  • Notcast 164 : U2's "Achtung Baby" had its 30th birthday this week, and that means time for a second reissue, this time with no new bonus tracks, but new packaging and design, and only on vinyl. Today I discuss the psychology of box set packaging, the concepts of "Mental Accounting", "Irrational Value Assessments", "Decision Anchoring", demographic information on a bands fanbase, and the human ability to remember no more than about 12 numbers. What is it like to be the Indiana Jones, opening hefty and ancient artefacts which feel like raiding The Lost Ark Of Rock? Find out (ish) here. 25 November 2021.

Great video Mark - best thing I've watched/listened to for a while - very interesting and informative. Thanks 🌞

I try to just take these things as they come - is the "new" Achtung Baby vinyl worth loads... Well the only reason it would be is that I don't already own it. And I much prefer the new cover art. On the other hand, the 20th anniversary box set (vinyl or CD, thankfully) for All That You Can't Leave Behind was an absolute must - the book by Anton Corbijn was worth the price of admission alone.

Thanks for continuing to make videos with interesting content Mark - keep it up. I fell down the rabbit hole of collecting box sets in the world of gaming. Until i realised what i enjoyed was playing the games and being part of a community that talked about them. Same with music. I can see the appeal of nicely packaged boxsets but also find it somewhat hollow. I've sold off much of my box set collection now and try to seek enjoyment in the art rather than the product.

Enjoyed the video as usual. I bought the same 20th anniversary edition as yourself and really enjoyed it and yes 15 year old me would have been blown away by it. Haven't bothered with the 30th, it looked very disappointing to me.

For me I was just wanting Achtung on vinyl. Almost impossible to find a copy so happy to pick this up.
In Australia I got a copy for 60 bucks. That isn't too much more than any general 2lp release.
Going by discogs it's value has doubled already.
The vinyl market is mental at the minute.

AB last 3 tracks push it over the line as a great album as opposed to excellent

A 1991 S Class Mercedes cost 65, 000 pounds to buy then , but took 2 billion dollars to develop. Similar argument here.

It's a great album. I don't like their recent work, but I thought the Acthung/ Zooropa period was where their experiments and their solid songwriting came together best. Interesting explanations of the entire box set idea - I don't own any and I'd never thought much about the nature of the product and owning it.

From part of a Feb.1992 letter to the editor (B.C. Christian News, aka Christian Info News, Langley, B.C., Canada):
    Re: Achtung Baby album
Your readers might appreciate corrections to the review writer's underestimation of the overt Christian content in the album's lyrics. Dave Langille could only find U2 "spending their time in the book of Job." When he listens again he will hear: in their song 'Mysterious Ways,' which everybody seems to have as Number One everywhere, U2 ramming the 2nd Chapter of Acts down worldly throats; on 'Till the End of the World' an exquisite presentation of the Gospel account of The Betrayal, where a plain recitation of the biblical account is at the same time a modern believer’s realization that he, like all of us, has played Judas: "In the Garden I was playing the tart… I kissed your lips and broke your heart."
And then, at the most glorious of Christian moments: "In waves of regret, waves of joy… I reached out for the One I tried to destroy."
Perhaps the best lyric is from ‘Mysterious Ways' -- sung, you recall, on every dance floor in the world this past month -- and is the triumphant Christian epitaph of the sixties Man-Is-Wonderful-Drugs-Will-Set-Us-Free ethos. Jimi Hendrix, bless him, wrote the exemplary lyric of the psychedelic age, ‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky.’ To which absolutely no one else but Bono could reply: "If you want to kiss the sky… Better learn how to kneel. On your knees, boy!"

Interesting. Virtually all the extras that come in a box set are useless. You can't use the beer mats or put the posters up. You can't read the books as they get greasy. Everything just lives in a box on a shelf. The pleasure comes from knowing you have it, not actually using any of it; much like all the stuff I keep in the loft.

I have the album on the original cd, never owned it on vinyl, was thinking of treating myself to the black vinyl 30th anniversary version, would you say its worth it?

It's the best it's ever sounded on vinyl. A lovely, nice remaster overseen by The Edge.

    Stat attack.
AB sold somewhere between 17 and 18 million copies worldwide (8 to 9 million in America). Zoo TV total attendance was 5.3 million.

I was a bit worried I might have come across as the nit picky pub bore! Apologies if so!
I'm with you on 90s U2 being their most interesting period as a band. For a band that big to take such huge risks with their fanbase is something that gets overlooked by their detractors. I also share your preference for 90s REM to the stuff they did in the 80s. Heresy to their core fan base. Also, thanks for introducing me to The Twilight Sad!
I think you do fantastic work. Your passion really comes across. Keep it up!

By the way the 30th anniversary vinyl master is the same as the 2018 master, so nothing new to hear!

Thanks for that. I already have the original, the Uber, and the 2018 version, so you've just saved me £44.00 for basically the same sound with different packaging.

Here's a good example of cheap, rushed design : fake tape, pictures and text at angles and not centred correctly etc to look slightly dangerous - www.discogs.com/master/26984-Metallica-Garage-Inc

    Here's a YouGov demographic page on U2 : yougov.co.uk/topics/entertainment/explore/music_artist/U2
Bands themselves have much more detailed information about their fanbase.
