Engine oil will pool in the lower cylinders of a radial engine. That's why you crank the prop manually or with the starter several turns before ignition. It clears the lower cylinders of the oil. Failure to do this before start up risks blowing off a cylinder due to excessive pressure. Even so, during start up there is still a lot of oil in the lower cylinders. That's why there is all the blue smoke at start up until it clears out.
