  • Finally here the long awaited Q&A, Questions and Answers video! This was our third attempt at it! The first two attempts had faulty audio where the mic's malfunctioned and we only found out after recording them!
    A lot of the questions were not relevant anymore as time progressed since they were originally asked. A lot of them were also duplicates that others were asking so we condensed it down into this episode. If I have missed anything please do ask again for the next Q&A episode.

    The viper (Vipera latastei) kill only one person in the last 20 years and was a 70 year old men that he think was bitten by a wasp (or other type of insect) and dont go to hospital after the bitten, he dont see the snake bite him (he tell his daughter he was bitten when he step a few brambles in the leg and was think was a wasp, they confirmed he was bitten by the only poisoned snake in Portugal by the autopsy, they call the emergency was almost 48 hours the bitten and was to late.
    I think one boy from England (in vacation) with 11 years old was bitten in 2018 and almost die because they only go to hospital very late, but he was in intensive care and manage to survive.
    The news in a TVI channel of Portugal. tvi24.iol.pt/sociedade/vibora-cornuda/menino-mordido-por-cobra-esta-estavel-e-a-evoluir-favoravelmente (use the google translate)
    This snake (Portuguese name is call Víbora cornuda and cientific name vipera latastei) have only 70 cm max and they run away from humans, they only bite if you step on them or you reach very very close, if they see you first they run away from you. They dont want to use their precious venom in humans, because they need him to hunt rats. The only way to hunt rats because the rat is to smart and fast for this snake is manage to bite him and follow the rat using their "warm body sense" and catch the rat after sometimes they need to pursue the rat more than 50 metros when the poison affect the rat and he's very more slow and ending sleeping.
    PS: If you choose to live in Portugal, this advice if you are bitten and dont see what bitten you, the best is search a local health center. If they see the bite and think is fro that viper, they call the ambulance and sent you to a emergency hospital.

    About a lot of the questions asked, If you go live in another country you should integrate not create or join expat communities. This is anyway what the English themselves keep saying to those who move there! To learn the language should be the first priority.

    • @OKportugal

      Yes I agree. We are learning new words every day and we do speak with our neighbours and people from the village and its getting easier everyday 😊

      Celestino, I rather enjoy this space for what it's... let's not 'contaminate' with that rethoric about how people should live THEIR lives, including which language to speak- that's personal. If you agree with the English (and some perspective, I've lived in Britain for 15 years and I've never been told that, yet I know it happens) it's a shame but that's also your right, however if you don't agree with them then don't do the same. I'm saying this not to 'pick a fight' with you, in fact I understand your feeling, but I think it's best to avoid that type of vibe! :)

      @@j.j.2831 JO, visiting the countrry as a tourist is not the same as emigrate to that country. Sorry but you completely misunderstood what I meant. I was referring to some of the questions that have been asked not about the couple that runs this channel which attitude towards the country they live in now I completely support. It is known around the world that the British tend to live in bubbles of what they have back home. What's the point of moving then? And furthermore that wasn't definitely the spirit that led to the creation of the EU. The EU is or should be a large community of people willing to share and understand each other cultures not only a market place to serve particular interests or impose any culture or point of view to others Do you know what I mean now? No wonder the recent events developed as they did. This said I wish them and you, BTW, all the best.

      @@celestinosaraiva107 I think I sort of understood you well 1st time, but totally the 2ª time around. Of course that we were not talking about tourists!
      What the EU is for, or why and how people move around the world, is for me, for individuals to decide. Moving abroad to work is a very different mind set and set of needs (inc. communication) than moving for lifestyle.
      Well we could go on for ever...but I happy to have had this exchange with you :)

      I'm starting to see all the expat ghettos in a new light. Your average English speaking neighbour tends to be a lot more toxic than the average Portuguese townie so it's actually nice to have them somewhat contained.

    Great Video Ken. Absolutely loved comments about privacy and not wanting to share the area with every Tom, Dick & Harry. Your videos promote the area and all that is good in life in Portugal. Who wouldnt want to live there. You are getting too good. I think that having an odd neighbour or two from a different country is fine, but expat groups are not a good idea. I think the locals in the small villages enjoy a foreigner or two. Especially if they go out their way to integrate and learn the language and try to use it.
    We were treated with hospitality, kindness and a lot of humour as we stumbled along with our limited Portuguese at the village hostalry. But we were made to feel really welcome.Stay safe.Look forward to your next vid. Steve Pick

    Lived in pedrogao off grid sold it freezing in winter left in 2018 sold it last year. You definitely need basics electric/shower etc buying a cheap off grid property costs too much to be liveable often more than the property. Buy a habitable property. I bought mine in 2015 sold it last year no regrets. The driving back and forwards from uk cost a fortune even on ferry to Spain 7 hours to portugal.

    • @OKportugal
      @OKportugal  Před 3 lety +1

      It does get cold in the winter and this year was the coldest it's been in 10 years. When we first moved into our farmhouse, we had no heating, insulation or double glazing and it was miserable. This winter has been much more comfortable as we spend 3.5k on insulated, double glazed windows and doors and installed a woodburner. Even on a cold night we can get the living room up to 27c with the fire 🔥 😁❤️
      We have winter sorted, just need to find a way of cooling it off in thd hot summer now 😁

      @ivansheppard1520 Před 3 lety

      Have you put in loft insulation sheep's wool excellent for it. Also seal round your log burner hardboard with aluminium foil attached reflects heat stops heat going up the chimney. I learnt s lot living off grid in freezing conditions January till March any one wanting to move there do it in winter, March 2018 it rained non stop day an night for 4 weeks. No solar lights had candles gas lamp. I was going get electric connected you have to build brick shed and it was 3000 just up to shed from there connected to house another 2500. Adding it all up wasn't worth it so sold it. You need electric running water 5000 euros for decent solar system and if you work out mains electric 500 a year it will take 10 years to pay back.

    Hi. New subscriber here.
    16:30 Portuguese winters bring about quite a lot of slugs. Ducks are a must-have if you want to grow your own broccoli because the other non-chemical alternative is to pick them with a lantern at night. Chicken are quite faster and will be fine as long as they roost in separate enclosures. There really isn't a point in owning male ducks, though.

    Great program, thanks for taking the time and most of all, thanks for being sincere, honest and upfront. Thanks for working hard and anticipating more hard work to come. As time progresses, you will get some additional tools to work your land and as that takes place, please be wise to not push your neighbors away, their knowledge of the land and it’s inhabitants is priceless and working in harmony is very beneficial, but be wise and friendly, in Portugal, the word gets around quickly.
    Real wise to not open your house or land to uninvited people but being a “rock star” comes with a price that you are finding out about.
    There are some folks on CZcams that clearly tell you how they arrived in Portugal with nothing, knew no one and how they are doing all kinds of things. They are not shy to tell the watcher how they knew nothing about Portugal, its people, their traditions, their history nor their language and they brag about it, and the worst part is that they are actually attracting weak people that are looking for attention and no sooner the contacts are made, they begin to have an audience that grows on flawed information that is solely beneficial to the invader for lack of better description as they begin to make money on the numbers. In addition, these same shameless people begin to give advise on how to open bank accounts, what documents to file with the Portuguese government, how to look for ways to circumvent the system , next thing you know, other folks begin to get involved and offer their own short cuts to do things without following proper protocol. Those are the same invaders that arrived in my country ready to take advantage of anyone they can in order to survive, such demeanor makes us wonder why they left their own lands as they are arriving in my country with lots of luggage but making believe how they care, the truth is that they knew nothing about my people to care enough but begin to bore like termites. I despise those people and wish the Portuguese government had better laws to throw those people out.
    You, on the other hand, you have been sincere and up front and not selling a bag of goods. You have worked hard, you have made friends with your neighbors and you have shown how hard work is making things well. You love your animals and you actually show your love for the land and region. Your discoveries have been adventurous and your words actually express your appreciation for the local nature.
    You and Gina are icons that at times appear like you have been in Portugal for ever because you are acclimating so easily and accept the environment as well as the local people.
    Bottom like, thank you for taking what you are being given and making it grow. By maintaining this demeanor, you will quickly be an integral part of that community as the people will appreciate you.
    Thank you for using your real names and not some fictitious fruit or spice names to identify yourselves, it is good to have real names with real people.
    Thank you for treating my country and my people with so much respect and appreciation....

      When you had your bad experience with the people that sold you the sick puppy, we were heart broken. Being ripped off and have a gorgeous puppy die sucks, pretty much like mean people.....your story became our story, a shameful event. Although we were not present, it felt like we had been cheated with you, so yes, be wise, don’t open your land or house to strangers.......pretty much like we teach our children “stranger danger”....take care, don’t mean to burn your hears but we wish you a continuous and successful journey.

      Yeah unfortunately after Brexit, English passport holders can only stay "90 days out of each 180" in Portugal.
      The 700 Euro per month rule is if you wanted to emigrate to Portugal on a "D7 visa". Basically you can get a Visa to live here if you have external income or a pension that gives you 7300 euros in a year. The visa lasts for 12 months and you have to show proof of your income before they give it to you.
      After 5 years you can apply for citizenship and get a passport. :)

The reason I didn't do it then was I didn't want to change my uk licence as I still had to make money pay rent etc in uk. A friend who lives in penamacor got fined a 100 euros for not changing his uk licence to Portuguese one as you can only drive for 3 months. He changed it but lost his entitlement to a HGV 1 Licence which he had in uk. Price of cars in portugal crazy also if you driving your uk car more than 3 months you have to matriculate it.

      If you are from outside the EU and want to get residency in Portugal after Brexit then you have a couple of options. Golden Visa, Startup Visa or D7 visa.
      There might be some others I'm unaware of, like student visas or if you are a highly qualified person from a sought after profession who wants to live and work here.
      You can drive a foreign car in Portugal for 6 months after which you need to import it or take it out the country.

    Hi there! Chickens are not as expensive of you grow part of their feed (grains) and if you replace the meat/fish a few meals a week with eggs. When it comes to yoir vegetable garden I don't see why it's more expensive to grow them. Do you have to buy manure for them? Anyway, wish you the best! :)

      @OKportugal  Před 3 lety

      Thank you Rita. We are complete novices so at this point in time we have been buying compost and we haven't planted in stages so we get everything ready at once and then have to buy the rest from the shops. I'm sure as we get more experience (and home grown compost) it will balance out. This is the hope and expectation anyway 😁👍❤️

    • @scatteredseedsofhappiness3285
      @scatteredseedsofhappiness3285 Před 3 lety +1

      @@OKportugal it can get expensive to buy everything you need to feed the soil. Because your chickens are free range you don't have their manure either. Rabbit manure is very good and they produce a surprinsingly large amount for their size so keeping a couple rabbits would be a good idea as you have almost everything you need for them at the farm. Comfrey or nettle tea is also a great fertilizer. Morag Gamble here on youtube speaks about permaculture and just by implementing some of her ideas we had great results on our garden this year. Charles Dowding is a great one too. I love permaculture and the no till method because we are quite busy but still got a great harvest, no need to pull weeds etc. We are learning too. I have found that the more we put into the soil, the more we get from the plants. Have a great day!

      @@OKportugal Morag Gamble lives in Australia. I live in Central Europe at the moment but I used to live in Portugal and all my family lives there and has grown successful gardens for generations. They don't use permaculture methods, they do till and weed and leave the soil exposed but I imagine that the only thing that would change would be the length of the growing season. Covering the soil with one layer of cardboard or 3 to 4 of wet newspaper (like Morag does) and then putting hay/straw on top keeps the soil more moist and prevents (for the most part) that weeds grow and stunt the growth of plants. I will send you a link to one of Morag's videos.

      Here's the link. In this video she is showing how she prepares the soil. The principles aply to all soils. It's about feeding the soil and not the plant, keeping the soil covered to prevent erosion etc. These principles helped me realise I didn't have a lot of top soil so we have been focusing on building that top soil and feeding the soil. We had the most amazing results this year, all organic. When we start digging into this it's not complicated, it makes a lot of sense and it brings new life back to the soil.
