    So, if you live in Europe, I can recommend very much "Centenaire " . It's a good paper from Gerstaecker, Germany. A pad, 30x40 cm, 300 gram with 20 sheets costs about 35 Euro.

    I was tickled to see "Watercolor - You Can Do It!" in your excellent video. I bought that when Tony taught the first workshop I attended in 2001, along with "Tony Couch's Keys to Successful Painting". He wrote "remember the values" in each and signed them.He did a full sheet demo each morning for us. At 94, he is still teaching.

    Thank you for your encouragement. Just finished 3 days of hideously unsuccessful attempts at a landscape style I adore and just not getting it even one little bit. This video has given me a couple of ideas about things to try. I'm an old Aussie very far and long away from home. Watching and listening to and learning from your videos (and looking at your simply glorious, gorgeous paintings) keeps me trying with "magical" albeit awfully frustrating watercolour.

    Wonderful video as usual❤. I started with wood pulp paper. I knew if I spent too much on paper I would be too intimidated to even start. Now I love cotton! I use the pulp variety for studies and stress relief and sheets of practice. I don't worry about sketching lines, color corrections, or writing notes to myself. Who knew that different brands of white show different whites? I love how playful you are during outtakes. If you were a neighbor I'd invite you to tea. Thank you for being you ❤❤❤

    I have been practicing watercolour for about 2 years and have just bought my first Arches paper. Up until now (in Australia) I have been using A3 300gsm block Leyton paper from THE ARTIST PAPER CLUB. It is a 100% cotton, it holds the water beautifully and very affordable in both cold and hot press . I will continue to use this paper and keep the Arches for special paintings.
    Thank you for your tips I have learnt so much and your way of explaining is easy to understand and very helpful. Cheers !!

    • @charliefoxtrot6017
      @charliefoxtrot6017 Před 11 měsíci

      Also in Australia but had to look up Leyton as haven’t come across it before. Sadly another Chinese product attempting to hide its origins with a western name. Consciously trying to make ethical choices when buying art supplies so definitely no Russian products and, where there are alternatives, no Chinese products. Consequently, I’d no longer suggest W&N Cotman paints for beginners. I’m now buying Roman Szmal, Rósa Gallery and Daniel Smith paints and non Chinese cotton papers.

  • @colleenmcchesney1482
    @colleenmcchesney1482 Před 11 měsíci +10

    Thanks for sharing this wonderful information. I am definitely finding out that I don’t need to be using the pulp papers anymore for painting after trying the 100% cotton papers. I am now using Hahnemuhle (German Made) 100% cotton watercolor paper in 140 lb/ 300 gsm that is fairly inexpensive. I also love the Strathmore (USA Made) 500 series 100% cotton papers. I have just recently upgraded my brushes too. Definitely finding that I need to check on not over working my paintings & just let the watercolor do it’s thing. Thanks for all the helpful advice!

The Road of water colour painting successfully is long and painful sometimes, but so rewarding too. Pain Will become gain eventually. And LOUISE is perfectly able to guide you on that road and to paint and gain real soon.

    1) I'm in Europe and I find that Fabriano artistico 100% paper is 1/3 cheaper than arches or canson heritage (my fav). It's best to buy a full sheet, you can buy them individually in good art stores and online :) and also Fabriano comes in four textures! They have rough, cold pressed, soft pressed and hot pressed. I like the soft pressed one for mixed media!

    • @loati94
      @loati94 Před 11 měsíci

      In Spain it depends. Fabriano sheets are twice the price of Arches. But then when it comes to full glued blocs fabriano is way cheaper than arches. But if you want a regular 12 sheet bloc Arches is half the price. It's weird lol

    • @Mmmmagu
      @Mmmmagu Před 11 měsíci

      @@loati94 Oh, that's interesting! In Poland Fabriano is cheaper in every form, but the most economical solution is always buying loose full sheets (50x70cm). Last time I checked a sheet of Fabriano was 24pln, which is around 5euro :D

    • @loati94
      @loati94 Před 11 měsíci

    • @Mmmmagu
      @Mmmmagu Před 11 měsíci

    I remember you saying that you've had trouble removing sheets from blocks. The only blocks I've ever had trouble with are from Bao Hong: the edges seemed to be gummed the same way you'd glue pages into a paperback book - so gummy & thick. The easiest I've experienced is Saunders Waterford.
    LOL - the thing that holds me back most is having time to practice! I need to put chores & errands aside & sit down with my paints! Thanks Louise!

I am in South Australia and find there are very few brands of 100% cotton paper locally that won't break the bank, however I really like the Art Spectrum 100% cotton cold pressed pads. Light and shadows must go. I got this habit of sketching 4 different pictures in one subject. Then I stick them all on the wall. In front of my breakfast table.look at for days and do the correction. Before I decide to paint. I enjoy more sketching than painting.

    What I do is this. With one model. I sketch 4 different angle of pictures. That makes my drawings more interesting. Then I decide which one i like to paint. I believe that with the better drawings. You get the better painting.

    Dear Louise - I just recently found you! I love how you teach. You mentioned a book on composition - I would like to find it. Could let me know the name again. I think your teaching is just the best. You are an incredible artist. You are also absolutely charming! Love the outtakes.

      Thank you very much Margritz 💕. I've put links to the books in the description of the video. If you click on 'more' underneath the video, the description will expand and you'll see them listed there. The book I have by Frank Webb is out of print but he has another one that I have listed there. The Tony Couch book is still available.

    Everyone is different but for me, cheap watercolor paper was invaluable bc I had no idea how to even use a paintbrush. Once I had a better handle on brush control I switched. I would not have felt good filling up expensive pages with simple brush strokes.

      Yes true, thanks Missy. I think the problem with wood pulp paper is that it's not easy to paint on it with watercolour and beginners start using it, find it's too difficult and then they give up having never tried cotton paper- which is a shame. 💕

    I've been loving your videos and you. I'm a beginner in the world of art so I really appreciate your advice. I'm actually starting my journey with digital art. I'm using infinite Painter on my Samsung tab with stylus. Have you ever dabbled with digital art? I'm hoping it's am okay medium for a beginner :) ❤️

      Thank you David. I dabbled in digital art when I did my fine art course. I had one class a week where they taught me how to use Photoshop and all of the brushes. You can do some amazing things with it.

    I’ve been using Fabriano “soft” press for a few years. I noticed you’ve used it in a few tutorials. How did you like the soft press? Will you do some more tutorials using it?
    Also, I’m REALLY enjoying your landscape tutorials!

      I love their soft press paper. I like it more than their cold press paper. I find the paint lifts too easily on the cold press but I haven't noticed that on the soft press yet. I may do more tutorials using it but I'm not sure if it's easy to get hold of around the world. I know of only one place I can buy it in Australia. Thanks Melissa.

      Also, only professional quality paint! Never student grade. You pay less, and use3 times as much with student grade paint , so it actually costs more. It doesnt mix the same colors as it should, either

    I like watercolours because of few artists ..you being top in them...why? I am mad about your wet on wet style technique. Nobody uses this as you do.however your technique is difficult to use in a cityscapes like busy street with figures in between buildings..i wish you could show one painting in your technique in cityscapes. Im aware its not your genre...but its a wishful thinking 😊. Thanks again for the inspiration 🙏
