*The Returning Gabata Board (もどってきたガバタばん MODOTTEKITA GABATABAN)*
This story takes place in the town of Neburi. A father made a Gabata board, an Ethiopian chessboard, out of olive wood for his son. The boy loved the board and took it with him every day while herding cows to the valley.
One day, he met some men with camels who needed wood to start a fire. The boy offered his Gabata board, which the men used to start the fire, and they gave him a fine knife in return. Later, a man digging a well borrowed the knife and broke it, giving the boy a spear instead.
The boy continued his journey and met hunters who needed the spear to kill a lion. The spear broke, and the hunters gave him a horse. The horse ran away due to a landslide, and road workers gave the boy an axe to compensate.
A woodcutter borrowed the axe, broke it, and gave the boy a large branch. Near the village, a woman took the branch for firewood and, in return, gave the boy a Gabata board.
The boy returned home with the board, and his father laughed, saying the Gabata board kept his son entertained all day long.
