    The Tab s8 plus really seems the sweet spot!

  • @tofu_golem
    @tofu_golem Před 2 lety +74

    I'm a huge fan of the Tab S7+.
    Before, all Android tablets were less than 11 inches diagonally. For my aging eyes, this was just slightly too small for reading small text in e-textbooks, PDF files, and digital comics without a lot of pinching and zooming. All that pinching and zooming while trying to read an e-textbook while using an elliptical machine at the gym was really cumbersome.
    I was seriously thinking about getting the iPad Pro even though I left Apple's "walled garden" in disgust back in the days of MacOS 9.x (long before MacOS X, much less iPhones, iPads, etc.). While I was still mulling this over, the Tab S7 series was announced, so I bought the S7+.
    I don't regret it in the slightest.
    The Tab S7+ is amazing at rendering small text in a way that even my aging eyes can handle. It's been a dream.
    What you get out of these tablets really depends on what you're doing with it.
    I'm reading e-books, e-textbooks, social media, watching CZcams, and watching Netflix. At some point, I'm probably going back to school, where I had a great time using the Galaxy Tab S5e as a laptop replacement. I imagine the Tab S7+ will be even better.
    Bear in mind, I do not use the official cases (bad past experience with the lack of protection on Samsung official cases), so the size of the tablet does not affect my typing experience. I use a protective case with a built-in kickstand and a sensible Bluetooth keyboard (the Logitech K380) when I want to use it as a laptop replacement. I don't bother using Dex for this as I'm generally using one app at a time, and most note-taking apps look great on an Android tablet (unlike some other Android apps that don't make use of screen real estate very well).
    If you're interested in a laptop replacement, there are a few things that Android can't do. For example, the Android version of OneNote doesn't have that nice equation editor that the Windows version has. Both MS Office and Google Sheets/Docs/etc work really well on Android, and as a nice bonus, Android tablets have a lot more battery life than Windows laptop. This is especially useful if you're using it as a laptop replacement to take notes in class.
    The weight of the Tab S7+ is right at the edge of what I can comfortably hold in one hand while curled up on the couch for long periods of time. If it weren't for the small text issue, I would probably prefer the Tab S7/S8 vanilla version, as the smaller size makes it better for handheld use away from a table or desk.
    I'm guessing that the Tab S8 Ultra would be great for video conferencing and art, but would be strictly for desktop or tabletop use.

    The Ultra was a great preorder. Ended up paying $750 for the 512 GB Ultra with the free Keyboard. Got $600 for my tab S7+ via trade-in which I nabbed for $450 on BF. Then the education discount also knocked some extra $$ some off.

      I went the same exact route. The trade in offer for my Tab S7+ along with the free keyboard and education discount was so good I couldn't pass it up.

    • @ronakparikh
      @ronakparikh Před 2 lety +7

      I agree, most CZcamsrs don't understand this when they talk about the price, nobody is paying full piece for this thing. The ultra was cheaper than the s8+, I pre-ordered with an s22 ultra I was also buying for 25% off and I was also able to use $250 Samsung credit that comes with the s22 ultra on it + edu discount and the free keyboard. This worked out to $750 total for the 256gb/12gb ram model without any trade-in. This is by design, Samsung does this to make it seem like a good deal, the s8+ really only exists to make the ultra look like an unbelievable deal when you buy it for less than the s8+'s normal price and almost the s8's price but with a storage upgrade and keyboard on top of the upgrade the ultra is over the plus. So this guy's entire review is pretty much useless because he is using full retail prices to make the judgement which are not even remotely close to the real prices people are paying

    Ordered the S8+ 256gb as a replacement for my Tab A 10.1 that I bought in early 2017. My Tab A has been heavily used and has been great for its purpose. I travel for a living and mainly for streaming and downloading movies and videos. But it was time for an upgrade. I am a wildlife photographer (hobbyists) and I use Lightroom mobile on my note 20 ultra. Wanted to be able to use the S8+ for that also. Decided to go aftermarket keyboard for it and a separate case similar to my Tab A that allows me to hook it on the airplane seat in front of me! Now.... I am traveling in Canada and my S8+ was delivered yesterday at home so I am excited to get home!

    Dude, this is honestly a great review, and still pretty relevant with the new S9 lineup released yesterday. This time however, we're talking almost same specs, including same AMOLED 2x 120hz displays across the board. So bigger is not better in this case. As an artist who only cares about the pen and the size, I think S9+ is most optimal, or even S9. Ultra is too big and defeats the purpose of feeling like a portable handheld sketchbook. We're also getting a standalone Creative S Pen, with replaceable nibs, higher tilt angles, and better grip, that's the real upgrade artists were hoping for along with a matte screen protector for that pen and pencil feel without worrying about natural nib wear.

    I played with the Ultra at Best Buy. It is too big for a tablet, but with the keyboard to, as you said, replace a laptop it is very nice. I think for media digital arts people and artists in general it is probably nice to have the larger "canvas". The S8 was nice to hold. I'm still deciding between a Samsung model or an Ipad Pro. I have a newer MacBook air with the M1 and I have a Samsung style phone. The expandable storage and multitasking ability of the Samsung tablets is nice, but the simplicity of the Ipad is nice too. With the Ipad I would have to buy a pen for $100+.

    Good summary. I have been deciding between all 3. One of the big factors is that Samsung will give £120 each for my two iPad Pro with white spot as trade ins (worthless elsewhere) and there are some decent discount codes. The key issue is stock of all the keyboard cases with trackpads as with the discount promo codes around as get one for very cheap when you buy them with the tablet. Got one S8 256Gb on the way with trackpad case for £585 thanks to trade ins and code.

    I think S8+ for me. I've watched all your videos on these and at this point, although Samsung's tablets have advanced so far and are capable of replacing a true laptop, I think these devices still perform better as tablets. I would purchase primarily for the tablet usage as my priority, with capability to use it as a laptop alternative as a secondary purpose. S8 is a great tablet, but too small to use effectively as a laptop. S8 Ultra is a great size for a laptop and multitasking, but you compromise the portability and convenience of a tablet, AND it probably can't do the heavy lifting that a laptop can do. So S8+ is a good middle ground for me.

Put a 512GB microSD card in there and got the 256GB model. So, I don't have to constantly transfer my content off the main internal storage, if, in a design flow. It's a multitasking and content creation beast. I never close programs, and split screen is very efficient. I don't use the Samsung Note app that much except on my phone. One thing to keep in mind with the fingerprint sensor placement:
    If you are using the vanilla Tab S7 or Tab S8, you are probably expecting to use it away from a desktop or tabletop, in which case, the lack of protection in the official cases is a potential problem. You're doing things that increase the chances of dropping the device, in which case you really should get a more protective case. One problem with this is that many of those more protective cases make the fingerprint sensor in the power button harder to access.

I interpret in sign language for my church and there is some sitting down and standing up and if the center stage like feature will capture the transitions correctly that would be perfect so that I do not need to change the way that my phone is facing everything I change position. Plus, I would feel more comfortable to stand when I feel like I should be standing instead of trying to stay seated so that I can keep the visuals from getting messy.

    I think it's either the s8 or go ultra. For me I just use it to watch CZcams or Netflix and I use my laptop to do heavy work. I hold my tablet most of the time. So I guess s8..the s8+ is like kind of neither of both unless I really need the AMOLED.

    Moved from the S7 to the S8+. Still use them both. Was going to trade the S7 but it feels so good in the hands. Really like the S8+ been pumping out the work. I have some really good apps that utilize the screen size. Late at night I find the S7 is easier on my eyes, if not using my laptop. I don't like a lot of light going into my eyes if I am really tired. The ultra was unnecessary because I have a 360, I, use and love, I can flip into any mode. So, an unnecessary duplication. Bottom line is you can't go wrong. But, first, identify your usage needs.

    Great viewpoints as usual Mike! Though I have an unsual perspective.
    Ignoring price, I am actually comparing the Ultra, to Surface Pro 8 and the upcoming ROG Flow Z13.
    For me it comes down to the following:
    Tab S8 Ultra: For Movies mainly, the AMOLED screen is simply too gorgeous to ignore.
    MS Surface Pro 8: For Work and Design, it still has the best S Pen technicalities (e.g. Smoothness and Accuracy)
    ROG Flow Z13: For Gaming on-the-go, the sheer power and portability packed truly peaks across both worlds.
    With all that said, one really has to ignore the price. The moment you factor that in, ROG Flow Z13 is knocked out immediately.

      Well, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra would definitely be the best for your money.
      Besides Samsung Dex, the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 processor and the gouges 120Hz AMOLED Display it is still better because:
      1. Samsung offers; 4 Years of Android OS upgrades with (at least) 5 years of security updates
      2. The Galaxy Tab has the big advantage of the Ecosystem, not just because it is a Galaxy but also because of Android, you have way more flexibility
      3. It gives you a streamlined experience thanks to One Ui
      And last but definitely not least
      4. The S Pen! Together with Samsung Notes and the latency of just 2.8 ms....it's hard to describe it's just awesome!

      @@GT-qv1gl All the 3 choices I had compared have Stylus Pen functionality. The real debate is in which one does it best.
      Surface Pro Pen seems to be the most accurate and smooth in my own opinion. Although Samsung has the extra benefit of enabling the S Pen for its Eco-systems of apps. That, I would admit is quite a nifty benefit at times.

    • @Seroxm13
      @Seroxm13 Před 2 lety

      @@GT-qv1gl an iPad would be better for someone who is an Apple/iPadOS lover. For me, as a HUGE tablet lover and user, and even tho I love Apple and iPads, the Galaxy Tab S7/S8 series are way better, like it's no contest for me. Just love the freedom on Android and One UI. They feel like a laptop, while the iPads are too limited for me. The Tab S8 multitasking is life changing! And so is the costumization! And the additional "free" storage with SD card supports is a life saver! 🤩
      And iPads are way too overpriced, which is why I always recommend he Tab S8 or S7 for better value. The 11" Tab S8 can go down to $600-$550, while the 11" iPad Pro is $750. Then the Tab S8 comes with the free S-Pen, while with the iPad you have to spend $130 more. So in the end, the Tab S8 is like $300-$400 cheaper, which is why I never recommend the overpriced/expensive iPad Pros to anyone, better buy a Tab S8, iPad 9, iPad Air 5, iPad Mini 6 or an actual regular laptop.

    Maybe it's just me but I prefer the Galaxy Tab S8 Plus. I have managed to replace my laptop easily with the Samsung Tab S7 Plus. I find the tab S7 Plus you have just an amazing screen and surprising speakers with great quality with movies and the music. I do sometimes crave a bigger screen especially when seeing the tab S8 Ultra, then I remember that I lose more of the portability even though it's a replacement for my laptop if I'm going away travelling somewhere I can essentially just throw this in my bag and go on my way. I find the software way less janki than Windows 10, coming from a ASUS ZENBOOK. It just feels more user-friendly. The only downside would be that its Android not that there's anything wrong with Android as that's the same with my phone having the Samsung phone also, it's the lack of optimisation regarding apps and developers. Both Android and Samsung when it comes to software have made a lot of effort and have a lot of great features that make it feels great to use as a tablet I just wish developers got on board. I've managed to even luckily find work arounds regarding Photoshop and video editing what I occasionally use more so with photoshop, using Photopea and lumafusion. I honestly think you just can't go wrong with the plus range, as it feels personally like a true premium 2in1. The Bassline S7 was just too small for me I do like a big AMOLED screen for making and consuming. It may have middle child syndrome but you won't regret it. An extra perk is that on resale the Samsung tabs tend to hold their value better than some laptops like my own ASUS ZENBOOK where resale price drops dramatically, on my own experience at least.
