  • Ávila is sometimes called the Town of Stones and Saints, and it claims that it is one of the towns with the highest number of Romanesque and Gothic churches per capita in Spain. It has complete and prominent medieval town walls, built in the Romanesque style. The town is also known as Ávila de los Caballeros, Ávila del Rey and Ávila de los Leales (Ávila of the Knights, the King and the Loyalists), each of these epithets being present in the town standard.

Vivía en Sevilla, y cambié Sevilla por Ávila. Dos ciudades muy diferentes pero las dos muy bellas llenas de arte y de historia. En Ávila soy muy feliz.

Those walls are amazing -has to be one of the most stunning medieval places in Europe -the amount of stone and incredible hard work that had to be done to complete those stunning walls.I haven't as yet gone into the history of the place to find out why those huge walls were even necessary in the first place and if they were even effective in defeating the enemies of the place.I would imagine that it was the Moorish threat in the first place that made them necessary or maybe the internicine conflicts between the emrging Christian kingdoms.Thank goodness they were not demolished as happened in many other cities when walls were no longer needed.

Ávila was not founded in the 11th century. It is a big mistake. Current walls were built in the 11th/12th centuries replacing the ruined ancient roman walls. Ávila has more thsn 2000 yesrs of History. All the area was settled by Celts from the 8th century BC until the romans arrived there in the 2nd century BC.
