    I remember by this point everybody knew the 80's rock era was finished. There were no new bands coming up the ladder, and it was just the existing bands that were still being played on tv/radio although they sounded worn like they'd seen brighter days... as a 14 yr old guitarist at that time who wanted to be a rockstar, I remember seeing it all die from the mainstream and thinking it was just a temporary thing, and that it would be back.. when we made those dreams, nobody told us those days wouldn't exist by the time we came of age to live them.. it's crazy how things change, there's no youth music movement anymore.. teenage rebellion has become a product to be sold and is created by marketing think-tanks..

      Your comment was spot on. I liked the grunge and alt-metal stuff too (Chains, Soundgarden, Tool in particular), but even that all melted away. I never, ever thought the rock' n roll party would end, but it did and it breaks my heart. The youth didn't want to carry the torch of metal or punk or basic rock n roll , they just retreated into their computers and gadgets.

      Nail on the head. I'm a 25 year-old guitarist now and my music taste is all 70s/80s rock like Led Zep, the Stones, GnR, Credence Clearwater, etc. And the state of modern music makes me so incredibly depressed because I, like you, know I'll never get to experience what the generation before me did.

      I just turned 16 two days ago and I love 80s rock. In my opinion, today’s music is crap and they need to bring the 80s back. Even though I wasn’t around then I really miss the 80s. I’m sad I didn’t get to experience it during that time as I was born in the wrong generation. But I will always appreciate these amazing people that are the reason Rock n Roll still lives on!! 🎸 ⚡️

    I missed this year of donington. By this point it had ceased to be a rock festival and was just a real heavy metal show, with bands like pantera being plugged more and more.
    Before it was always a good mix. If I remember right, skid row were the only band this year that were rock n roll, and even they were getting pretty heavy by then.
    I saw them on the slave tour, saw donington in 91, which was awesome, with a good mix for everyone, from black crowes to metallica to acdc. Went back in 94, and the only two bands on the show that were really heavy were extreme (no idea how they got on the bill, being more of a pop band) and of course aerosmith, who were flying high on their get a grip popularity. And of course they deserved and earned their headlining status, and were truly awesome and worthy of it every minute.
    This was the beginning of the end for donington monsters of rock I thought. Shame, it had been a staple of great bands and awesome line-ups and just great flat out fun for well over a decade at this point.

    The classic case in which comes the revolution, sweeping away everything that was there before and at the end you realize that things were better before the revolution.
    The Hair Metal may not like, but one thing is certain, even the poorer groups of that trend had a technical enviable.
    With Grunge arrived bands with zero technical knowledge and ridiculous ideas, Cobain maybe didn't know but killed the rock.
    Before Nirvana rock was the epicenter of all, dominated the charts, trends, after them is in the rear, a failed attempt at restoration has tried the Nu-Metal before the final triumph of the disposable pop.
    Give us back the hard rock bands, the big hair, the solos and songs as 18 and Life and Youth gone wild.

      so true. before cobain and alot of other grunge mob heavy rock was king. then cobain n co came along dressed like lumberjacks and even the biggest hair metal bands like def leppard suffered and it took heavy rock years to recover. nu metal got it going a little but thankgod hairmetal/classic rock stuff seems to be cool again now so mr cobain aint won in the end

    • @mistermackey638
      @mistermackey638 Před 7 lety +2

      You're wrong. Rock ruled the singles charts pre-1990. It was already beginning to slide out of the singles charts well before grunge as hip hop was becoming the new hot mega-genre. Look at how many rock #1's there were from the period of '87-89 and look at that again in '90-92. Big drop. Only a few glam bands had hits during the early 90's vs new wave, glam, and corporate rock ruling the late 80's. They were all being displaced by rap music. Even You Could Be Mine by Guns N Roses never cracked the Top 20, and this was pre-Nirvana. Had that song come out in '89 instead of '91 I'd bet you anything that it would have been a Top 5 hit. Same with Enter Sandman by Metallica.
      But you're wrong in another sense as well. Even though hip hop was bigger on the song charts than grunge, grunge was selling an absolute fuck-ton of albums. On average they sold about as much as glam did in the US and way more worldwide. Nirvana and Pearl Jam equaled record sales by Bon Jovi and Def Leppard in the US and outsold them by wide margins globally. Soundgarden's and Alice in Chains' sales rivaled Motley Crue and Poison, and STP stood somewhere in the middle. And in the early 90's glam bands were having a hard time going beyond even 2x platinum. The then-new bands like Slaughter and Firehouse barely made it to their first million. Poison and Skid Row saw a huge drop in sales with their first 90's records vs their late 80's records, again pre-Nirvana. Meanwhile Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were selling 8 million albums.
      Grunge actually reinvigorated rock music, evidently. Glam was on its way out. Unfortunately pop radio had begun to focus on rap music, probably because it was easier to dance to than rock music at the time (including glam). This pre-dated grunge and almost certainly would have continued whether alt rock became the new dominant rock music or not. But grunge, along with Metallica, put rock back at the top of the albums charts and back to dominating MTV.

    • @axlh.1827
      @axlh.1827 Před rokem

      Glam killed itself before grunge became mainstream. Too many copy cats after 1989 everything in glam had been done and you get a bunch of C-grade hair bands that were just poison and warrant clones and super generic poppy garbage. Nothing was original by that point and everyone grew up and moved on to other music, it happens with every over indulgent genre, disco, hair metal, mumble rap, etc.
