarters exploded on the lanes.
Had a guy that would use a Scotch-Brite as a towel!
I saw someone with a scotch bright pad sown into his bowling towel
Oh my...could it be any more obvious than that!
My father used Mercury back in the 70's and 80's
The one and the only 220 average bowler does this all the time
That dead straight spare shot is crispy
been working on it a long time!
220avg has definitely had an arsenal of illegal balls
Instead of the walleye cheaters we got weights in fish now we got filled weights in bowling balls😂
Next time go 1pound under weight and fill a hole with 1lb of lead fish weights try it on a pearl like the ocean vibe or gb2 phenom lol or heat pearl
It's rolling like it's 2000 grit.
Your could get that Reaction if you NEVER cleaned Tha ball and left the belt marks on it but wiping the oil off
I know someone that put a entire sleeve of dimes in their thumb hole until the ball busted out and dimes went everywhere
oh boy....
We had a guy in a sport shot league that hid an abralon pad in his rag and was keeping his surface fresh every time he wiped his ball down. I caught him at the end of game 2, but this was about five weeks into the league no telling how long he had been doing it.
Make a super illegal purple hammer. Drill a thumb hole super big super deep. Do the side weight thing, but put a roll of quarters in it.
We had a guy who used an illegal 18lb bowl from Mexico until somebody picked it up and noticed it was heavier than his 16lb ball
I actually have a few. There was a guy in my winter league when i first started adult leagues who not over exaggerating had a square hole like 2.5x2.5 inches for his thumb and would seriously chisel it out at league. The other is our old lane man Fred R.I.P told us a story about a guy in league who's ball got stuck in the return and he pulled it out put it on the return and a half roll of taped quarters came out of the weight hole.
That was cool! PS All the Purple Hammer Haters are just jealous right handers!!! Hahahahahahahaha!
So I have actually put a roll of dimes into a blue dot. I rolled in an unsanctioned league one night in a little hole in the wall place (lots of money flying around) and I let those guys keep their money 😂. I told them about the experiment but that thing would continue through the pocket so well, they thought I was Maximum Bob!
Pour some molten lead in that weigh hole. Way heavier than some bolts.
If you want this reaction.
Buy a ZEN lol this does this out the box.
The Zen soul hooks more than that lmao ha ha ha 😂😂😂🤣😂😆😂🥇🥇🥇🥇💎🌍
I would hope so seeing as this is a longer and snappier bowling ball meant to hook less than the zen soul hahahahah
One of my HS teammate's dad did a tournament at an alley about 15 years ago and this alley didn't have automatic score counters. You had to do it by hand. These two old ladies were keeping score for the tournament and were talking the whole time and not paying 100% attention. So they would periodically just ask him "you threw a strike this frame right?" He would say "of course, even though he hadn't thrown lol
Thats the worst!!
@@TheHouseBowling he did well that tournament!
The answer to your question of how you can cheat more…. Do this to a purple hammer and let the ball soak in acetone 😂
Wasn't necessarily cheating, but about got himself kicked out of a tournament, but a kid I was crossing with at a youth tournament was struggling, so he decided to cover his ball in EZ slide and throw it down the lane. Left powder marks where he'd put it thickest about 30 feet down the lane.
should have marked your PAP before you altered the ball and afterwards so you could see the difference. given the balls flaring the weight at your pap is probably migrating to full rolling so the weight is end over end making it the most stable it can be. but you didn't mark up the ball
as for extra cheating, you could have cleaned the ball midgame and then altered the surface
