Kane Kosugi was perfect in this role. Half Japanese, half Chinese, and all American. The fact that his character gradually reconnects with his Japanese heritage over the course of the series makes him perhaps the most interesting of the bunch (aside from Ninja Black obviously being the best fighter, too). Many Asian Americans can relate to the frustration of not being able to speak the language you look like you're supposed to know fluently, especially when you're in the land of your ancestors, and it was great seeing him gradually overcome this.
