I've lived within 15 min of Lake Lanier most of my life. A few points:
-That number, ~700, is representing only what has been confirmed... The actual number is likely much higher
-Most of the towns were bought out fairly, however
-Oscarville was a black community in the area. Most every resident there was given a choice: take next-to-nothing for your property or die
-The real horror came after most of the black families tried to set up in neighboring Forsyth County, which (although it is more diverse, now) still has the reputation as the most racist county in GA... for very good reasons considering the past

okay. Ignorance in today's society is unbelievable! what is wrong with saying "unfortunately we have lost countless human lives in Lake Lanier"? HUMAN LIVES! NOT JUST BLACK LIVES! Losing a life is a huge tragedy especially for the loved ones that were left behind. It doesn't hurt less bc they were white or black. What if i made an announcement as a public speaker saying "i regret having to stand before you with the tragic news of the collapse of the world trade center claiming many WHITE LIVES, destroying the WHITE FAMILIES that were left behind"?
In today's society that would be labled as racism! WHY? Bc it is racist. And ignorant. It is also racist for any one human being to not only feel that their lives are more important than everyone else that died, but to insist that EVERYONE ELSE FEELS THAT YOUR LIFE MEANS MORE THAN THE HUMAN BEING THAT LOST THEIR LIFE RIGHT ON SIDE OF YOU!!!!! Ridiculous! All human life is equal! Everyone screams equality as they are separating themselves from society by thinking that your life means more than your neighbor simply bc of skin color. Ridiculous, total ignorance! Call me a white boy, i am going to call you black boy! You want equal rights? Then act as my equal! Don't expect to be put on a totem pole bc of skin color. We are all equal.

So you don't get the point of people pointing out the blacks and the black town....black people were killed if they didn't leave...there weren't alot of opportunities for black people.. racism was rampant..so for black people to have a town of their own where they could thrive was more than a big deal...the black people who did get paid for their property didn't get what it was worth..by kicking them out of there they were sent off to certain death and or poverty/homelessness.. whereas the white people could go anywhere else and be ok and were given enough money to do so...black people for a long time were not even allowed to own property of any kind BY LAW so owning houses and businesses was like they had reached the promise land...I'm not sure how young you are but you must be very young...check out a history book..so let me tell you about the sit-ins and why they happened..ahh look it up..so yes sir there was a huge difference in what happened to the black people that got flooded out vs the white people..the blacks went from living well im a society that cherished them to being forced to take menial jobs or not being able to find work or food or shelter in societies that despised them..and the white people just moved bought more land and were fine

There's also an old race way under there too. And there's A LOT more dead people in there than 700, it's easily thousands. There are always dozens of fresh flyers for missing people plastered on the billboards at the parks, and boat ramps, and marinas. There's probably like 700 people that get disappeared there a year, not total since 1956. 😂😂😂

The TRUE story is much more detailed and horrific. There's legit reasons why people think that lake is cursed. And the Georgia locals all know the truth, whether the Caucasian ones want to admit it or not.

"Somebody just died" actually 200 people have died in that lake since 2002, and it's been thought to of claimed well over 700 lives since it's creation. It was built over 20 cemetaries that where part of the black community.
Thing is, Lake Lanier is not that dangerous. And I mean that as in Lake Lanier does not have as many dangers as like, Lake Michigan for example. It's not the most popular lake in Georgia either. More people are dying there than they should.
When the area was flooded, it was not cleaned before hand. They left the trees instead of cutting them down, which definitely contributes to boating accidents. They never took out the building debris despite all of it containing lead paint either. They just flooded it.
It has also been tested as the most polluted water in Georgia. Between the embalming chemicals and the lead paint buildings, it's easy to explain why.
As of 2023 this year, there has finally been a ban on swimming.
