How Pilots Lose Their Sense of Direction

- Without gravity we will be lost. Cats will be for sure! But too much gravity can also negatively impact our bodies, and that is something that military pilots experience on a regular basis. But who could handle more G-force? The Spartan (Gerard Butler) or the Wolverine (Hugh Jackman)?

Hey man! Could you make a detailed video on Russian submarine Belgorod (K-329)
not me...
If they wanted a better Sim for the million dollar set up, they should’ve used war thunder lmao
I seen one pilot say the only time you hear your first name called is when you're passed out while flying and he said it throws everyone off because they're like oh my moms calling me I should wake up and then they realize what's going on

@@magnitudefallout3944 are you saying that cuz I had 2 auto correct errors that are now fixed?
@@Chase-jc7rx should i help you with writing it correctly?
@@magnitudefallout3944 has anyone ever responded positively to your over correcting and kind of condescending behavior?
If you want to correct someone's grammar, why not recommend this politely and in a pleasant manner?
@@magnitudefallout3944ave you ever thought about **not** being a scummy cock nozzle. Like my guy it's really not that hard. "r/iHaDaStRoKe" is not a good way to "help" someone, all it does is paint you as an arrogant jackweed.
As a kid, we had a whirligig that was our favorite toy. Four seats, kid powered pumping action. The goal was to keep going until someone flew off. Extra points for distance.
One day we realized the downslope of the yard was greater 'over there', much closer to the bushes and briars. Greater flight time, further roll to stop, easier to stick the landing.
Side benefit, much like the pilot training we learned to cope with the effects of inertia and spinning. But, unlike the pilots, we learned a lot about first aid. 😎
Thank you for your service. Can you imagine what would happen if such a "toy" was bought by some kid's folks? Everyone would go nuts, and parents would be charged with child abuse. I'm 81, and as a kid, I was never bored. Risking life and limb, yes, but never bored. Thanks for sharing your story.
0:10 okay, so fun fact you can, in-fact, pass out pooping. If you're straining & putting stress on the vagus nerve your blood pressure can drop & cause one to lose consciousness - it's called vagaling down. This is why Elvis was found between the toilet & wall in the end.
i can, umm, confirm that... i remember almost passing out, recovered by resuming breathing 😅
@@magnitudefallout3944 🤣 I hate to tell you this, but it was more likely a reduction of pressure on the vagal nerve than an introduction of air that helped. (Not that you can't make yourself pass out by holding your breath, or anything)
oh, i see
@@magnitudefallout3944 yeah, I swear, every semester of school this was beat into our heads at least once. Constipation & straining can be more dangerous than you'd think lol
It happened to me. Granted, I had both gut wrench and nausea, so from the get go not a lot of blood was going to my head.
One moment I was sitting and the other I was laying sideways on the bathroom floor. Luckily didn't hit my head with the tub.
I don't know about constipation, but low pressure and high positive G's create a pathology in the same area : hemorrhoids ...
That coriolis effect happened to me while driving on the freeway twice .... I thought the road went 45° to the right vertically . I just thought this cant be real and held the wheel straight . That was the scariest thing ever .
Coriolis? 45 degrees vertically? Tell us what are you on cause it's pretty efficient!🤣
I know what you mean, i've had this happen to me while in the back of our minivan. It's wild to experience, but i wasn't the one driving so there was not really any risk involved luckily :)
I'm glad you kept your cool and didn't try to take off.
And many are affected by the Alcoholis effect. Often that’s their doom.

That spinning chair followed by the head turn is the anti thesis to the Epley maneouvre used to treat benign positional vertigo. The nystagmus is a classic sign of a BPV episode. I.e. you're actually inducing something akin to BPV by doing this. I've had a couple of attacks of BPV and it is awful. When I get an attack of BPV I get my wife to look into my eyes and tell me if they're shaking around, then I do the Eply on myself to calm the BPV. I missed out a Christmas from a particularly nasty episode
What an excellent essay! Thoroughly enjoyable, taught me a lot. Great!
1:57 That’s a great way of putting it!
NWYT videos are really enjoyable and fun to watch. I can't quite put my finger on why, though. It doesnt seem to be about the specific topics; there are plenty of other CZcamsrs covering the same topics. Theres just something about the narration; I don't know exactly what; but it makes me feel genuinely interested in whatever is being talked about
Thanks, we’re happy to hear that 😊👍🏼
I think his narration voice is like great branding for the channel
3:04 wow this guy is LEGEND
GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS!! THANKS!!!!!
I got to ride in the back seat once and the thing that amazed me was the pilot's ability to multitask while pulling high Gs. I couldn't pry my head away from the seat but the dude up front is bobbing all over the place, executing a spiral approach, working the sniper pod and pickling the simulated target. all at around 6 Gs. it was wild.
The Barany Chair reminds me of when I spin around in an office chair at my school’s computer room a couple dozen times before standing up and (try to) walk in a straight line
Safe to say that I got nauseated a couple of days after that
How can you not click with a title like that
Very interesting video, keep it up man!
As a fighter pilot I can say that pulling 9gs is no frikken joke and most people completely underestimate the power of high g environments! It is UTTERLY oppressive. But you get used to it and your body learns to do these things automatically. But still...9g will never be a walk in the park!
My ass gets dizzy from standing up too quickly.
Much respect for what you do! I couldn't even imagine what it would feel like to pull that many G!
Fellow fighter pilot here. I always thought it was crazy you can pull 6-7 G's and smoke a lucky all day, but when it hits 8-9 G's it's fking struggling to survive.

OUTSTANDING video
"you know what cant oreient themselves? pussies" that line somehow reminded me to take my pills in the morning while watching this until after that, he wasnt joking...
F-16 pilot here who has been through all of this training. Although the video is mostly correct, there are several significant in accuracies:
1) The altitude chamber IS NOT for recognizing hypoxia effects due to G's. It is to recognize hypoxia due to loss of cabin pressure, especially a slow decompression vs. a rapid one. Every pilot experiences different effects due to hypoxic (altitude related) hypoxia. G-LOC (G-induced loss of consciousness) is extremely rapid and the only warning signs are typically narrowing field of vision. Fellow pilots I know that have G-LOC'ed have had it occur in under 2 seconds or less
2) The Barany Chair is used almost exclusively to overcome airsickness. Many UPT trainee pilots get airsick and using the chair forces the trainee to get so sick so often, that their body just gives up eventually and they get used to the "sick in your stomach" feeling. Crazy enough it actually works really well, but it has nothing to do with interpreting sustained turns.
3) Pilots actually don't move their head under heavy G because: A) it is extremely difficult to do so and, B) you can cause damage to muscles, tendons and ligaments moving your head under G. It has absolutely nothing due to with becoming disoriented. This is true because your vision is your strongest input and can overcome the disorienting effects of sustained turns under heavy G, which we only do in clear weather during BFM (dog fighting). Commonly known as "The Leans" is a condition while in IMC (aka while in the weather with no visible cues) which can cause a pilot to misinterpret the position of the aircraft. This is why it is reiterated ad-nauseum in instrument training to TRUST THE INSTRUMENTS and not your body.
4) The AGCAS section is 100% correct. We have a saying that "the biggest killers of fighter pilots are themselves". 2-3 times a year the AGCAS system has saved the lives of friends I know personally.
Overall a great video, I just wanted to clear up some of the information from an actual fighter pilot's perspective.
Great work!
Well for that theres a terrain avoidance system in F 16 which automatically pulls the nose up when the aircraft is about to hit the ground
Yeah he mentioned that in the video maybe not for that specific plane but that was referenced at the end of the video
"It's not what you think."
It's not what I thought, ever.
The titles of this video keep changing faster than a centrifuge spins
And the first one was the best one🖐✊
Holy shit this video was awesome.
Spatial disorientation. The scariest thing about flying a plane/helicopter.
Awesome!!!!
The hypobaric chamber/ROBD is not used to train G-Tolerance or recognize the signs of G-LOC or A-LOC. It's used to teach reaction to Hypoxia/loss of cabin pressurization. Two separate phenomena with separate symptom sets.
He definitly had me with 'cats'.
The title is why I love you
I feel bad for the guy whos so badass he handles enough G's for us to find out at what G force do eyeballs fly out of their sockets lol
Perfect!!!
Thanks
Love it 😊😮❤
masterpiece
So, Leonidas is a Member of the 9G Club. Very Cool 👍👍
I died laughing when he said “who can’t orient themselves in space? PUSSIES!” 😂
I grey out sometimes when I stand up. I must be pulling lots of G's.
Today I learned that Full Send is apparently a nation and Eli Beeding Jr is its King.
finally you put cat in the title now i'm intrested
Its exactly what i was thinking
I can't stress enough how many times i watched those cats and pigeons in zero G 😊😍
POV you notice you are trying to breathe less when watching this video
Magical last words ... Lol
My kid ass purposefully putting myself through the coriolis effect playing on spinny chairs for fun
i almost passed out but got out of it and it was because pain
i started to see all black and white and like tunel vision was getting smaller and white sparkles allover the place
until all sight effects faded away .... the pain was still there
5:59 Hypobaric chamber. Hyperbaric chambers have atmospheric pressures that exceed those found at sea level, such as in diving chambers or autoclaves.
Good on that great couple ..too many people are quick to judge kids, hate bullies too. If only more teens wiuld reach out for help instead of giving uo,❤
I watched this while constipating
When you are constipating on the toilet and then pass out from exhaustion 0:15
FYI a hyperbaric chamber is used to increase pressure on the occupants which would increase partial pressure of oxygen in the blood and the oxygen supply to the body in the brain. These are commonly used in deep-sea submerging activities and treatment for diving injuries. A high-altitude chamber, or hypobaric chamber, is used for high altitude low pressure simulation and training and results in low partial pressure of oxygen in the blood and substantially reduced oxygenation of the body and brain, these are used for training and testing and evaluation of pilots and aircraft personnel Xtreme altitude mountain climbers, etc. These were first widely used for these purposes by the US army Air corps in projects that were designed and overseen by famous army Air corps researcher and extreme mountain climber Charles Houston. There are documentaries and written materials about Charles Houston and his research and climbing activities. Check out his book brotherhood of the rope
Came to the comments looking for this comment, in response to NYWT using the wrong word @6:00 . "Hypo-" means "under" or "less" or "reduced", with "hyper" being the opposite. It's like "hypothermia", which is reduced temperature (i.e. core body temp gets too cold) vs "hyperthermia" (overheating). So as keithb says: Hyperbaric chambers are high pressure (for training divers, and also for some questionable medical uses), and hypobaric chambers are low pressure (for testing high-altitude experiences, or as in this case, oxygen deprivation).
But, as always when I post a correction, I gotta be clear I'm not hatin'. NWYT, your content is so damn good (and errors so minor and so rare), which is why I keep coming back and coming back.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, modern passenger jets don't have fuel tanks.
The plane only uses fuel to take off..
It uses Resonance to fly..
Forced Air flowing into the Turbine engines turns the turbine blades, which compresses the air into thrust..
Only propeller planes, helicopters and afterburner military jets need constant fuel.
They say a Boeing 747 carries
63,500 gallons of fuel..
..where do
they put it?
Dose the goat reply
Yup!
Yesssss
mbekkkkkkkk
This is why I couldn't ever fly like this. My inner ear hates me.. Lol
5:37 every War thunder pilot from 10-12.00 when they see a missile
‘’Pussies’’ 💀
Ahahaha💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Wow
Did you do some filming at wright Patterson afb
That also means the different depth layers of gravity would have different effects with different water spreads
Oh, just watching this video is enough to make me dizzy😲
Why? Because they don't feel safe from me. Not even in the sky. 😏😏😏
I like the first video title better, "Unconscious Pilots, Cats & Constipation" . Should have kept it.
Can always change back 😉
At 8:00 you mean “attitude" not "altitude".
Yes! I was going to say this too.
Attitude is the pitch and roll angle of the plane, although I suppose a bad attitude could lead to a bad altitude.
Antoine Daniel's, What the cut title 😂
Thrustmaster WARTHOG throttle spotted!
The pilots became constipated after the cats got stuck “up there” leading them to fall unconscious.

yeah it really is hard to tell that he is in a centrifuge

Worst thing about altitude chamber is the smell. Everyone empties their bowels because of the loss of atmospheric pressure. I went to the chamber at Beale and Mather

During no-gravity, how can you say the pigeon is flying upside down?
He's flying exactly how he's flying. There is no up or down.
Anyone going to talk about how many times the name of this video got changed
Sorry to be pedantic, but at 7:50 you say altitude (twice) but the correct word is attitude.
1:20 was so funny 😂 the kitty hit the ceiling
why does the title and thumbnail keep changing on this one? I've gotten so confused and deja vu over it
there is no toilet onboard
9:30 nice code:
var dir = 1
if (dir != 1)
dir = 1
Hehe good catch! I guess in case someone later added some code in between!
Hi
You changed the thumbnail and title for this video for the third time😂
they realy need to update their Microsoft flight simulator
how many times are you going to change the title
4:33 she can't even do one. That's your military.
How many times are you going to change the title/thumbnail of this video?
Damn my g tolerance must be shit because i loose my vision during roller coasters.
OMG IM GETTING SICK JUST WATCHING THIS EPISODE...NO LIE😢
Ok ok... So your job today is to play with cats... In Space! That has to be the best day ever. Assuming you have gloves.
