    Man, why doesn’t hardly anyone teach these with a droning bass note like you said at the opening of the video? I read books, asked questions, studied theory lectures, and modes immediately made sense when someone showed me the bass note trick. Drone the low E, play E Major scale against it. Then drone it, and play A major. You immediately hear the difference between Major, and mixolydian (and so forth). But all this explaining about playing the same scale, but starting on a different note, never reaches anybody that I’ve ever seen. Once you hear it in context, it all makes sense.

      This is the only way modes make any sense. Modes are just what note you start on in a scale and by doing so impacts your note choice. If the bottom note usually given by the bass is not rooted on the chord or one of the chord tones you wouldn't imply any scale really from your guitar playing. You would have to be playing the unique notes from that scale and even then it probably wouldn't sounds much different. For instance without the bass note how would you tell if you were playing in B flat or E flat if you don't play an A flat at any point....you wouldn't (it would be completely ambiguous)

  • @m.vonhollen6673
    @m.vonhollen6673 Před 5 měsíci +2

    A mode is the major scale but starting on a different note.
    First W-W-1/2-W-W-W-1/2 is the formula for Ionian or the major scale. Play that and flatten the 7 (b7) is Mixolydian; instead sharpen the 4 (#4) for Lydian.
    Now the 3 minor modes: for Dorian, it’s b3 and b7; for Aolian (Natural Minor), it’s b3/b6/b7; for Phrygian, it’s b2/b3/b6/b7.
    There’s only one mode for a Diminished triad or a Minor7b5 chord which is Locrian b2/b3/b5/b6/b7. - Now, write out the 7 modes in order with their formulas. Start with one octave of each, all from the same starting note. Never refer back to the scale they are from. Use your ears!

  • @unclesixer

    When I first tried to learn modes on my own they made no sense... years later I realized they are just patterns and re-arranged intervals... but my real breakthrough in understanding was when I STOPPED thinking of them "in order" and instead thought of them as 3 major modes, 1 of which I rarely use an 3 minor modes, 1 of which i rarely used... and locrian... then the 2nd part of the breakthrough was realizing certain chord progressions really match-up nicely with certain modal feels. At the end of the day, modes just create musical tension and release each in their own way.... but I wish 17 year old me would not have spent time agonizing over when i should try to drop a locrian lick into a guitar solo, which was just an exercise in frustration that lead me to ignoring modal ideas and thought process for decades.
    Thank you for the lesson, but you should consider "grouping" your lesson into the 3 major modes and the 3 minor modes for the sake of better clarity... and then mention locrian for the people who need/want to know about it for the sake of completeness.

  • @michaelholmes9153
    @michaelholmes9153 Před 5 měsíci

    You nailed the exact same way I learned modes. I first learned in G Major, then A was Dorian, B was Phrygian, C was Lydian and so on. I COULD NOT relate to that.The patterns were the same if the first chord was major. But when you put the modes in the SAME KEY then suddenly it made sense. You see the relationships between notes better such as major 3rd, minor 3rd, flat 5 or 6, flat 7 or natural 7. You can now use the old way of learning too with the modes based off tones of the major scale. Still sucks that way though.

    What happened to Egnaters? A decade ago they were everywhere. They're still one of the best pedal platforms out there. If you use AIAB drive pedals into the front of the amp, the Tweakers ability to switch between fender, vox and Marshall tone stacks let you match them up. If you're using actual preamps and modelers, the Rebel let's you go from 20 or 30 watts down to 1, and switch between 6V6 and EL84s on the fly.
    Plus you can buy a used head for like $250.
