Before Pépé Bradock was known for crafting sublime, experimental dance tracks (ugh, he's the best), the Gilb'r run Versatile released Synthèse in 1998 which collected his early vinyl only output for the KIF label. It's a mixed bag of beats with 12 tracks in all, pretty much half house tracks, half downtempo skits that show his hip hop roots; one of those, Un Pépé Dans La Dentelle, even ended up on Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz II. The more house-y productions were big with people like Derrick Carter and the Daft Crew.
The house-y songs on Synthèse do shed light on the direction he was heading in, ie further into left field House and Techno territory; on cuts like Lara and The Charter especially you can see the ideas bubbling. For me, two playable highlights from the album are 18 Carats, all jazzy loops, cut up piano and hints of filter house, and Vermeille, with its Aretha vocal snippet, warm pads and space sounds (how about that gospel outro!). The flashes of brilliance and careful attention to detail that make his coming productions so memorable shine through. Geniale!
