Lol at how the commentators were going off about the deliberate call. These days, that would be deliberate without doubt, and they would be complaining if it WASN'T penalised. It was quite obviously deliberate to me.
"These days" it would be, but back then deliberate was paid about as much as kicking in danger. I was at this game, I can tell you half the crowd was losing it at that call. And if they weren't, they certainly lost it when that North player did basically the same thing later, to no call. Both Roos and Lions fans didn't know what was going on. Good game, good memories, but how the umpires got off that field unscathed I'll never know..
The rules at the time weren’t the same as now and Scott was seeking to gain ground onto a wing that had Lions on it. If there weren’t any Lions lateral to the centre of the ground on the side Scott kicked the ball, then yes. It would be a free. And even still, umpiring is meant to be consistent, the kick by the Kangaroos a minute later was just as deliberate and not paid. So no consistency. Davey’s push in the back after a mark paid should’ve been a 50m penalty. No reason for any player to push someone after a mark.
But still well fought game by both sides. Especially the Roos to take it up to the greatest side of all time like that 🦁👍🏻
You seem to understand this was decades ago, so I don't understand the point you're making? Yes we know "these days" they pay it.
Point is that decades ago they had the wrong perception of deliberate.

@@BadgerFromOz that’s what we were always told to play by. Play to the umpires whistle, they’re the ones controlling the game. Timekeeper may let them know the time has ended but they still have to acknowledge it for the play to stop.

Extra time? I would have liked to have gotten a winner in Extra Time. A draw is a nothing result for what was such a great game of Aussie Rules football.
But why should two teams get more time to score enough points to win if they couldn't during the time set for a match? Should a close loser be allowed more time to score more because they almost won?
WillTheMallet, you only have to look at the faces of the players after a match has ended in a draw/tie to see that a draw is a nothing result. The players are very puzzled, and don't know whether they should be feeling elated or devastated. Most of those players I reckon would prefer to either win or lose than to guts it out for 120 minutes just to get a nothing result. Playing Extra Time when the scores are level at the end of Regulation Time gives them the opportunity to do just that. It gives the fans the opportunity to come away from the match a lot more satisfied that they were able to see a proper result too. A far better outcome than the nothing result which we get from a tie.
