The caterpillars tend to come out in the cool of the evening so apply it more in the late afternoon. They'll feed on it overnight

Thanks for that! I sure do love my BT, I couldn’t imagine trying to grow anything in the cabbage family without it! I have never seen Sluggo Plus or equivalent here I will look out for it, my wife always seems to hustle me away from the plant products section, I can spend ages looking at that kind of stuff, she says. By the way thank you for the Japanese beetle video! They started to show up in my garden a few days after you put up the video, I’m using your soapy water method to good affect! Fortunately they seem to favour my grape vine so are easy to find!

BT is the bomb diggity!!! Never knew that's how it worked. I was recommended sluggo in the spring when slugs destroyed some of my plants, I never tried it!

I agree about the pill bugs. I harvested my potatoes, grown Ruth Stout style, and lots were nibbled on from the incredible pill bug population. There was plenty of rotting hay, but they still moved in on my potatoes. So next year, i will consider it.
I also grew bush bean near them and they were inialated by slugs. So... I'll be getting the slugo next season.
I've had "trouble" with corn. Will try your method + hand pollination for our small patch this year. Excited thinking about fresh corn for dinner.

My daughter is now into ducks and we have two. Word around the homesteading community is that they are voracious slug hunters and do not dig up gardens like chickens. I used BT last year on your advice and it really does work!

Earwigs are pretty gross. 😆 You never want to confuse sluggo with sluggo plus.😁 Sounds like a great product Oppe.
I see you're about three years out with this vid Mr. Brewster. For me it's like 5 minutes ago. Ha. Thought I'd pop by and add my two cents. In my garden the evil corn worm has owned my corn for decades. It's unusual to find a perfect ear of non chomped corn. All added up, mebbe 25% of the total gets tossed. And tomatoes.... I had no idea what was putting holes in them. I thought..squirrels? Somebody shooting them with a .22? Feral rabbits? And let us not forget the holey cabbage.
About 40 years ago I tried some powdered BT on my corn. Then you couldn't find it any more. Poof...Vanished for the long years. I couldn't tell much anyway back then. I think I finally tossed that can last year. But then I discovered the SAFER BT over on Amazon about 3 years ago now and thought I'd give it a try. Now ** *I* ** own my corn. It's rare to find a chomped ear....and only a kernel or two at that. Out of 250 beautiful award winning Golden Queen ears last year I think...mebbe 3. I love growing corn. I love eating corn. Love everything about corn...and now I actually get the corn!
When I see the first hint of silk I spray the silk late in the afternoon every day nearly up til harvest. I have been so successful that I believe I even ran the ear worms off my neighbor's corn patch. A bit less successful with tomatoes.... I spray those things with whatever I have left over from the corn....but I really need to start earlier on that. First bullet hole, spray like the dickens. And a bit less successful than that with the cabbage. Earlier spraying this year for that as well. Safer BT has turned my harvest on its ear. Man, that's some wicked great stuff!

Great Great video very informational. My questions my corn plants are about 8 inches in height I have notice some of the bottom leaves are chewed up should I apply the Sluggo Plus?
It sounds like you have pill bugs, earwigs or slugs. In either case the Sluggo Plus will help tremendously. If you want to be sure what the culprit is I would suggest checking the garden after dark using a flashlight. You will surely catch the critters in action.

I have heard a lot about BT. I will have to add it to my Arsenal. It's pretty gruesome how you explain it working. Lol!! But if it works. Sure beats hand picking every night.
I use sluggo plus. It was recommended to me awhile back. It works great.
Sluggo plus is not sold here in Canada because spinosad is found to kill honey bees and other pollinators. Does anyone know a good alternative?

@@loosefish9889 I will try to do a vid on it. You want to look for fat ears, dry brown silks and you can peel a bit of the husk down to inspect the kernals. You can puncture a few kernals and look for milky colored juice as opposed to clear. It takes a little practice but once you figure it out you're good to go!

@@James-kl7ig This is a good question. It's incredibly gentle so it may be a good option. However, I would definitely spot test it before spraying the whole crop. Better safe than sorry.

Oh no they don't sell Sluggo Plus in Canada :( Earwigs are taking a liking to my 2 cornstalks.
Place several small cups with about an inch of olive oil mixed with a dash soy sauce around your garden. Earwigs will be attracted to them and drown.
As a novice gardener, I appreciate some of your good info. One concern at 10:36: "Spinosad," which is the extra ingredient in Sluggo Plus, is toxic to bees and some other insect predators, so I'd likely suggest staying away from Sluggo Plus or from any product with Spinosad because of that.
It is toxic to bees but he did say not to put it where the bees will go, only on the soil and bees don't land in dirt often.
How do you store your leftover pesticides over winter? I have a garden shed, but am always concerned about condensation when temps in the shed go from hot to cold. I'm running out of climate controlled space inside the house.
With the "living" pesticides like BT and Spinosad, I keep them stored in a cool place inside the house. I think leaving them out in the extreme heat or cold would kill or severely diminish the viability of the product. With "non-living" pesticides I leave them outdoors unless they are a liquid and risk freezing. Thanks for asking!
So I'm not the only one! Come fall I have sooooo many things I need to keep from freezing and in summer it's the heat and humidity! We have no basement so it's a constant struggle!

Why would Hose Tools recommend Spinosad for on the ears if it kills pollinators?
This is why we can't get sluggo in Canada. Its because spinosad is banned here because it kills the honey bees
Keep spinosad away from the tassels. The bees are after the pollen in the tassels. At least our bees are. Hope this helps
Hi this is my first yr with corn I was using the BR but I was spraying with need oil&soap noticed trails on my leaves so I sprayed my corn the whole plant including the slik but my silks are separated have I ruined my corn ears
Generally, by this point in the season, your corn should already be pollinated and the seeds should be growing inside the ears. Spraying the silks has never been a problem for me. I think you are good to go.

I have wasps in my corn and I'm allergic to wasps. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them without killing my corn?
Luckily, there are many organics sprays and traps that are effective against wasps and won't harm your corn. However, these products will vary from region to region. I recommend contacting your local garden store or nursery to see what products are available. You can also contact your county extension for horticulture for great free guidance. I do recommend targeting wasps at night while they are more docile. Find a volunteer that is known to NOT be allergic to help you out. There are professional services that will do this for you as well. I hope you get those pesky wasps under control. Good luck and stay safe!
I know neem will get um and safe for all but bugs it will take out ALL bugs though
Is there any reason not to just use diatomaceous earth? It says it will get earwigs and I know it works on slugs.

@@amandaropp1627 That's correct. BT is for preventing corn ear worms. The Sluggo Plus contains Spinosad. I use that to quell infestations of Earwigs and Pill Bugs as well as slugs. It's a knock out combination while remaining organic.

Unfortunately I have been unable to create new videos for the last few years. During our transition between homes is when the C-19 disaster came along. Between that and housing prices skyrocketing we have been unable to secure a suitable place for gardening. I will absolutely continue making more videos when the time is right and we are blessed with a new home and adequate space for more gardening adventures. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long.
