  • Leeds is now very much a one railway station city, but this wasn't always the case. This video tells the story of six Leeds railway stations in or close to the city centre. It includes Marsh Lane Station, Hunslet Lane Station, Wellington Station, Central Station, Leeds New Station, Holbeck Station and Leeds City Station.

Great video. Looking at the past at what Leeds could have developed by keeping and upgrading the then existing rail and tram infrastructure leaves one with a sense of sadness that politicians and municipal leaders were so wrong in their decision and enthusiasm to make Leeds a motorway city.

Sadly the city council never had any control over the city centre stations. First they were owned by private companies and then by central government as British Rail, even now they are controlled by Network Rail. All the city can do is ask for improvements or changes but it is Network Rail and central government that controls the station.

Thanks Safir. I can understand their enthusiasm to make Leeds a motorway city - quite a few cities did the same. I share your sense of sadness about trams. A mass transit system should have been a priority for many years and it will hold the city back until one is introduced I fear. Thanks for commenting.

I would like to see Marsh Lane reopen as a terminus station serving the East of Leeds and all points to the East. They could have a through platform on the current line. But having a terminus station there would reduce the congestion particularly on commuter traffic.
I would also like to see some kind of co-ordination link between Leeds City, the bus station and if opened the new Marsh Lane station. Maybe something like gondolas to minimise disruption to existing road traffic.

Opening Marsh Lane in some form would seem a good move. We definitely need some better links between Leeds City and the bus station - it's a fair old walk between the two! Thanks for commenting Stephen.

Marsh Lane would be a great shoulder station for the city, many other cities have them as they reduce traffic going all the way into the city just to get a bus or taxi part of the way out again. It better for all involved. The station being fulling through platforms would probably be the best option.
That connect is best served by active transport link (separated bike lanes and the like) or a tram (or both if it can be afforded) as Leeds needs better Mass Transit so linking a new station to the bus station and maybe on to and past the main station would be great, a east-west tram link.

Very interesting thanks. I'm from Harrogate, and there was confusion in the old days when some trains went to Central, and some to City! I always refer to Leeds City station as such, even though it has been called "Leeds" for years, but I see from your video that it has been re-branded back to the old name, Leeds City.

Pleased to hear you use the English word "GOODS" and not the American English "Freight" as most do today.
