Baby Led Weaning - trusting your child

  • No one likes to be forced.
Even for the fun part of life, forcing won't work. Imagine forcing to bungee jump or sky dive when you have a fear of heights.
What about forcing Education, marriage or a career. Forcing leads nowhere.
❓Then why is forcing a child to eat, normalized? Most of us have gone through force feeding as a child or have seen it happen. Why do you think some adults force children to eat?
👉 Adults assume they know more about the child's stomach & appetite than the child themselves.
👉Adults assume the child doesn't have boundaries. Everyone, including a baby has the ability to say No when there is a breach in boundary. Understanding body boundaries is very important to understand consent & to prevent sex abuse.
👉 Adults associate food with love. Food is for hunger. Forcing a child to eat is not a way to love your child. In fact long back, force feeding was a very common punishment in prisons (check image above).
👉 Adults have unrealistic expectations about the quantity a child can take at a certain age & it can lead to force feeding.
👉 If sensory processing issues, chewing issues & other underlying problems affect the child's ability to eat & they go unnoticed or underdiagnosed, adults might force feed. These issues can be identified by a feeding therapist.
🍎There are many more reasons, but in long term a child that's force fed can end up with a very negative relationship with food & can have eating disorders, issues in regulating intake, inability to understand satiety, inability to chew, to control appetite, to understand hunger cues, emotional eating, food aversions, inability to try new food & can even create hatred towards food.
🔥If someone doesn't like sex or any particular element in sex, for example oral sex, forcing them can't be a solution. Just like misconceptions about sexuality can lead to long term issues in adulthood, parents' ideologies & beliefs about food habits can cause problems in adulthood too.
Let's be more mindful with our kids' eating habits. Remember we're not just raising children, but tomorrow's adults too.

Thank you Swati for guiding me to start Baby led weaning through your workshop.I came to know about BLW when I was pregnant,as l have seen many forcing and distracting babies to eat I wanted to try this method .I tried gathering all information about the method , mentally got prepared to follow this but was not sure how to convince my families. So attended your workshop with my husband so that we both will be aware of what we are going to follow and convince our families.Really ur session was so much of fun and knowledge.Today I am a happy mom who enjoys babies meal times .Yes there is mess 😀😀...but it's so good to see your baby eats food by themselves.

Dear Maya, I am Parvathy and I am writing to you from Copenhagen. I recently happened to see your videos. My son , Dhruv is 1 years and 7 months old, and we have been practicing a mix of BLW and conventional weaning. I do conventional feeding with him in the morning breakfast before I go to work and he goes to daycare, but when we are more relaxed in the evenings, I follow BLW. In his daycare too, it is largely BLW, although they help kids at times. So now my son has even started eating with spoon, if we just help him fill it up. He also happily eats with either of his hands. Recently, Dhruv's pedagogues complained that he throws food, and they said it is because he has a bit of developmental delays (he was born prematurely) or it is just bad manners. At home I never took it very seriously before, probably because I looked at him as a child. Of course I said to him no at times, but also thought he should learn and explore. But when Dhruv's pedagogue said it could be a bad manners, I started worrying me a bit. How can I teach him not to throw food. Do kids at this age, eat food with out throwing food? Thank you.

Until I had my child, I believed children do not eat well unless forced. Though I attempted BLW only after my child turned one, it was a real game changer. It made mealtimes so enjoyable for both her and me. The biggest merit of BLW besides encouraging body autonomy and eating as per one's need is that the child develops a positive image about food and becomes open to trying new food. The golden rule during mealtimes is zero pressure. Thank you for the video🙂

I could not find a good video on these topics in malayalam. I want to make my mother in low understand these. If i say directly, i fear it would hurt her feelings.
