  • With the internet littered with misinformation on this topic, here you will find a tried and tested technique, one I teach my students, that will elevate any item made with quality stitching.
    An addition to the 3, 1 hour videos on Saddle Stitching, here we look at stitching multiple layers together using the very same technique.
    Think of it as part 4.

    Only two times have I mismatched the number of holes, but I still remember the frustration. I even left a note to myself on the wall for a couple of weeks: Count! Eventually, I learned that counting is not the answer either. A good method is.
    Thank you for your valuable lessons! I have the feeling of being back in uni, only this time I'm learning something that interests me. I started about two years ago, and I have developed some sort of method for stitching without a pony. Yet, I still get confused when changing orientation. I actually laughed out loud when you mentioned how the two halves of a belt need to be sewn differently, because I just learned that lesson the hard way last week (but don't tell the owner!) With all the solid theory you offer here, now I feel ready to incorporate my new understanding of thread dynamics in my own stitching style. Or, failing that, I will buy a pony knowing what to do with it.
    Thanks again for sharing your wisdom!

    Thank you so much for making these videos available. They are priceless. I'm about to start part 4, Haveing watched the first 3 I have to say that I've learned more in those 3 videos than I've learned in the months I've spent with other youtube videos combined. However, I do need to do a shout out to Mascon Leathers. In one of his videos he mentions that if you want to learn to stitch correctly you need to watch Nigel Armitage. Clearly that was great advice. I wish I'd started leather work years ago. Some people say that there is magic in touching gold. Gold is okay but it doesn't compare to the magic I feel when touching leather. I know that you understand that feeling. You can't do the work you do without feeling that magic.

    Nigel, your are one of a kind. Just pure gold. I have been struggling alone with straight uniform stitch line for months. And just like that, it’s all in the past. Will you be making a tutorial about stitching around corners and curves?

    I recently found that a wine cork glued to a stick handle in my left hand makes my awl piercing straighter. I can pierce the awl through the leather into the cork without any distortion, as if I were pre-piercing the holes over a board.

    Thank you for this. Question, would you use the sane process when gluing the pieces together? Does the use if the awl clear the glue from the holes?

      Have you studied all the 3 previous parts of this series? If not…. you should. With this - Nigel’s - method of stitching you - mostly - have no need of glue 🤗

      @warofwrath Před 5 měsíci

      @michaelehlers1883 thanks that's what I figured, but I am unsure of his edge finishing method, with my process, without glue it would be impossible to make the edges appear as one...I think...I'll have e to try it and see.

    You have mentioned several times in this series how the leatherworker has much less strict rules compared to someone making a saddle, harness, or bridle.
    I would very much like to see a video in this modern series going over the technique that saddlers do use!

    • @warofwrath
      @warofwrath Před 5 měsíci

      He sort of explains it, a saddler uses the sane stitch but they make their holes primarily with an awl, that's the main difference.

    • @samg8822
      @samg8822 Před 4 měsíci +1

      It’s fair to say that although Nigel trained as a saddler he does not work in that medium. He calls himself a leatherworker and has to stress that the techniques he uses are absolutely NOT to be used in the creation of a working seam. There are plenty of saddlers who are willing to share their techniques JH Leather being one of them.

    • @greggorievich
      @greggorievich Před 4 měsíci

      @@samg8822 Super appreciate the response and recommendation!
      I totally understand it's not something Nigel normally does, and I understand that his current technique is not for a working seam. But teaching style matters, getting into the how and why and detail matters, and no one I've seen (so far) quite matches the deep understanding that I get from Nigel. As such, to me, if I wanted to learn how to create a working seam, and exactly why it's made that way and how a working seam contrasts from the leatherwork technique that I have already learned from Nigel, it seems like he's the best to explain it. This video is a 90 minute long "part 4" of a series with hours of other video backing it up. At an admittedly quick glance, JH Leather seems to have a 27 minute video and an older 11 minute video. That does not seem as in depth as I would ordinarily aim for. It might work to add that knowledge to the fundamentals Nigel uses, but my point remains about teaching style.
      As such, I asked about it. Never hurts to ask, right? :)
