  • With all the money you spend on dry-cleaning silk dresses, you could buy, well, more silk dresses. The Laundress co-founder, Lindsey Wieber Boyd, tells us how you clean silk in the washing machine.

I would NEVER dry-clean silk! Not even once, because once the Dry-clean solution is in the silk, real stain removing becomes virtually impossible. Home-wash from day one, in delicate laundry liquid, with a few ml of vinegar as needed for stain removing; and a coolest steam setting on your steam-iron to restore the lustre.
Well done Laundress! You know your stuff.

Do silk polyester or silk cotton blends require special care, or can they be washed and dried normally?

i have no problem with machine washing my silks but when i hang them to dry, they get stiff & a bit scratchy. Is it possible that my washer isn't rinsing the silk items well enough? I would appreciate any help. thanks m

Hi there! We recommend giving your washing machine a thorough cleaning before attempting again. If this continues to happen, then you are best handwashing. Handwashing is the safest method for washing silk!

I know this is a 5 year old comment, but the solution is probably lack of movement, you need wind or a fan or something to keep the protiens in the fabric from making the fabric scratchy

586Rexford You may want to check out this link "www.howtocleanstuff.net/how-to-restore-shine-to-silk/"? However, I have not tried this myself.

Coolest steam setting on your steam-iron should do the trick, with a little vinegar in the wash.
