    Keeping figures inside the boxes is ridiculous, I think they should be displayed even if they are expensive. BTW I love your collection.

    • @myne5689
      @myne5689 Před 3 lety +95

      It honestly makes figures sticky and is better to just take them out and keep good care of them. Besides, figures hardly lose value when you take them out of the box. The box remains a b generally just from being opened and as long as you keep the figure above b condition if it has a high aftermarket value it's going to sell well. This isn't like western figures, there is literally no reason to keep your figure sealed.

      To me, it shows a lack of love, caring more about the value of the figure than the figure itself. If you can't see and enjoy the glory of the figures, why bother?
      The only figure I'd ever consider putting into boxes are those that are replaced by strictly better ones. Say the bootleg-ish ones I bought in my poorer days or figure that are damaged and replaced(I'd never throw them away, mind you, but... if something happen to a figure I am buying another copy and display that instead)

    my unpopular opinion: i feel so sad when people talk down on nendoroids :(
    i’ve heard people call the “fancy pop dolls” far too often. i think they’re so cute & fun. i’m a big slice of life girl and having nendoroids of my absolute favorites just adds a bit more to that cute, innocent, “they’re so adorable i wanna squeeze them” feeling.

    People who complain about support rods will always confuse me :/ Like, I know a lot of fine engineering goes into making highly detailed figurines in dynamic poses, but that doesn't mean they can change the laws of physics.

    • @myne5689
      @myne5689 Před 3 lety +29

      For me it depends. I dislike when they're metal and are a lot of them, such as that princess connect figure of Pecorine I nearly bought. I also don't like when they're in the front. The aqua bikini figure is a good example of one I don't mind. The support only holds up her hair, it's clear, and you can position it away from your view. I find they sorta take away from the figure a bit and look a little tacky. It almost reminds me of scaffolding on an unfinished building or something. It just looks like it's not supposed to be there, which makes the figure feel less alive. There are also ways around the rods. Say someone's holding a big staff, you could add a little flame or water underneath it. This makes the figure look immersive, polished, whereas the rods look a bit cheap and unfinished. Of course, doing it this way will result in a more expensive figure. One good thing about the rods is they don't raise the value of the figure like effects do. I don't personally mind paying more for a more refined figure though, such as the estream ones. It's not that I hate rods in all cases, but sometimes I do avoid figures with them for these reasons.

    • @ryandukes4947
      @ryandukes4947 Před 3 lety +13

      I agree I don’t mind them too much AS LONG AS they don’t detract from the figure the Jean d’arc Alta figure from a few years ago is a great example of this the flag is huge and goes behind the figure and can be easily hidden away behind it and clear poles are a great way to solve some of these issues

    • @Written_in_the_Starss
      @Written_in_the_Starss Před 3 lety +3

      Support rods are fine but its a different story when the support rode is a bit taking too much attention.

    • @justanoman6497
      @justanoman6497 Před 3 lety +4

      This is a bit complicated. I'm not 100% against it, I have two figures that have them.
      But at the same time, I feel it should be minimized and only when it is absolutely necessary.
      The minimization need to be 1. clear and 2. strategic placement to be as hidden from view as possible.
      As for the necessity, well, both of mine are "floating" so there is no getting away from it. Dynamic pose (that's not jumping and thus not in "mid air"), on the other hand, might not actually *require* it.
      I have a LOT of figure that are on a single leg, none of them have support rod. Now, I didn't really pick them specifically one way or another, but it does goes to show that it isn't always needed. This is a result of a few design and production choices. First, material, some material are more sturdy than others and in some cases, I think a metal insert might be the way to go(now, due to thermal properties, there would be a lot of design and production difficulty with mixed materials, but it probably can and is done). Then there is design. Sufficiently good material will mean that it's not really an issue with supporting the weight, that's the easy part. The difficult part to maintain is when the center of gravity is not on top of the support, thus creating torque and will potentially cause the figure to lean over time. This can be counter acted via design by creating some sort of counterweight. It can be anything really, floating dress, a giant weapon, whatever. But the idea is you want the center of gravity as close to on top of the point of support as possible to minimize torque.
      Now, I haven't actually been consciously avoiding support rods. But I suspect that the reason I have a lack of them is at least in part due to buying mostly higher quality scales which probably took the above into consideration and avoid support rods when possible. Now, there would probably be time when it becomes unavoidable, but it would be fewer. I suspect that support rod might be more prolific in lower end figures as they take the easy solution because they kind of have to.

    • @genefactor007
      @genefactor007 Před 3 lety +2

      I see it from both sides actually. In some cases they are simply needed for the stabilization of the figure. Some are needed for extra support and prevent leaning over time. So yeah, for figures with certain poses they are a much needed addition. However they can be an eyesore especially the ones that are something of a proximity piece to the figure. Not only does it eat up display real estate but for those who do notice it, they are very noticeable. I can forgive support stands that are part of the base but those proximity support stands, not a fan. I get their value but I just don't like them. All in all if there's a really cool figure out there that has a few variations, the one with the support rod would be my last choice every time. But hey, that's just me. :)

    my unpopular opinion: I wish we got more male figures for shows like Re: Zero, Darling in the Franxx, and Konosuba. There is a singular Subaru scale and he is with Rem, and a single pretty bad scale Kazuma. I think a Hiro groom outfit would go great with Zero Two's wedding dress but I doubt we'll ever get it. I literally block out my only window in the basement to keep all the sunlight out. Keeping figures in the box is actually worse I think because they can get sticky, and opening the box hardly decreases the value of figures since it's so easy to repackage an anime figure. You just have to keep the box and it will basically be a B condition, which is fine. What's best is to keep them in glass, as dustproof as possible, in a cool environment, away from sunlight, and to clean them delicately and properly. I first began collecting anime figures in 1995 at a convention in Atlanta. I found figures of characters from anime that I liked and brought them home. So my first and only real rule is that I will only collect figures that are connected to my favorite anime and meet my artistic standards. So I began with "Motoko Aoyama" from Love Hina and "Lina Inverse" from Slayers. I have continued over the years being very selective and only recently pre-ordered the two furisode figures from Yuru Camp and the Nadeshko "I can see it:Mt Fujj figure. . These were my only pre-orders for the year.
    One thing that I enjoy, is the enthusiasm of other figure collectors. They may not have the same tastes that I have, but they are fun to meet at conventions and to connect with on-line. People who are super-opinionated are boring, but true figure collectors are "enthusiastic" about their collections and tolerant of other's tastes. BTW I do not collect "bunny figures". They almost never appear in their anime in those costumes: except Haruhi Suzumia". LOL!

      Saber is kind of the "face" of fate franchise, there is a saber face in I think every Fate. I believe it's heavily influenced by the creator of the franchise. And while I like Rin more, Saber is a good character.
      Both bunny and scantly clad figure are kind of the same thing. IMO, it heavily depends on the character. For example, the Sabers I got are in her full battle dress. Same with actually the majority of my figures, most are properly dressed(though some are in anime armor so there is still a fair deal of skin).
      However, I also have some scantly clad where the character "works". Kurumi, for example, is very sensual. While I have her in her spirit dress, I also have her in lingerie.
      Then there is my Horo figure, which I can honestly say is of the artistic nude variety. It fits her character, it feels right. And honestly, I didn't pick it because she's nude, it was the only one where the face didn't look derpy. I was looking at the one with a basket first but... the face....
      And finally, there is my nekopara figures. It's nekopara.... If you know what it is, you know how it *should* be. Mine are dressed as they should, in the "recommended" configuration if you will.
      So I'd say I'm kind of a "moderate" on the subject. I dislike over-sexualization of a "serious" character but at the same time, full stop hate of them is also excessive IMO.

    Loved to talk to you on Reddit regarding the Yumeko bunny! Really good video.
    One of my unpopular opinions would be that a lot of the collectors in the anime figure community hate on funko pops too much. Who cares what others collect to such a length? Yes, they are far from the same quality as most anime figures, but Funko provide a lot to choose from for a good price. I don’t collect them anymore as I focus on scale figures nowadays, but I can see the appeal for people with a limited budget.
    Another unpopular opinion would be that the figure community, especially Reddit, talk down on the shop Nin-Nin-Game too much. They have amazing prices, different shipping options, pack well, and ship preorders very fast (faster than most other shops I have tried, if not the fastest). I have only used them for preorders, but I have heard people mainly have a problem with their in stock items and costumer service, but I have had good experiences with their customer service at least.

      The problem with Figma, as many people have stated, are the joints. They look ugly af. Now, when the joints are hidden by cloth, it's totally fine, but those are far and rare in between. The other compromise is swappable parts for different poses, that's also totally fine but obviously means you only have a finite number of poses.
      Beyond that... honestly if I want multiple pose, I'd just have to pray for multiple figure releases.
      Honestly, if they ever figure out a new flexible material that allows posing without degrading overtime, I'd totally go for that. But until then, the ability to custom pose just aren't worth the cost of joint eyesore--I'm not gonna pose my figures everyday, but I am going to look at them everyday.
      P.S. joints are totally fine when the character are mechanical in nature, be it robot or power armor. But... that's a rarity in anime/games, more so for females because female anime/game armor designs. I have a Reinhardt with joints and it looks fine. As far as female char goes... I reckon plate armor joints like 675895 is probably the best they are gonna get. That one... I can stand.

    I see so many posts bragging that the person in question dropped 2k on a figure or something and that's cool, but the flex should be the figure, not how much the figure cost. Especially nowadays, where we're starting to see incredibly high quality figures drop for way less than they would have ten years ago.

Assuming heads are loose on these models, I could almost imagine you could buy 5 of them and then mix and match and get 25 different figures out of it. Which I guess would be an odd plus compared to collecting normal figures.

    I think the industry is still way too swayed in the direction of female figures. Though the climate has changed (and improved) a LOT since I started collecting in 2010, the ratio is still deeply uneven. Male characters don't get made into figures nearly enough. And when they do, the quality usually isn't as good as their female counterparts. I think there's still a misunderstanding the market of figure buyers is male predominant, an attitude that needs to change.

    I agree that anyone should be able to display/neglect any figure they have purchased, HOWEVER, saying heat and sunlight isn't going to be that big a deal is a big disservice to anyone who hasn't seen their collection age more than a few years. I wish I had taken better care of my older figures. Figures bent at awkward angles because of years of a combination of 'not extreme but still present' heat and gravity. Figures with irreversible uneven discoloration because of a sunny window that brightened up their presentation when I put them on the shelf 10 years ago.

    Unpopular opinion: I think prize figures/Ichiban Kuji figures (Banpresto, Good Smile Popup Parade, Taito, Bandai Spirits, etc.) are better than scale figures. There's a few reasons behind this: 1) They are smaller and don't take up as much space. This goes for the figure and the box. This allows me to collect more of the franchises I love, fit more figures in my displays, and take up less storage space to house their respective boxes. 2) Environmental factors. Because these figures are smaller and less intricate, they use FAR less plastic. Unfortunately the end life for a majority of our figures is going to be landfills. As much as we hope that the people close to us will take our figures when we die, the majority will be thrown out with only some select figures being passed on. 3) There's less fluff. Don't get me wrong, an intricate base and effects around the character can be nice, but often times the massive amounts of effects surrounding the character take away from the character itself. Plus, again, it's a huge waste of plastic. 4) They honestly look just as good from the distance you'd normally view them from. Sure, if you get close, like within inches, you might see some imperfections (although I have quite a few prize figures without any imperfections at all), but from a normal viewing distance of a few feet they look awesome! Many of them are even in very cool poses with a lot of motion to them. 5) Price. They are obviously quite a bit less expensive with prices ranging from $15 - $60 on average while scale figures tend to range from $120 - $300 on average. This makes the hobby quite a bit more friendly on the wallet and on people who might otherwise not be able to afford this hobby.
