    Dunno if Wirtual is reading comments on CZcams but just in case: you don’t wash rice for sanitary reasons but to remove excess starch and what not and it makes it less sticky. Whether you should depends on the type of rice as well as the dish.

      You also wash for sanitary reasons. I remember my parents, whenever they bought a bag of rice, checking it to remove any pebbles or bugs that might've got in, and then washing it to clean any residual dirt before cooking. Granted, depending on the storage procedure of the farm/market, you might not need to wash it, but better safe than sorry.

      It's kind of not a big deal either way. You can wash it or not wash it, people act like it's disgusting not to but it's still perfectly edible, just changes the texture a little. I prefer washing it but it does take some time to do.

    • @JustinBA007
      @JustinBA007 Před 10 měsíci +34

      @@philcoast1031in most first world countries, this is not a problem unless you are buying from a farmers market or something. In the US, I have never once seen anything in rice that wasn't supposed to be in there. Growing up, my parents never washed their rice, so I prefer the starchy texture, so I don't wash mine either.

    As a French I can assure you that most French do not "pretend" not to speak English. They generally either genuinely don't speak it, or are capable or reading and writing it but are absolutely awful at understanding spoken English or speaking it themselves. And there is a simple reason for that: there isn't really any incentive at all for French people to learn English... The movies and series are always dubbed, pretty much everywhere we go on vacation there will be at least one person who will know French, and even some neighbouring countries (Belgium, Switzerland) have French as an official language (and 36 countries in the world do). So if the person doesn't make an explicit effort to learn proper English communication skills, they never get a chance to practice it... And even when they do, the lack of proper exposure to regular conversations causes their accent to be atrocious (I've been in business calls involving fellow Frenchmen speaking English, and I sincerely felt the pain of their interlocutors who had to endure and try to understand their accent...).
    So yeah, the French generally are awful at English.
    That being said, Paris is a whole topic in itself, and a lot a French people dislike Paris for their rudeness and arrogance (even towards other French), so I'd not be surprised if some parisians just wanted to piss you off just for the sake of it...

    • @ghislainbugnicourt3709
      @ghislainbugnicourt3709 Před 10 měsíci +14

      Add to that that French people judge each other's accent a lot, even if it's "too" good, whereas in many other countries people are much more supportive of the effort.

    • @Vaasref
      @Vaasref Před 10 měsíci +5

      So much of that bad press could be avoided by just 3 snippets of French :
      Never forget to start conversation with "bonjour", and when people aren't paying you attention already (ex. a grocery store employee stocking up shelves), add "excusez moi de vous déranger".
      If you don't talk any french, then continue with "parlez-vous anglais ?".

    • @tim..indeed
      @tim..indeed Před 10 měsíci +7

      Yeah when I've been to the French countryside the people have been nice but they genuinely can't speak any English whatsoever.
      Also another reason is that Frenchmen don't need to learn English for vacations is because they already have everything inside their country. Small and huge mountains in the Alps, beaches on the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, beautiful cities and towns with massive regional variety. Hard to justify leaving the country for a vacation.

    • @mawangshallhang
      @mawangshallhang Před 10 měsíci

    About the French not wanting to speak English, either to tourists in France or to people in English-speaking countries, it's quite complicated. My understanding of it, as a French who loves to speak English and who try to improve anytime I can, is that, for a lot (like 75 to 80%) of French people, when they are confronted to english speaking people and to the fact that they have to understand and speak english, they are taken back to their lessons in English, when they were in school, where you are being judged and mocked by at least 50% of your classmates for even trying to speak correctly. This everyday, every year pressure induce a really low average level in English, and a really nasty brain mechanism where you panic for trying to understand. And when you panic, you go to something you understand and master. In this case, French. It's probably not the entire reason, but for someone who seen and experienced scholarship in France, I can say it's something that is extremely present, no matter your age ^^ Anyway, great video Wirtual, as always, so thanks ^^

    To respond to the french not talking English, we have a "thing" that when you are good at English, others are rude to you because you seem to be above of them and when you are bad at English, others tease you with your bad accent. That created a lot of people not talking in English even if they can...

    Just a quick addition to the discussion in this video. Rinsing rice is not bad, it doesn't really lose many nutrients (but it doesn't also lose any bad things, like arsenic present in rice). Rinsing rice is mainly done to change the ending texture of rice, making it more separated and less "sticky", losing some of the excess starch. So rinsing rice is good if you need to make plain rice, that needs to be more grainy and separated. On the other hand, if you need to make a risotto, which benefits from it being more creamy, washing the rice will end up in a worse risotto.

    I just want to clarify the point about french refusing to speak english, as a french man.
    1) Not so many peoples speak english in france, maybe 1 on 10 or less (at least where I live), or very poorly (like me). And the french enducation system is made for making you feel dumb if you don't speak perfectly french. So if a french person don't speak perfectly english, he will (most of the time) be so afraid to look stupid that he will prefer to don't speak english at all.
    2) Politeness. In france, we have the feeling that, if smbdy try to speak french, answer him in english is like telling him he is so bad at french that he should'nt try to speak it at all, and that's rude, so we answer him in french (possibly correct him so he can progress) to encourage him. If someone speaks to me in english I don't speak french at all.

    You don't NEED to wash rice (but if you wash rice after you cooked it, you can't cook at all tho, it's rice, not pasta), but you can. General rule of thumb, if you're making a dish where the rice obsorbes juices, generally not washing the rice is fine because it add to the sauce. If not, wash it before hand. The easiest way is to pour it into a bowl or cup, pour water in, mix it around with your hand so the water gets white, and then pour out the water. Repeat until the water is clearer, but it doesn't need to be a perfectly clear.
    But it depends on every dish, as well as what type of rice you are using.

    5:20 yes, in france people act that way (I say it as a french), and i sometime heard the reason:
    1-lot of french really do not understand, it's really not something rare in France to not talk english well
    2-Just, they don't want to talk to anyone, and even if someone that don't speak English talk to them, they will try to escape, so that's not against the foreigner but against stranger in general.
    I have some other reason to why people will not respond you but none of them explain the profound reason, we are really a country where grumpy people and there is not a way to discern the one that will talk to you in English and want to know you and the one who will not.
    8:26 There are more similarities between English and French than between Spanish and French, the only thing that would make them closer is the fact that Spanish is almost only a Latin Language like French while English have some part that are not, but the relathionship between france and england have make their language more alike, there are a lot of English word that come from france and a lot of French word that come from UK. so, even if the person might know spanish, if you find out he don't understand a word, just go back to english and try to use the most basic word.

Even when we met one or two people who didn’t speak English and we spoke in our very basic French they were happy at us doing our best. Really went against our expectations based on what everyone says!

      The French have gotten significantly better in speaking languages that aren't French in the past 20 years. Nowadays the teens that learned to speak English and went online more are starting to take over French society. So in big cities, you should get away with speaking English every time.

    For the record, rinsing rice before cooking changes the finished properties of your rice making it stickier, gummier, etc. depending on what kind of rice. I'm not a riceologist so idk what it does to which rice, but that's why some people rinse it.

    Hey, french here. I was listening to the discussion about how french avoid speaking English. Well, some says this is only in Paris but I never truly visited Paris although i've been in many places in Europe. I have to say the problem is more complicated, let me explain: A lot a people do actually learn English in France but those who can speak English are mostly students or people that have an important function in their company. On the other hand, you have those who stop following the "standard" studying cursus like university and who prefer following a more professional way, and most of the time they don't learn English as accurately and sometimes not even at all. What I mean is that when you visit a bar or when you buy something in a store, it's 90% of the time people who stopped following "standard" studies to go work earlier so most of the time, people which who foreigners interact are not good at English. The EXACT same thing can be say of Italy and Spain except in the north of Spain like Barcelona where a LOT of sellers speaks french (but french and Spanish are very similar unlike English and french)
    I don't even know if my English is good or not. Like many young french, I had to learn it all by myself because France sucks at learning English.

      bruh the way you write english is pretty much perfect. there are a few words slightly "wrong" but everything you wrote was easy to understand which i think is the most important thing. personally i think english speakers need to go easier on those learning it as a second language. often times we pick apart tiny mistakes which don't really matter and which english people oursleves often make too. but yeah, really i just wanted to say that if you speak it even half as good as you write it then you're english is really good

      Or if you get it from local farms, or farmers markets. The stuff in stores sure, but if you grow your own, get it from local farmers, etc then washing can be beneficial, but yes, for sanitary reasons the rice you buy in stores in most first world countries is comparatively very clean and doesn't need to be washed for safety. I do like my rice a bit less sticky than I'd get right out of the box, but I don't rinse it very thoroughly so it still clumps a little bit.

    As a French guy teaching English in middle schools and highschools, there is a huge issue concerning confidence while speaking English due to our accent. Memes are proving it too… and since the french language is based on syllable emphasis while English isn’t (we call it prosody), it is also very difficult for french people to speak the language. Finally, and that’s a french problem still, we tend to put pressure on people who try their best like « oh he’s flexing on us ». So most of my students will just do their best french accent while speaking in English just to avoid this pressure… trust me, it’s a constant battle to make them realise that phonetic is more important than the accent in itself. Though, depending on where you’re going and if you try your best first, I’m pretty sure French people, even with the worst English comprehension, will try to help ! But not in Paris, those guys are different

    I want to point out that appart from the terrible people that do definitely exist and insist on foreigners speaking french, there's also a lot of french people that won't speak english just because they are absolutely terrible at english. French people that can speak english fluently are an exception (and some of them still make zero effort in the pronounciation department) which often gives a bad image of our country. But we're not assholes, well at least most of us aren't, it's just that the average french person is terribly incompetent with foreign languages, english included, and sometimes especially english.
    And on a side note, Paris might call itself the most beautiful city in the world or whatever, people living there are most definitely not the nicest in the country, which surely doesn't help...
