  • With the election less than a week away, I thought a look at the different major political parties' transport policies would be a good idea. It's a long one!

      Not necessarily. It can be argued that simply upgrading the existing lines would cost less, be better for the environment, while not supporting max speeds much slower than building a new line.

      @@julianmallchok6614 Except of course that HS2 exists for the purpose of capacity and not speed. If you are going to upgrade the existing line it would need to be 6 tracks and at that point you should just built an parallel route.

      The Green party is just a NIMBY party that opposes any change which isn't communism imo, they're even fielding a candidate in this election who's opposed to the East-West rail project between Cambridge & Oxford.

    The next government will surely be Labour, but I think its even more important who comes second place.
    If the Conservatives are the opposition, they will just spend 5-10 years waiting for Labour to cock up, and slide back into power to continue the cycle.
    If somehow the Lib Dems are opposition however, i feel they will actually ask meaningful questions about the EU & electoral reform. Acting as a meaningful opposition as opposed to just saying "you guys suuuuuuck" like the conservatives would

    The LDs are pledging a change to a PR system, for obvious reasons. While transport policy is obviously critical, a change to PR could change the country for the better permanently.

When a coalition has too many parties, sure, but coalitions force parties to work together, meaning that no one in the country has absolute power. sometimes it is bad, but had the tories been in a coalition for the past 5 years then perhaps their mental policies would have been stopped

    Big fan of your ferry idea, cost £292 for a car and 2 people return to the isle of wight last week because of the festival, a 40 minute trip.

      The IoW ferry is ridiculously expensive considering how vital a link it is. There should be a fare cap of some sort.

      @@GWVillagerthey have to nationalise the steam railway at some point, could connect a few of the main towns of the IoW without any new infrastructure (except for signalling, but they could just use the existing signalling and run a train every half hour or so)

    I have never thought about ferries in that way before! Even in public transport circles they're never bought up as a key part of the system. But I am now annoyed that I can't catch a ferry to Copenhagen...

    I wrote to my local MP, Dominic Raab, about local bus service, and he replied saying that wasn't within his remit and to write to the local council. Pah! Definitely not voting tory after that exchange. What a useless bunch of muppets.

    Thank you for your insights 👍 There is bus infrastructure investment going on near me, which I thought would be great, but by widening the junction and speeding up traffic they've made it more difficult and dangerous for anyone walking to it, and nothing to help anyone on a bicycle either. So the planners are either thick, or it was really only intended to make the road faster. It seems we need more local campaign groups more than ever.

    I take issue with your point that "local authority bus companies would be too small". When you look at municipals like Lothian, Reading, Cardiff and Nottingham, they are sizeable operators. Sure, particularly in metro areas or where you have an adjacent city and county authority, there may be a case for having a combined operator because there will be a high volume of cross-border traffic, but the more you do that the further you take the power away from the local community. We all know how well that can work when you have someone at Arriva HQ in Sunderland (or any of the other big groups) making decisions about provision in other distant parts of the country.

      Absolutely, large cities should have their own companies, and there are exceptions to every rule. But most local authorities are not large cities, and a broader strategy is needed.
      Anyway, I am making a video on this, which should clear things up a bit!

    I think we should just copy the German transport system, with the exception of high-speed trains. Everything works extremely well between regional and local trains,s bahns, u bahns, trams, buses. Its all super efficient (with the exception of the high speed trains!!!) and tickets cost half as much as public transport in the UK. Transport is divided into regions and often cities, who take responsibilty for the network in their region. We could do that in the UK, each county with it's hub at the biggest city. Would cost a lot of taxpayer money, but as it does it Germany the economic benefits very quickly outweigh the cost.

      It entirely depends on where. This is more of an issue for local authorities, to be honest, and the Greens are both good for cycle infrastructure and more likely to do well in local elections, so probably them during council elections. But, again, it depends on the political situation in the area.

    Including Scottish/Welsh/N. Irish parties would be kind of a moot point because transport is a devolved matter outside of England, so the Westminster elections wouldn't have that big an effect on transport up here anyway.

    My transport plan would be:
    1) New X shaped high capacity UK rail network centred on Birmingham, replacing most existing intercity routes, including a station at...
    2) A hugely expanded East Midlands Airport to create a more central UK hub airport and take pressure off of Heathrow and cancel Heathrow expansion.
    3) New overnight sleeper trains running north within the UK and internationally to France, Spain, Switzerland and Italy 😢
    4) A hugely expanded ferry network focusing on hubs in large cities where possible with Liverpool to Dublin, Hull to Hamburg, Newcastle to Oslo and Gothenburg and Edinburgh to Copenhagen and Bergen being potential routes.
    5) Increase capacity on local/interregional trains by using longer trains and frees up capacity.
    6) Expansion of existing tram networks and better integration between trams, buses and local trains.
    7) Expand the £2 max bus fare scheme to trams and introduce a similar fare cap for local trains.

    Some of the statements made by reform are just absolute twaddle. Such as ‘Where safety is critical’, &’ Stop war on Drivers’ that I found quite amusing hearing you disprove them. Not to mention the high controversy when it comes to their members as well. Great Video as always.

      It's not uniform - many on the right do support HS2. It's just there are a huge number of (to be frank) self-interested radicals who oppose almost all state spending, especially if they do not see direct benefits to their area.

    There is a DFDS ferry to Gothenburg it is a truck ferry and have used it, would not recommend it for families, with Truck Drivers watching porn at 9.00 am in the lounge. However since Brexit you can nolonger take a private vehicle on it, because the commercial ports they use do not have the facilities for the extra checks required on non commercial traffic post Brexit. Another case of Britain voting to place trade sanctions on itself!

    The thing that upsets us in Wales about HS2, is that it has been categorised as an England and Wales project.
    It goes nowhere near Wales and reduces the amount of money available to spend on railways that are actually in Wales. Cancellation of the rest of HS2 has allowed some extra funding to come through, but nowhere near as much as should have been allocated had HS2 been England only.

      HS2 if fully built would've massively reduced congestion around Crewe and Chester, allowing trains into and out of north Wales from destinations around the UK to be far more reliable and faster

      @@KingFinnchyes but North Wales isn’t as important economically, educationally, culturally and politically when compared to South Wales. Old Oak Common wont do much in the way of reducing journey times to Newport, Cardiff, Port Talbot or Swansea.

      Had HS2 been built as intended not only as pointed out already would it have enabled an increase in cross country services in North Wales that need to interface with the WCML around Crewe and Chester but also mid Wales and the border regions that interface with the WCML around Birmingham. Of course it does not help South Wales but whatever you are not going to improve cross country services in the South without work in England.

    I'm one of the silently seething regarding the dash to the drains standards of political discourse in this country.
    Ecstatic that I don't live in the USA each time their election cycle gears up again, in that I don't have to be soaked in such impolite and unedifying abuse that their candidates revel in.
    However, my careful what you wish for comment is because all the parties are as you say so scared to say anything that might upset middle england voter that we're not being treated like adults.
    Everything potentially difficult and nasty is being saved for the days after the election.
    Picture the scene:
    Oh we're very upset to find that there's no money in the coffers so we have no option but to increase this and tax that.

    Reform are right about scrapping HS2. Massive money waste, need to start from the beginning and actually get a good high speed rail project rather than a train that goes from near london to near birmingham a bit quicker

      I daresay what do you want out of a "good high speed rail project"? HS2 does vastly more than go London to Brum quickly - it is and always has been about capacity, and it does a good job with regards to that (it should have gone to Manchester and Leeds for the full benefits, though). As I said, however, this is all irrelevant now. It is under construction, it simply cannot be cancelled now. Over £20 billion has already been spent, and the economic growth required to pay this back cannot be willed into existence.

      Regardless of what you think of HS2, GWV is right about it being irreversible. The construction has already completely ripped through huge landscapes going for miles and it's not like there's any way of just putting everything back any more without spending so much more money.

      @@GWVillager I get your points and in my ideal world I’d like to see it a full project rather than a half arsed version. A HS2 as far as Scotland with intermediate calling points such as B’ham and Manchester would be a really good addition to our infrastructure. Unfortunately, through years of Tory rule, this has now been downgraded to a slightly faster train between near london and Birmingham. I’d like to see work paused while someone with some common sense comes along and reforms it into a proper project again (and while they are at it, why don’t we take it into London too!)

      ​@@FrecklesAviation The Euston tunnels were on the verge of getting the go ahead just before the election was called, and it should be relatively straightforward for them to start construction under a new Government. Whilst the full thing is undeniably better, London to Birmingham is still a considerable capacity relief - most existing intercity services will move onto it and transport between Britain's two largest cities will be transformed. It's still a worthwhile project, just less overwhelmingly so.
      But, again, it doesn't matter. It's too late now.

      Also, no commitment to HS2 is because the govt. has not revealed how much is built... If it's sufficiently done then keep going but otherwise it isn't worth it. Basically we don't have enough info yet thanks to the Tories.

      @@davidty2006 My understanding that for phase one it was clear, but for the route up to Crewe, and how much land is actually sold off it is not.
      Also why on earth we had to be better than everyone else and build HS2 to something higher than the European spec is beyond me...

      I have no license whatsoever. But that is a near-objective statement: we need to shift more journeys out of cars and onto other modes, obviously not for every journey and obviously not everywhere, but a strategy is needed.

    What I think Labour want is a copy of Manchester's "Bee Network" but nationwide (this won't work imo) and they want a de-facto nationalisation of Railways (imo also won't work).
    Imo what needs to be done with the railways is ending the TOC contracts, closing down Network Rail and handing over the railway property to the TOCs i.e. SWR will no longer have a contract with the DfT, but will own the South-Western Mainline and will not be UK state-owned, therefore allowing them to make as little or as much money as they choose (no party is presently offering this).
    As for Reform UK's "War on Motorists" (along with the similar ideas from other "right-wing" parties), it is understood that the left-wing parties want to de-facto ban cars through the construction of new Low-Traffic Neighbourhoods and creation of Clean Air Zones (e.g. ULEZ) which is also seen as a stealth tax (like what the BBC TV License fee is).
    I might add that I plan on voting for the Heritage Party (not mentioned in the video) so I am extremely biased in favour of Free Market Capitalism here.

      I very much disagree with your opinion here but find it really interesting I can’t lie. I feel the whole motivation of free-market capitalism is competition and I don’t see how SWR would have enough competition if they owned the SW.Mainline. They could as you say invest in it as much or little as they want but people will use trains because they need to so I only see them investing the bare minimum and then screwing over the commuter. Obviously I haven’t got any proof they would do this it’s just a worst case scenario.
      I’m guessing the Heritage Party wasn’t mentioned as they’re only standing in 41 seats so even if they won all of them would still only come in third place

      @@Ro99 That's exactly why the Heritage Party were not mentioned, same with similar small parties like the SDP, English Democrats, UKIP, Homeland Party, Libertarian Party UK and so on.
      I can also understand why people don't support my views on the economy but after 100+ years of post-war Keynsian economic consensus among the big 4 parties including Reform UK, I think it is time for some change.

      thats what would happen if private companies owned the track....
      Im not against them being on the railways but have them ALONG SIDE a national operator. Isn't that best for everyone? If one falls behined use the other. As for the whole "war on motorists" greens are the main one... They want to ban ALL ICE vehicles by 2037 which means a vehicle from 2029 would be going for scrap despite being old and cheap enough for someone up ere in the north to buy and having plenty of life left.. Not to mention the question around the 40+ ones.

      ​@julianmallchok6614 I will, labour ruined our country last time, conservative are dim witted, so therefore the only good party is reform, it's something new and interesting, in my town there has been a labour candidate since 1922. So yeah we need change, proper change.

      @@reubendorman If you're referring to the financial crash, that wasn't caused by Labour. It was an international thing.
      Furthermore, I would be concerned about Reform's and Nigel Farage's history with racism; if you look around a bit, you can find all sorts of it.
      Even so, if you really are disillusioned with both major parties, why not look into your local Lib Dem or Green candidate? Even an independent! Even if they won't get in in your constituency, your actual MP will see the votes for smaller candidates, and potentially adopt some of their policies to attract more voters.
      As GWVillager said, we do technically live in a democracy, so you can get your opinion heard without voting for a party as radical as Reform.
