    I held United 1K status for 3 years (and Premier Exec a few years before that), averaging 100-130 flight segments booked on them annually. After several unimpressive experiences with service, and a very negative Denver “union rep” gate agent interaction, I asked Delta if they would status match. Delta did, and I have never booked another flight with UA since. It’s been about 15 years and your experience confirms for me that I still made the right decision.

      @davidkim1906 Před rokem +3

      Wow, I didn’t know other airlines match your tier status from their competitions. That’s good to know, but is it a rare case? Or is it an unspoken kinda thing?

      Definitely agreed even if I didn't fly as frequently as you did. I once had to pick a United code share returning flight LHR to LAX as Lufthansa flights didn't have the time to my need, and it was a most terrible experience I'd ever had with ANY airlines' business class cabins.

    • @cynterslave
      @cynterslave Před rokem

      @@davidkim1906 I’m not sure how I got the number to call, but Delta had me print out a years worth of flight history from my UA account, and mail it to them for verification. It was like 20 pages! About 3 weeks later I received an email confirming the status match and a physical card came in the mail. I just googled “ delta status match” and they appear to offer a program that provides 3 months status match, and that extends if you meet some additional “challenge” requirements during that period.

    I have been lucky to fly Polaris several times longhaul from SFO to LHR . I miss the days of pre pandemic Polaris service it was wonderful. I also have been on flights where the cabin crew just disappeared after meal service and did not reappear till the pre landing meal-granted I can understand with most of the passengers sleeping but they should still have at least one crew member checking occassionally. I hope you let United know about this experience. I am flying Polaris in November from LHR to SMF and am looking forward to it.

    Thankyou for this great vlog and information. I flew Air Canadas 787 in economy and I also hated it, that the crew locked the window tint for a good part of the flight; that is why I prefer the traditional manually operated blinds; there should be an over-ride option. Last May my wife booked ANA business class flights from Saigon to Newark and back which included code share UA Polaris for the Narita-Newark segments. She said the ANA operated flights were fine with very good food and super polite service. But she was taken aback by the mediocre service and food on the UA sections. She said the food in economy class on EVA is better than the so called business class on Polaris.

    I would also write your feedback to United. It’s very bad service for what you paid for and expectations were. And I know they want to work hard on improving.
    I would be fuming if my windows were blocked and if I were told off by a crew just for asking to unblock the windows. I pay for a window seat to watch and film the outside.
    What surprises me more is that the catering is from Japan. I have never had a bad Japanese catering as they just do everything great. How weird the quality was that low!

    Several years ago, I flew International First from EWR to CDG on a Continental B767. It was by far, the best flight experience of my life. We had 4 dedicated flight attendants for our cabin. The service and food was like being in a 5 star hotel dining room. Champagne in flutes, pre dinner cocktails, warm nuts. Appetizer trays. Fine Linen. Salad, warm bread. Delicious main course. Dessert trays of cakes. Sundae bar cart with whatever toppings you desired. Trays of cookies, squares and cheese plates. Cappuccino or Espresso from the on-board machine. Brandy / cognac served in snifters. It was unbelievably decadent. I was so spoiled that I could have cared less about landing in Paris.
    Sadly, your video experience is now what we get in a post Covid, less competitive world. Ive noticed UAL seems to be putting more perks into their Polaris lounges and offsetting those with reduced in-flight benefits. I think they’re wanting their Polaris passengers to gorge on eating and drinking before the flight hoping that everyone will pass out and sleep it off once airborne to simplify the in-flight efforts and cost.

    I feel your pain bro. You're so right, for passengers who spend thousands on this type of seat, United does a shi**y job in justifying the price. If it wasn't for the cabotage law, I would easily spend the thousands elsewhere on a premium seat on a foreign carrier such as ANA or JAL on a NRT-USA rouye. When this flight was under Continental, the service and food was top notch, FAs were kind, courteous, friendly, helpful, they handed out menu cards and they placed linens over your tray, meals came in different phases and there was an ice cream sundae trolley with cheese and fruit offerings. They would even squat down to eye level to take your orders. It's so sad how United ran their service to the ground. The premium seats are useless with grumpy overweight and old FAs and shi**y food, it just does not justify the cost. United, along with other US airlines still has not learned from their foreign competitors, so sad. FAs don't even check the lavatories regularly to keep it tidy. So shameful for United.

    • @bsd107
      @bsd107 Před rokem +3

      What is tragic is that when United launched its Polaris class approximately 5 years ago, they really did finally focus on the service. Everything you mention was there. The pre-flight sparkling wine was upgraded to actual champagne which was served on a tiny tray and came with a little box with two chocolate truffles. The drink service even had a wine tasting “flight” (3 different wines) as an option, and the glasses came in a custom holder.. The meal was multi-course and actually really good food, with different options depending on your city pair (and with a printed menu, of course). Afterwards was a full dessert tray with make your own sundae’s as an option, other desserts, wine and cheese and sherry, etc. And during descent you received another little box with two chocolate truffles. Choice of pillows to sleep, including a mattress pad as an options (most of this is still available). The idea was not just to upgrade the seats with the new Polaris “cubicles” (my terminology) but to also really up the quality of service. It actually worked for a couple of years.
      The wine tasting flight disappeared after about a year or so, but the rest of it stuck…..
      ….until Covid hit. Basically, covid killed the service completely. They degraded to “coach-class”-like meal service, in the pretend spirit of reducing the exposure of crew to the passengers. This excuse has stuck to this day, and we still have the shitty cabin and food service. Crews have basically retrained themselves to avoid passengers, rush the service, and provide crappy meals shrinkwrapped on a single tray. (Again, the food itself isn’t the crew’s fault.)
      IT is too bad, as I still run into one or two cabin staff who are diligent and really try, but even they can’t overcome the overall absence of any focus on quality food and cabin service on United.

    My last transpacific flight in UA Polaris, I had one good flight staffer who strongly encourage me to wear the pajamas, and I like them so much I sleep in them every night in my own bed at home, and one bad flight staffer who used up all my overhead bin space for her own luggage and refused to help me find space for my own luggage, and I didn't know until I was disembarking and took a last look back and saw her surreptitiously grabbing her own luggage from the overhead bin at my assigned seat pod. It will be a long time before I fly UA transpacific, again. I also had to figure out the technology buttons on converting my seat to a bed and back. No staff was in sight to help. Next time, ANA, for sure. ANA helped with my seat/bed technology buttons conversion, explained the menu options, and did not use up my overhead bin space for my heavy laptop bag.

    Its a big shame that United has not improved since the merger with Continental (LOVED the old CONTI), it is now all "window dressing" to make you think it has been improved, the flight attendants are lazy, snippety, are always scarce, talk loud in the front galley areas (in which can be overheard), whom the hell do they think they are? Meanwhile at United's hubs in USA, are meant to shaft you out of $70 for a mediocre lunch at one of the restaurants/bars that have stools that are screwed to the floor...whom the hell likes flying anymore? Back in the day when Pan Am ruled the skies, flight attendants were perfect and the meals were home style delicious!

The beagle remembered me the next time I did that route so I got fussed at again. Never had a remarkable flight on United. Have even gotten better service out of China Eastern. China Eastern's lotus root salad is outstanding! I was booked to Kathmandu when the big earthquake happened. I called China Eastern and they offered several other destinations at no additional cost. Most definitely LAX based crew. There used to be crew bases in NRT, TPE, SIN, BKK, as well as CDG, and LHR. As I recall, the SIN and BKK crews were not union represented, therefore it was easy for management to close those 2 bases, and the other bases were closed through union negotiations - maybe someone knows precise history, as I don’t recall everything.
      If United were to re-open these bases, and only use foreign nationals, maybe the service from these U.S. based crews would improve - but probably not.

    This is unfortunate but it's expected of UA. Love the dreamliner itself. Although every crew is different 8/10 UA crews do disappear during long haul flights...as a FA myself it annoys me as well. For multiple reasons were supposed to do cabin checks frequently. On AA I've experienced crews disappear on 10hr flights as well. The food on UA is the worst of the big 3. I've flown UA over 10x this year and 9/10 times it was disappointing especially internationally. I hope they get it together. I'm biased towards delta having the best food and crews over a consecutive period. But international carriers just do a much better job. Thanks for sharing

    It’s a US flag carrier. What do you expect? They’re going to be shitty through and through, and their super senior, highly union-protected flight attendants will run behind the excuse of, “well, all those foreign carriers are government subsidized - that’s why they can give better service”. US flight attendants stay far longer than they should for two reasons - their employer provided health insurance, and their meagre pensions. So they stay, and stay, and stay.

    This is one reason I avoid United like the plague, because no matter how good the hard product, the catering is mediocre and the cabin crew behavior is rude and entitled. The normal advance purchase fare for LAX - NRT R/T in Polaris is close to $10,000 USD so such behavior is inexcusable. I would not stand for being lectured after requesting they unlock your window dimmer. I would file an employee administrative complaint as soon as I was back on the ground. I quit flying UAL years ago, I can't remember the last time one of their employees actually smiled or asked if I needed anything. Legacy airline "service" is one reason I fly my own plane on business travel whenever possible.

    Remember when studying post-grad management years ago that US customer service was deemed the benchmark. The erosion of past standards was clearly evident to me within a couple of hours spent in shops in Chicago CBD and a terrible flight from LA to Sydney on Continental. It is shocking to see the diminishing quality in Business class. There is no class in the US anymore, just business and that exists not for the proclaimed customer of the past but for the shareholders of today.

      9/11 was the end of any focus on service on US airlines. The next decade was spent with cabin crew having the attitude of, “I am here for your safety - don’t ask me for drink, food, or any other service”

      Sadly you are so right about service in general in the U.S. On my last visit after a gap of a few years I immediately noticed the decline in so many instances. While some places were great others were about the worst you could imagine. This was in total contrast to my very first time way back in the 1970’s when I remember service was amazing just about everywhere.

      Yup, one of the worst features of US airlines. Union seniority means that the most seasoned crews get to pick these premier routes, and get to serve the premium cabins. I have experienced the same many times, where it really does seem like the crew is literally hiding from having to serve anyone.
      The food itself has been terrible for 3 years now. It started with COVID as an excuse, and now there is simply no excuse.
      It is too bad as there still some really good crews, but you encounter all of the worst ones on the best routes in the premium cabins.
