The fear and traumatized look in Ellies eyes when she sobs and exclaims when Henry shoots himself is so freaking heartbreaking 😭😭😭

Something that gets overlooked in this episode is that the doctor knew exactly where Henry and Sam were and didn't tell Kathleen last episode.

Even though Sam's death was the biggest reason why Henry offed himself, I feel like the second was everything he did for Sam, all the people that died because of his actions. The Resistance Leader, the doctor, all the people that died from the swarm. He justified his actions because he wanted to keep his brother alive. Suddenly, all the "evil" things he did, as he described, was for nothing. Heartbreaking
Keep in mind, narratively, all these relationships Joel and Ellie interact with influence their decisions and motivations. They're certainly sad, but all we can do is hope Joel and Ellie learn something to pass along (also narratively: this concept is made literal with Joel "borrowing" something from the people they've come across.)
And the big thing was called a Bloater.

Basically the infection goes straight to the brain and takes over control. Stage one are “Runners”. - like what Sam was. They’re hyper aggressive and fast and have zero subtlety to them.
Over time the fungus starts to grow out of the head - they become stage 2: stalkers (like the one who kissed Tess). They can move more slowly and deliberately and thoughtfully. They can walk, hide, sneak up on you, and still see out of one eye.
When the fungus takes over the whole head and they lose eyes, they begin to use echo-location to hunt and turn into stage 3: Clickers. (Like the ones Ellie stabbed or the ones in the museum)
After many many years, what happens to the head of the clicker eventually happens to the whole body. Just fungal growth all over which acts as armor. and they become stage 4: Bloaters.
Most don’t make it even to the stalker or clicker phase. Almost no one makes it to become a Bloater. Most just die after the runner stage as the fungus begins to protrude from the brain (remember the huge pile of dead infected bodies in the museum they were walking over?).
For the bloaters don’t they have to be moist so maybe in water etc because if not they dry out like regular fungus/mold, they need dark and wet places
@@cloudy_zo6 the vast majority of infected you come across in the game are indoors, typically in dark places, and If they’re outdoors they’re like under bridges or highways and near water. When you encounter infected in broad daylight in the streets, they’re usually coming out of the houses they were staying in because they know you’re there.
So your theory is most likely correct. The infected definitely prefer indoor places, dark places, and damp places.

The big sucka is a Bloater. It goes Runner, Stalker, Clicker and then Bloater at least so far. They pushed some of those infected down 15 years ago so it makes sense at least 1 would age into a Bloater. And hence why there was a lot of clickers.

i love these reactions because there’s no spoilers, a youtuber who i used to like straight up commented a huge spoiler under my comment and it ruined it for me. i love you guys for not ruining it for me
I think all that they've been through, all the people they've lost will shape Joel's decision and Ellie's willing to accept that decision in the end.
There's something unsettling in realizing that Sam was just sitting there because he's deaf. An infected listens for their prey. Even if he ever went to go full on clicker he couldn't. Ellie broke her promise and fell asleep, so he was just sitting there. Waiting, screaming from the inside. As his brain was slowly eaten away. And until someone touched him, or came in his view, he would sit there forever.
And when Ellie touched him, Sam saw his own body attack her. Instead of becoming the superhero he always wanted to be. He became a monster, crying for his brother to help. He didn't even hear the shot. Just his vision slowly fading to black. He spent all night trying not to fall asleep. Then suddenly his eyes were slowly closing, afraid of what would happen once he woke up, but he never did.
Bill and Frank's story was sad, in a stoic kind of way, but just like Bill said at the end, it wasn't tragic. They'd lived a full life. Here Sam and Henry had hope, a chance, and a whole life ahead of them. Henry was so good that he protected Ellie before even realizing what he was doing. It was instinctual. That comes from deep inside.
But a little like Kathleen said, this kind of goodness, makes it hard to live in such a tragic world.

What I like about the character of Henry's younger brother is that in the game he's not deaf, but they chose to make that change, but also took the time and care to cast a actor who is actually deaf and use sign . Such great representation.
This episode destroyed me and I didn't start crying till like an hour later.
Frank and Bill, going out on their own terms is about as happy as the show gets

There’s 3 main “cliques” in the last of us game, Fedra, Hunters, Fireflies. And yes that was what we call a Bloater, in the game he is huge and grabs spore bubbles from his body and throws them at you.
What makes the bloaters bigger and stronger than the rest of the infected, they’ve been infected longer than the rest, so they’ve probably survived after outbreak day and the infection spread and took over their entire bodies. Bloaters I think were probably the first people to ever get infected and have been getting bigger and bigger for the last 20 years
They made this part of the game hit harder by building more of a connection between all four of them, you can definitely see in the end how this will affect both of them and how much they started to care for each other cause of the connection they built in such a short time.
Yeah this moment wasn’t that impactful in the game for me. Plus knowing what was coming in this ep, sounds easy. Don’t get attached, put defences up.
The visual representation of what they did to me was like that one when someone points at your chest and say you got something on your shirt.
And when I looked down they hit me with a frying pan.

If you are interested in the name of the big guy, and the other names for the different stages of the Infected (based on the game), read on:
Stage: (All true to their namesake)
1 - Runners: Most we've seen up to this episode. Little outward signs of infection, relatively dumb.
2 - Stalkers: Haven't seen so far. A little smarter, they hide and pop out when a victim is near.
3 - Clickers: Encountered in the museum in episode two and this episode quite a lot. Completely blind but use echolocation and have VERY sensitive hearing. Extra vicious.
4 - BLOATERS: The "big guy" we encountered in this episode. Heavy armor from fungal plating and incredibly strong. The ones Joel was referring to in episode two when he said some Infected have been around as long as twenty years.
You guys must have missed episode 4. In that episode Kathleen explained that Henry ratted out her brother's location to FEDRA and they captured and killed him. She's out for revenge.
I find a lot of reactors are missing this detail, which might be due to having conversation every once in a while so not 100% focused

One thing that makes the show rougher than the game is the overall pacing: in the game, you have these long, multi-hour stretches where you’re just exploring, scavenging, puzzle-solving and fighting. And then those longer stretches are punctuated by story/character beats, and some of those beats are tragic/traumatic.
But in the show, we’re jumping from story beat to story beat almost immediately, and so all the trauma and loss is accumulating WAYY faster, I think.

The sniper Joel killed probably had lots of bullets because they just overtook FEDRA and he was stationed to check for people trying to es ape so I'm sure Kathleen gave him plenty of ammo since Henry was her #1 priority.
They did this so much better than the game, I have to say. In the game, it’s only Joel who sees and fights the bloater, the giant shroombie, and barely kills it. But this is so much better for the show, I love it

BLOATERS are what happens when someone has been infected for more ver 15-20 years. The cordicept runs out of food and turns the hosts body’s into mycelium. Technically speaking, this is only stage where the host is dead, therefore a zombie type. the reason why it’s so thanky is the mushroom drys and create a bark around the host.
Bloater are after 10 years, not 15
The host is still 'alive' even then as the Fungus doesn't have muscles of it's own, it can only control them. It must use the host's living tissue to move the body.
A Bloater happens if the host does NOT die and is able to climb out of the wall.
And it is NOT 'tanky' because the mushroom dries
It is tanky because it just has LOTS of mushrooms on it.
Here is a cool fact:
Engineers at the University of Houston are using chitin and 3D printing techniques to produce high-impact multilayered coatings that can protect soldiers against bullets, lasers, toxic gas and other dangers.
Fungus cell walls are made of Chitin
THAT is why the more mushroom on the outside, the more bulletproof they are.
There is no happy endings in The Last of Us. At best you can have some happy moments for a moment. It's like that Green Day song: Boulevard Of Broken Dreams

That giant clicker is what we call a bloater, the next stage of infection after the clicker. They’re full of fungal plates which make them physically bigger and act as an armour.

The big thick boy you saw by the horde is actually a Bloater! The infected have four stages Runner, Stalker then Clicker then Bloater. A Bloater means they have been infected for many decades now and they are extremely resistant

Many would blame Ellie for Henry and Sam's tragic ending because she took it upon herself to try and save him and in turn taking away the time the brothers could have used to say their goodbyes. It could have been better for them but alas this episode just shows us how young she is. She is a literal child who, for a while now, has been told that she's special, important, the 'cure'. So she thought and hoped that her magical blood can help save her friend. Too bad that isn't how it works because why would it? That'd be too easy.
Ellie is growing up fast and is hardening from all this traumatic experience while Joel is getting attached.
I don't think the outcome would be much different. Probably Henry would tell Ellie and Joel to go without them while he stays with his brother and both die anyway.
Henry got her brother killed. To save his brother.

Fun fact: Sarah, who definitely was NOT infected by pancake mix or anything else, is the daughter of Thandiwe Newton, who plays Maeve in Westworld, who was also not infected, but is a robot.

Bloater is what they are named, really hard enemy in the game
The sniper mission the one part is based on is a fun (but not easy if I remember correctly) mission.
The big infected thing is called a bloater. It basically is like a mixture of a tank and a boomer from left 4 dead. It can throw spores that explode and it’s super strong and hard to take down.
Fat clicker is known as the "bloater", one of the most severe and advanced stages of infection. The child clicker in the car is known as a "stalker"

We should have a slight reprieve from traumatic moments in the next episode if they don't change it too much from the game. Then again, seeing Frank alive was a big change, and so is Sam being deaf, having leukemia and him and Henry being from the city.
