Secrets of Signal Routing and Channel Types in Cubase/Nuendo, Part 1: Mono / Stereo

  • You can't do much of anything in Cubase / Nuendo without routing, so it may seem like too basic a topic to cover. But often for me, when my setup isn't working the way I expected, it turns out to be an issue with routing.
    One point I forgot to make: if you're recording a mono source, but know that you will want stereo effects on the instrument, create a stereo channel and connect it to a mono input. This will record mono recordings on disk but still allow stereo processing.

    Excellent tutorial! It is very rare that people understand these principles in Cubase. You did an excellent job of explaining all of this. Wouldn't have done it better myself.

    Thanks for the vid! There is also a setting for send pan called ‘send pan follows panner’ so it follows the channel pan

    This is apropos for many of my editing and mixing questions that aren’t exactly clear concerning routing mono or stereo tracks when using mono/stereo sends.
    I’ll need to review this several times.
    After that, I’ll have more clarity on mono/stereo concerning the sends when mixed with the original audio track. Many times I’ve questioned why I can’t get the panning results desired because I didn’t have the clarity needed when panning. An orchestra project which is very large needs this clarity when panning while using mono or stereo send affects.
    I gratefully thank you. Now, I’ll watch it again for the 3rd time!

    Thank you so much for sharing this, Sir! It's a valuable tutorial for people who wants to be pro in music production, I believe not many people are covering this important knowledge that may be easily ignored. This mono stereo problem in Cubase has been confusing me for years. You've solved many problems in this video with understandable examples. I believe you are very experienced in this industry. If it is possible, I hope to see a what is the correct record preparation setup workflow in Cubase before recording a vocal or a few instruments, such as setting up the route, how to make sure (monitor) the levels of tracks before recording is correct, and how to set up common plugins (e.g. comp or reverb) in sending FX track or insert before recording.

      Hi Bruce, thanks for the kind words. I'm focusing more on Atmos on this channel, but for basic Cubase tutorials, Dom Sigalas and Chris Selim have outstanding tutorials on Cubase, as does Greg Ondo of Yamaha/Steinberg. Best of luck!

    It seems to me like using a mono configuration is just limited overall. What is the utility of a mono channel if you can actually do the same thing in a stereo channel with more flexibility? For eg. I can set up a stereo configuration but with only 1 input. So when I record through a mic I still get a mono signal coming through both speakers. But I can add a MonoToStereo plugin to that channel if I want a stereo response. So what is the actual benefit of a mono channel?

    • @balladeerstudio
      @balladeerstudio  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, it's good advice to record mono signals on stereo channels if your intention is to produce a stereo mix and you want the most flexibility from the start. Like a lead vocal for example. I probably should have made that clearer.
      Mono channels are sometimes necessary, like when you want to downmix stereo to mono, and especially when mapping mono signals to Dolby Atmos objects.

      @@balladeerstudio Thank you for clarifying. Never thought about downmixing to mono and very good to know about Dolby Atmos though I haven't used it yet.

    With your videos editing, you’ve packed it full with its routing features. I don’t think anybody can stand watching a one hour and 10 minute tutorial four or five times. With what you’ve done in 11 minutes and 30 seconds, after watching it twice already. and if I watch it two more times, I will have absorbed every issue of routing that you’ve covered, in much less time than an hour and 10 minutes of a video with wasted space containing no useful feature knowledge.

    No wonder Steinberg doesn't have any videos on this. It's even more confused and confusing than early versions of Mediabay.
