Well done. From the perspective of someone who studies the history of high school English, your classes and pedagogy are an interesting case study of how high school English studies emerged out of late Victorian morality and "character" education (which later became the idea of the "good citizen" a la John Dewey). The messages of each class, arrived at via dialogue and a pseudo-Socratic method, are elevated to something just as important as the actual essays themselves. Essentially, the high school literature canon and English studies replaced the study of religion in school. High school English became a way of reinforcing what emerged out of the the social gospel period of progressive Christianity(eg, social justic), including anti-racism, response to injustice, a skepticism toward capitalism, and anti-materialism.
