I disagree. Her spins are NOT a hot mess. She has great technical components and awesome spirals. And her presentation is just outstanding. With more height she puts into her jumps she will be completely untouchable. Ultimately so, it is a huge step forward for Julia and like Sasha, she will learn quite fast.
Nicholai Morozov chose the music for Julia last season, plus both pieces are Russian. So there is no surprise about Julia not knowing who Sasha C. was.

"Jumps are tiny, junior"--- cause she's 14! She has plenty of time to grow her jumps out for the Olympics. at 14 she is able to hold her own against girls who are several years older than her; give her 2 years time till the Olympics and she will be tough competition for gold (she already is, IMO)
Yulia is an amazing skater, don't get me wrong. But besides jumps, extraordinary spins and some positions showing her flexibility there is nothing special about this programm. The choreography isn't memorable at all, shes just throwing her arms somewhere, doing some spread eagles, and thats all. She has a great attitude on the ice, but she could do soo much better with a little help from an experienced chreographer
far from her being her idol, in a recent interview she says she had never seen Cohen skate until recently and having watched her doesn't see them as similar skaters at all
i love her consistancy but she REALLY has to become more mature in her style... right now she's just too juvenile. I hope she goes through puberty well and becomes amazing!
All but one judge gave her combo spin +3 (lvl 4) and all but 2 gave her layback +3 (lvl 3). PCS seemed right, her ice coverage and power still aren't the very best.
I am sure Yulia knows who Sasha is. Athletes in every sport have a knowledge of who/what has come before in their sport. Do you think she is knowledgable of who Baiul, Kwan, or Slutskaya are? If she knows who Slutskaya is, then the girl knows who Sasha Cohen is. I wish her all the best these next few years, so many skaters are unable to survive the growth spurt Yulia is approaching.
yes, her 2011-2012 program's music were dark eyes and romeo and juliet, both were sasha's 2005-2006 program's music. and sasha had performed this music too. but i think she should not copied everything from sasha ,she should choose her own music that suit her.
She did use some of the same music as Sasha (dark eyes, nutcracker, r and j) , but in her defense didn't she also have the same choreographer? Morozov? I think the choreographer may just recycle the programs for his clients. For 2013 Julia has a new choreographer and new programs that do not duplicate Sasha's music. Aside from that you can see her potential for greatness here! Go Julia!

you do realize this are overused music used in many programs Cohen wasn't even the first to use them, she has her own style quite different to Sasha Cohen, Julia imo is tougher technically and is tough as nails in competition.
Her spins aren't anything near a hot mess. And, unlike Cohen, she doesn't need to google "edges" to know what those are :P And we aren't even comparing their jumping abilities here (which would be pointless as Cohen's jumping technique was, weel, a hot mess).
She's 14 years old in this video and Sasha's prime competitive years ended in 2006 when Julia was 7/8 years old, how much do you remember from that age? And it's the Nutcracker that is one of the most used musicals for figure skaters, so the "same music" doesn't indicate that she's copying Sasha Cohen.
Amazing, but needs more than flexibility to win her GPs. I hope she stays slim even after puberty because she's the perfect shape for jumping and spinning. Still, I expect her to give Wagner a run for her money at TEB.

terrible double axels a la Lipinski and she's doing two! Jumps are tiny, junior. I really wish she'd jump longer and higher. She lacks power and flair but of course she's a great skater (so consistent, and everything looks so easy to her). Her flexibility is amazing (we need to find a new name for her Bielmann spin !), all the spins are great exc. the layback (very poor free leg position). So, I'm not conquered, I much prefer other amazing Russian skaters but she totally deserves her wins.
She is a fantastic skater!! Unfortunately, she doesn't have the "classic" lines to do a ballet like Nutcracker justice. And those double axels are the worst of any Senior skater on the grand prix. She's lucky she's talented enough to land axels that have awful technique.
It does seem pretty unlikely that an elite skater would be unfamiliar with a former elite skater who was on the medal stand at major international events, Worlds and the Olympics just 6 years ago when she was like 8 or 9. Even people who only pay casual attention to skating are familiar with those who medal at the Olympics. It has nothing to do with where Sasha is from. And by the way, she shows more flexibility than Sasha, but lacks the strength to support it, and her spins are a hot mess.

I don't agree. She has potential but she is unpolished and lacks musicality.
