    Josh is a great young vet, willing to spend the time and such valuable questions asked and answered so clearly. Great little video. Thank you both.

    Hi David, great looking rams and your headlock device works very handy. Castor oil rubbed onto their ears should help with the sores. I really enjoy watching you and the main man Robbie working with your flock. 💯👍

      @@wendyrowland7787 Hi Wendy, I hadn't heard of that mix, I been using castor oil on its own, I'll get some beeswax now and mix them..💯

      @@brianmullan2423 I recently bought this ‘ bee balm’ with a few other ingredients. I am 81 and prefer to call myself weather beaten. (In truth wrinkly). My forearms were very exposure damaged, dry and uncomfortable. My arms are looking and feeling great now. The same balm calms insect bite too. I used to put a mix of vaseline and honey on open wounds on livestock. Worked well on wounds left when a gangrenous udder detached, also dog bite wounds.

    I see you have a new St Bernard puppy! If I were to give advice to new shepherds, it would be to buy your first ewes from a reputable breeder (whether purebred or commercial) and start with a flock of older ewes. Some breeders cull their ewes at 6+ years, because their flocks are too large to cater to the extra feed needs these ewes may have. But a good, healthy ewe of this age has already proven her worth ( a breeder wouldn't have kept her that long if she couldn't raise great lambs with easy lambing). So for a new shepherd's first lambing he/she will have experienced ewes and for the future of their flock they're starting with established good producers. Also start with a maternal breed of ram for ease of lambing.

      Great advice 👌 I had no problem running sheep onto 8 and 9 years when under stocked but 6/7 is my cut off now due to the tough grazing and out wintering bigger numbers...

    Usually punch a hole months before tagging so the ear can heal before the tag is placed. Have had no infection that way

    • @sheepschool365
      @sheepschool365  Před 6 dny

      Great idea. What do you use to punch the hole?

    • @nathanyoung7178
      @nathanyoung7178 Před 5 dny

      We use a bull nose punch to make the hole or put in a cheap management tag when they are young lambs to make a hole if we think there's potential.

    Try using Stockholm / archangel tar on the head & ear sores, it's very good for keeping the flys away & give the sores a chance to heal

      Unfortunately Ireland is so wet and the moisture content of grass is so high sheep do not require much additional drinking water. I'm sure it would work in a drier climate or indoor system?
