    Greetings from Cabot Arkansas again. I'm a diesel truck mechanic. We are awaiting parts in our industry as well. I feel for you. The bad part is, folk bring you a bike to fix and they miss some rides. Folk bring me a truck, and that is the tool they use to make a living. It's difficult to meet peoples expectations when there are parts on national backorder, and the truck will absolutely not run without them. So I feel your pain. Love the content and am learning much from the amount of detail you put into your videos. Thanks and keep the camera rolling!

      Same here. I started making money as a mechanic when I was 12 yrs old. In Nov 2019 I found an old Soviet Union military sidecar motorcycle in a barn where it had sat 27 years. I wish I had taken the time to video the take down of the engine. Whoever built it didn't care at all. All the piston ring gaps were perfectly lined up, the right head was loose, all the valves leaked because they were never lapped, and there was a broken drill bit left in the oil passage between the oil pump and crankshaft oil galley where oil enters the crankshaft oil passage and other passages for the crankshaft and cam bearings. I ended up taking the entire motorcycle apart and putting it back together. That bike was worth the effort. It's the most fun motorcycle I've ever owned in my 54 years of riding motorcycles.

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  Před 3 lety

      youre welcome. You are not alone at all. Focus on a well built, long lasting engine...it will make more power than stock by far. Good rule of thumb and a general statement...torque is safe for engines....but the further you get from 1hp per cubic inch, depending on how far you go, there can be a diminishing return in the power vs. reliabity. this is why we custom tailor our builds for each individual. very, very few are the same or repeated.

    This is going to be really cool. I love Harley but, why can’t they produce a engine that has better tolerances? I understand that in manufacturing that you aren’t going to get the results that a custom engine builder can but, what the heck is going on up there in Milwaukee???? Great stuff as usual Kevin. 👍

    • @sean8470
      @sean8470 Před 3 lety

      They engineer their bikes to have issues it is a guaranteed rev stream for harley which is why there so many used Harleys out there past owners were tired of always having issues

    I found your channel a few weeks ago and have been watching many a video. Love the info and your work is amazing. I've a Lowrider ST on order. It comes with the 117. Sounds like I won't see my bike until late this year which isn't a big deal, but what that means is I have a winter coming. Winter is a good time to do major bike projects.
    It seems to me that nearly everything you do has some machine work. That's a bit beyond my abilities. I was curious, do you have a preferred "bullet proof" formula that does not include machine work? I'm talking taking the stock motor, replacing the weak or failure prone items and just end up with a robust and reliable engine/drivetrain that will likely last that 100,000 or more miles on little more than regular care. Thanks

    Hey @Kevin Baxter, your teardown vids have given me the incentive needed to tear down a TC88 myself (that I purchased) to see what shape it's in as a possible replacement for my 04 FLHRS TC88 w/ 106,000miles. Not sure what I'll build it back up to (maybe a 98ci). Will need guidance and parts.
    Current: TC88, 106k miles, both cylinders @ 140, haven't done a leak down test, doesn't burn oil yet, plugs good / slightly rich.
    Purchased a used TC88 w/ 20k miles (Fallen Cycles) for teardown, rebuild, swap w/current motor, then tear current down, rebuild, and ???.
    How about this. I come to Winder for a few days+, we do vids of an amateur w/ experience tearing down and rebuilding his motor under guidance? That'd be a 1st.

    Hey Kevin. At what rpm and gears would you say luggs the m8 107" engine?! Some say never run the engine below 3k rpm. Sounds really extreme to me. The manual has its "optimal" gear shift points way below 3k rpm. Somewhere near 2000rpm I reckon. What's your say on this? I believe Cruising at my stage 2 with 157NM peak torque at 2850rpm says it all. I have plenty od muscles already at 2300rpm. Cruising around 2000rpm should be fine, shouldn't it?
