    For those who want to play real baroque solo repertoire, but aren't advanced enough for Bach and Telemann, I can highly recommend "The Genteel Companion" by Humphrey Salter, 1683, published by Moeck. It's easy stuff, but really has the character of baroque solos (as opposed to folk dances). Plus, it was actually written for amateur recorder players. It's what got me hooked on playing baroque recorder years ago.

    YES !! - This is exactly the video I wanted from you - my favourite period for the Recorder is the Baroque period and I've been looking for some books on this subject so this video is a Treat.

    And may I just add here that if anyone is ever looking for any sort of classical music arranged for the recorder (any size) that they can't find anywhere else, I own an Etsy shop named Pine Tree Piper where I arrange classical, traditional, and hymns for recorder and tin whistle. I absolutely take requests and commissions! Check it out!

    I bought the baroque solo book several years ago on your recommendation, and agree with all of the good things you said about it. Glad you mentioned the excellent solo books by Eric Haas. His three alto duet books are wonderful too.

    I bought that baroque solo book but I still cant play much from it 3 years in. I can now scratch the surface though! Now I play lots of baroque transverse flute, too. Love that Quantz flute book.

    Interesting. The first collection sounded familiar. I think it is also published (or was years ago) by Barenreiter (BA 8259.) They call it 'Plaisir Musicale' and, just checked, the introduction is in German and French, not English. It is by Bernard Thomas, as you say, and my copy has discoloured page edges due to lots of use over many years. Good collection. I will look for the others you mention - thanks!

    The recorder is an underrated instrument. According to AI, the flute provides a wider range and greater sound projection, but I still love how accessible the recorder is for millions of children.

    I hope someone can help me. I'm returning to playing recorder after many years. In the meanwhile, I had a neck injury and my hands now shake somewhat. I'm fine with all the first six holes, but I am struggling with the double holes. Does anyone know of a specific video anywhere that can give me specific exercises ro help with this? Thank you ahead of time.

    why pieces for flute must be transposed to the recorder?
    can't i just use an tenor recorder? the lower note is the same C as the flute

    • @mantistoboggan2676
      @mantistoboggan2676 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah you could use tenor. Alto was just the most popular size during the baroque period if I recall correctly.

      The lowest note on a baroque traverso is D, not C (or B natural as variant foot) like modern Boehm flute.
      Hence like a voiceflute recorder.
      As the range of the traverso is much bigger than a recorder, a tenor will be off the upper range in some places.

But on the off chance, when you say "intermediate players" how would you express that in terms of ABRSM performance exam grades/levels? Is 4 not quite there, yet, for example? Good question Austin! So I’d say the Baroque solo book here is mostly grade 6+ and much of it 8+, with a few movements that are lower. The solo books by Eric Haas are more varied- definitely a little of material playable for around grade 4!
