That way the tension in the cable was far greater than the weight of the slingshot and unfortunately greater than what the cable could bear. Yes, gravity was the acting force. But if they had taken into account this issue, the cable would've been strong enough.

Definitely! That would be a 4x4 inch (or in germany 10er Verkant :) ) wood with about 2,5m length and two steel shovels as a "tip". Maybe with some plywood vanes as well... would go 300m just as easy and could impale an elephant! (but reload time is awful...)
