Fair Isle without floats (Locked Floats): sustainable and more possibilities

- In this video I show how you can knit color patterns, like Fair Isle, but without the loops or floats at the back of the work. This has a couple of advantages, like more pattern possibilities, and I explain this all in this video. I show you the technique how to weave in the yarn that you don't use for making a stitch while knitting with the other color. The technique is also known as 'Locked Floats'.
The patterns that I show are not yet available at the moment of releasing this video (6 april 2022), but they will be in a couple of weeks.

I’m so pleased I found this video! I had done fair isle knitting in the past and I don’t remember doing floats.
The sock pattern I was knitting recommended ladder floats, but I was having so much trouble with them and had to restart the second color several times and some of the floats came undone. I was thinking something needed to change in order to complete the pattern. I knew I could do it, but those ladder floats were ridiculously difficult for me, so I will try this method. This is probably the method I used to make 2 fair isle hats several years ago.

This is fantastic! A great way to not have to knit a fair isle sweater in the round and you’ve cleaned up the float really well! I’ve been twisting my yarns every few stitches and it’s so slow!
This seems like it would be nice for socks. The sock would remain "stretchy" as that is harder to create with floats - aside from knitting them inside-out. Also, the socks would be warmer as they are thicker. Wonderful! Thank you for sharing this technique!
I knitted a sock that would NOT stretch and getting it onto the foot was very unpleasant. That’s why I’m here!

Wat een geweldige video. 🤩🤩 Ik brei al zo'n 50 jaar en ik leer nog steeds iets nieuws. Zoals in dit geval het permanent inweven van het garen. Tot nu toe heb ik de garens alleen gekruist als ze zich over meer dan 4 steken uitstrekten. "Ladderback" vind ik ook niet zo geweldig. Ik ga jouw methode proberen en ik weet nu al dat ik het bijzonder moeilijk ga vinden om geen spanning op de draden te zetten... Ik ben erg benieuwd naar mijn resultaat. Heel erg bedankt!

So helpful! Thank you. I am working on a jacket with some pretty long stretches of color and have been struggling with the floats. Ripped back about 12 rows and started with this method and it is so much better. Also "forces" me to practice my continental purl stitch, which is an added plus.

Też w ten sposób robię wzory żakardowe. Tylko trochę inaczej trzymam włóczkę w prawej ręce, ponieważ lewą mam jednak sprawniejszą. Na lewej stronie robótki jest o wiele łatwiej przeplatać włóczkę i robię to trzymając obie nitki w lewej ręce. Pozdrawiam z Polski :)/= This is how I make jacquard patterns as well. I just hold the yarn a little differently in my right hand, because my left one is more efficient. It is much easier to intertwine the yarn on the wrong side and I do this by holding both strands in my left hand. Greetings from Poland

Thank you for your careful demonstration. I love making stranded color knitting. I have had the habit of locking the carried thread more frequently than required in standard practice because I made fair isle patterns for baby blankets where floats could be caught on little fingers and toes.
I'm intrigued by your method of purling when knitting flat. It appears much less cumbersome...I will try it.

Very, very helpful! Your pace is just right for showing the technique and your calm voice makes it seem easy. I also liked your tip on not having tension on the yarn. I have admired Fair Isle knitting but have stayed away from it because of all those floats! I now feel more able to tackle this knitting style. Id be interested to see what you do with the yarn when you have to doa few rows in one colour before moving back to two colours?
This method definitely has advantages in some projects as you said, but for a pullover or vest I wouldn’t use it. I prefer a fabric with more fluidity that floats provide.
In that case, do you knit and purl, or do you prefer to steek?
Once Fair Isle is no longer worked in-the-round, with steeks, it is no longer considered fair isle style of stranded colorwork, and the name is different.
Locking all the floats in stranded colorwork knitting is also known as Armenian knitting/darning.
So, this is a lovely tutorial on stranded colorwork with locked floats, known as Armenian knitting. ❤️ I find it important to make these distinctions so we do not forget the peoples who gave us these techniques.
How to do this with purl stitch or switching from knit to purl?

There is no need to purl if you knit backwards. I always do this.

So when you're working in specifically Fair Isle style, you only ever work with two colors per row. You're gonna want to look up color work techniques for specifically 3 or 4 colors at a time. Depending on the actual design you're going for, you might want to look at intasaria techniques (solid blocks of color like puzzle pieces) or else maybe colorworking techniques that end up using more floating on purpose to manage the bulk of so many colors in one row., just as a starting point.
