- SL Shop Mercedes Benz R107 SL300 Restomod Driven!
Alex Brundle gets behind the wheel of The SL Shop's beautiful Mercedes Benz SL Restomod. This beautiful piece of design has been paired back by the SL Shop and given a new lease of life. Alex wanted to find out if this really is the drivers car that it is being promoted as. We get out on beautiful Warwickshire roads to find out.

A pleasure as always to work with Alex!
I had a 1983 SL280 in red, with the same interior and alloys. It was a special car and it often attracted a crowd, which I wasn’t overly keen on. I think when ai was selling it, guys from the SL Shop may have come to view it before I sold it to someone else.
Such a beauty, I would happily have watched a video that's 2 minutes longer to have more pure driving clips, hear it stretch it's legs a bit.
I had an R107 500 in that same Signal Red and tan interior. (I ha a 280SL Pagoda before that….beautiful to look at; a horrible tractor of a thing to drive! 😅).
I have to say that although I loved the look of the R107 and though it was significantly better than the Pagoda, it remained a disappointing car to drive. This was especially so from the perspective of the handling which I found pretty poor, even accepting that it was designed as a long distance grand tourer rather than as a sports car.
It’s good to see that this SL Shop restomod has it seems addressed these suspension issues.
The degree of scuttle shake too was particularly unpleasant, especially on our less than smooth British roads!
Additionally, at6’ 2” with the hardtop in-situ, the proximity of the roof and especially the sun-visor to one’s forehead was also a surprise and an unpleasant disappointment.
I then had a couple of R129s which IMHO was a vastly improved car in nearly every respect. The improved build quality in particular was noticeable. However, even in these, though greatly reduced, there was still a quite noticeable degree of scuttle shake especially without the hardtop in place. It’s a bit of a pet hate of mine because I feel that the sudden shake through the car reduces the confidence one has in it at speed.
I now have an R230 and dynamically this is another huge leap forward. Even I (!) can’t feel scuttle shake through this car! The cabin space, comfort and feel to is much better for long distance trips - I have taken mine up to Scandinavia more than once, down to Spain and numerous trips to southern France.
Perhaps my only regret this time is that I ‘chickened out’ on the potential running-costs and opted to just go for the SL350 with its normal, spring suspension and lesser power. I wasn’t bothered at the time that I bought it because I had much faster sports cars in the garage. But, now that I have sold them, I’m becoming more aware that probably the 500 would have been or is a much better car….???
Such that I’m now often tossing around the idea in my head, whilst also trying to justify the added expense of trading it in for an R230 SL55! 😂😂
At the moment, my ‘sensible’ head is still prevailing! Somebody help to convince one way or the other! 🤣

I’ve had a 1983 SL 280 in red, so I know these cars. I don’t understand the manual gearbox.
