@@CrankyBarista Well to me the psychology here isn't nuanced at all, specifically regarding the line "I can leave right? I looked at all of them..." that you commented on. They even kicked it up a notch because this is comedy writing, and subtlety can be foregone altogether for bigger comedic effects, especially with characters like Roy. In a drama or real life, even some idiot like Roy would know how to lie better about his interest in Pam's arts, and not say something obviously stupid like this. It works in this context because it makes the dialogue much more funny, followed by the "Your art was the prettiest art of all the art". Albeit they are not as "grand" as the big jokes, but that's not the same thing as subtlety at all, it IS very obvious that this was irony (and help signify how sad and insulting it was to Pam). Also, being condescending doesn't help make you more credible so maybe learn to drop it?

I find interesting that Pam, although emotionally devastated, greets Michael with scorn, almost as she was thinking “ow, God, not him…” She was hoping for Prince Charming (Jim) or some friend, but all she got was her annoying boss. But it was him the only one who understood how much passion she had for her work as an artist, just like he had for his work as a paper salesman. Him saying “I’m proud of you” is something that he’d want someone to tell him, but never happened. I believe that this is the first moment in which Pam allows herself to see beyond Michael buffoonery and truly appreciate his qualities.

She already expects him to be inappropriate and stupid, which is why his genuine response especially threw her off. This is my favorite scene in my favorite episode of The Office. Even though the clip makes the viewer's eyes well up for Pam's sake, it is important to remember what Michael had been subjected to that day, before still making time to see Pam's exhibit. His entire existence had been shattered by Ryan humiliating him and the paper industry in front of an entire classroom full of business students. Add to that the fact that Ryan's statements were 100 percent true - that the world was moving fast toward a paperless society - the incident did something that many would have thought impossible. It crushed Michael's spirit. Remember that outside of his awkward lack of social skills, and his need for an office family, all Michael has is Dunder Mifflin and paper.

This scene works on so many levels. Michael has just had his whole reason for being in business questioned at Ryan's school, so him saying “that is our building, where we sell paper” is a chance for him to reaffirm himself. It's unexpectedly moving, because we always expect Jim to be the one to be Pam's knight in shining armor riding to her emotional rescue. Who would have expected Michael, who usually just thinks of himself, being the one to be there for her when she needs someone? And then, Michael is always trying to inspire his workers with these big bombastic speeches. Here, he finally succeeds in inspiring someone, just by saying the simple words “I am really proud of you.” Moves me every time.

Scenes like this are what made The Office a masterpiece. This has real human emotion and drama, without any need for violence or over the top situations. I mean every scene brings home something profound about the characters or the moment in their lives they are living through. Roy going to the art show just to say he went and claim being a good boyfriend, and Pam realizing he doesn't care about her passions. Oscar and his boyfriend are kinda dicks, but they aren't wrong and brutally inform Pam about a flaw in herself and her dream of being an artist. And then after Pam has taken an emotional beating (one I think she actually did need a little), Michael swoops in to restore her hope in herself, and not with some big inspiring speech or whatever, but by just really looking at her art and finding the small spots where Pam was brave enough to actually put her heart into her painting. And the cherry on the cake? Other than her own car, she only adds Michaels car, because he is such a big part of what makes DM so special to her. A+++++ scene

this scene made me cry. it’s just so heartwarming he just walked in and loved it. he cares so much about the work of his coworkers” friends “ he is what makes this show good.

Just listened to the office ladies podcast minutes ago where Jenna just shared that she fought during the episode of mafia to cut the scene where this painting is ruined. What a great save Jenna.

If that painting got destroyed, I would have never watched The Office again. Gotta love the creative freedom the show’s producers gave to the cast.

The writers and actors did an amazing job on this beautiful heart string tugging piece and switched it up so quickly with the still yet heart warming comedy. One of my favourites bits in the show👍💗

This is one of the first moments that I really loved Michael. He's quirkiness and eccentric personality is just an added bonus to his kind-hearted nature. 😍

Started to watch this show for the first time and watched this episode today. The amount of time I keep on coming back to this scene… the whole episode was great in terms of Michael’s character and showing his good side. Best episode so far
