  • Roping Saddles Restoration | Leather Work - Saddle Repair. leathercraftmax.com This saddle repair project took two months to complete. A lot of the components had to be replaced in order to bring the saddles back to a usable condition. New stirrups, saddle fenders, flank straps, cinches and catchers. The saddle oil I used really helped recondition the leather bring it back to life. These custom made roping saddles have seen a lot of use in the arena and were just about used up and consider not repairable but I took them in and did my thing to them.
The saddles you see here were made in 1992, 1994 and 1996 and the saddle numbers are 202, 251 and 313.
The saddle trees were made by the late Jim Parry of the Hercules Saddle Tree Company, Moab Utah.
Saddles are maker marked Bruce Cheaney Custom Saddles, Gainesville Texas.

Hi Bruce, you are amazing, a really top job with a lot of patience, and dedication. I just love your work.
I use wool soap and water, to clean the dirt off, then I clean again with wet glycerin soap and a drop of clove oil to clean, and moisturise the leather, and kill stubborn mould.
And then I use only drops citronella oil and tea tree oil, with clove oil, mixed in with neatsfoot oil, to oil my leather keeps the insects away and so far the mould also.
    I will try your method.

@@cheaneysaddles thank you for sharing what you do! I hope to get a shop of my own set up before winter. My daughter and I will be getting into the leather business and working part time at the saddlery has helped me gain confidence in doing saddle repair which I think will be alot of our business. I finally found something that I like doing and just hope it can be sustainable for us.

Beautifully done Bruce! Loved the video! Countless hours and 2 trips the car wash and wallah! Back to perfection. I don’t know what a project like that would run but I bet it wasn’t enough once after seeing the undertaking that took place. They are virtually new saddles.
Your a true craftsman in every way Bruce Cheaney. Rather than see them saddles go on in existence the way they are you took and brought em back to life to get back in that arena to start turning steers on again. Them saddles are part of your Remuda and you didn’t want to see them in that condition and by golly you fixed it!
Hats off to you my friend and you inspire me with your continued love and passion for the trade!
Your the round robin of Cowboy Gear Bruce. Saddles, hacks, bridles, bits, spurs, you name it.
To put it simple; anything leather, anything steel, it’s complete when it comes to you!

What oil did you use on the new leather? I never can get mine to color out like yours has. I like that 2 tone look of the old & new together. Great job there Bruce.
Some of the people on here remarked that it was a shame the way your saddles had been treated. Think of it in a different manner. Look how long they have been rode & abused. About the abuse that they have taken over all those years. That's a real testament of the craftsmanship Bruce put into them when he first built them. Quality from the start. I can promise you there are not many too saddles out there that would have held up to that kind of abuse. Lots of people wonder often complain about cost of a real saddle maker VS. others. This video shows why. The man built them to last & they have. He put his blood, sweat & pride in to each saddle from the start.

Eddie, Pecard harness oil does wonders for old and new saddle skirting leather that's what I used on these saddles. I learned saddle making from my Dad and he had a certain way with making things that he passed down to me and my brothers.
When a saddle leaves the shop you never know how it will be treated it's just the way things go... Thanks for your comment. Bruce

So Bruce… I know they are pushing 30yr old but repairs like this? Is this “use” or “abuse?” Just curious they are amazing even 30 yrs later!

    • @cheaneysaddles
      @cheaneysaddles  Před 2 lety +2

Use and abuse then put in a old damp barn and forgotten for a few years. Then things like mold and black mold start growing on them.

@@cheaneysaddles wow. Well I’m glad they brought them back to you for repair. It breaks my heart, but I do understand forgetting things in the back of the barn from time to time. What a heart breaker after putting so much hard work and energy in to making them years ago, then have some club head bring these back for rebuild. After what looks like no maintenance what so ever has to be heart dissolving just a kick in the soul and zero respect to the craftsman . Even though it is how you make your living still has to be pain full. The worst thing that ever happened to one of my knife sheaths is when a friend brought it over to see if I could save it his dog tried to have it for dinner. I was able to save some of it that's what he wanted just as a reminder to him self not to leave it on the floor next to his chair, the knife handle did not survive . Happy trails

Bruce, I live about 90 minutes from Gainesville. My wife has a late 1980s/early 1990s show saddle made by Broken Horn in Baldwin Park, California she used to show horses when she was a kid. It's been stored in a garage for nearly 30 years. We would like for it to be cleaned up/restored so it can be displayed in our home. How do I get ahold of you?

I kind of new the history of were these saddles had been and who rode them or I would have passed on this job. It took me two months of work to get them shaped up. It is impossible to take in everything that comes into the shop.
