- The UK's Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96 at her Balmoral residence in Scotland.
"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon," Buckingham Palace announced at 6:30 p.m. local time in the UK.
Britain's longest-serving monarch was taken ill earlier on Thursday, having canceled an appointment with the Privy Council on Wednesday.
Her family members that were not already present in Balmoral rushed to the scene.
Buckingham Palace's statement said that her heir, Prince Charles, now King Charles III, and his wife Camilla, the queen consort, would remain at Balmoral and would return to London in the morning.

Scotland was her home in her heart, the place where she went to rest, ponder the issues and celebrate her family gatherings. That crack about the Queen failing to show sympathy when Diana died is a load of c@@p. She was comforting her two grand children who had just lost their mother. It was unreasonable to expect the Queen to leave the boys and travel from Scotland so soon after the death, we may have wanted her, but it was a family tragedy first.
I never quite understood the so called ‘outrage’, absolutely agree, her beloved grandsons had just lost their mum. End of, her role was to comfort, console and protect.
I still cannot quite understand the events of that week other than the ‘outrage’ was all stirred up by the tabloid press to a point where I felt that HM and her family were bullied into travelling to London, bullied into giving that television address. I don’t think we had any right to intrude.
And tragic and sad as Diana’s death was, the outpouring of what I describe as pseudo-grief remains one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever witnessed.
Not only a witness to history, but directly responsible for shaping it. An unfathomable loss. Rest In Peace Queen Elizabeth. My condolences to the people of The U.K. And your loss. The whole world will miss The Queen.

I think it’s extremely bittersweet when people who have been together for decades pass so close together. It’s sad they’re gone, but it’s sweet that they’re together. They literally can’t live without each other.

We should also feel sad for Queen Margrethe of Denmark. She is the Queen's second cousin several times over., In a TV Tribute, broadcast on ITV to the Queen at the time of her Platinum Jubilee , Queen Margrethe described the Queen as her greatest friend , as well as her cousin. Margrethe said that they talked regularly about affairs of State in their respective countries, but also about family members efc. She obviously felt closer to Elizabeth , than to her male cousins, King Haarald of Norway and King Gustav of Sweden.

I agree and also disagree. Obviously, she was not stable enough to overcome her grief over losing her husband last year.
She could have easily lived another 10 years (an aunt of ours lived to 109), had the death of Philip not broken her heart and thus made
her very frail within a few months of his death.

This sounds odd... she represented the Church of England, European aristocracy (she had some German ancestry), stability and quiet dignity, I don´t think the U.S. are known for those. Don´t mean it in any bad way, just the values that make Britain great are very different from those that make the U.S. great. She had a sense of very dry humour, that´s not an American thing. And at the same time, she didn´t have as much appreciation for charismatic leadership, team spirit, democracy and pulling yourself up by the bootstraps as Americans have. I grew up singing "God save the Queen" and seeing her photo everywhere since I grew up in Canada and was in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. Canada has a long, long history with England and is part of the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II up until today was our Head of State and Queen of Canada. That's a wonderful thing to say! So many people all around the world appreciated how genuine and caring she really was. There's hardly a soul that can find many words to say that are not good, and full of praise. She took on an enormous role, almost unexpectedly at a young age. She made her vows and swore to upkeep them to the best of her ability, and kept them! There's few who could not respect her loyalty and sincerity. She rarely spoke out of turn, if ever. She loved her husband dearly, and now, after not so long, she joins him again. Goodbye dear Queen Elizabeth. Thank you from everyone who loved and admired you. You were a wonderful queen!

I agree. It came so suddenly. This morning the announcement HM QEII was placed under medical supervision, then this afternoon HM passed away peacefully. My condolences to the British Royal family, to the people of the UK, and to the people of the world. I know I will miss her very much. I never got to meet her, but I knew her through the media, and I loved her. I'm almost 68 years of age, and HM QEII was always Queen. I regarded her as the standard of what a lady should be.

She was like the whole 20th century in human form -- her first PM was Churchill. She had a strange, challenging life and lived it beautifully, and was 150% devoted to the almost impossible job of symbolizing a country with over a millennium of history. Such an admirable woman.
I recall that Lizzie had an Annus Horribilis one time. I think that was cured and she lived well after til the end.

As a German who has lived in the UK for over 11 years I can say that for me, HM The Queen has always been the epitome of integrity and duty. A beacon of humanity and hope. As she promised in her youth she has devoted her entire life serving country and commonwealth better than anyone else. My deepest condolences to the Royal Family and to the British public. She will not be forgotten.

She made a pledge at such a young age to serve her people her whole life and she did that and then some. She was a woman in charge long before it was even common for women to work. Such an inspiration. Faithful to her priorities and purpose for 70 years. Right to the end Queen Elizabeth II was fulfilling her duties - and then she passed away. It's exactly as she would want it: Getting on with it. I admired her perseverance in difficult times and her humble appreciation of the good times. She began at age 21 as the Monarch. She ended at age ninety six as a reliable, steadfast friend to millions around the world. She leaves a helluva legacy; she was a helluva woman. I've been hearing Frank Sinata sing "I'll Be Seeing You" all day. God bless Queen Elizabeth II. God save the King.

I liked everything you said very much, but I have reservations about Charles, and really can't help feeling resentful that Camilla should be made Queen. It's just not right. Our dear Queen wanted to make peace before departing, so she forgave her, in spite of never wanting her in the palace and on the balcony, for the sake of her son. She graciously stood aside whilst that woman elbowed her way in. Much as she disliked it! She had a more forgiving heart than many of us! Okay if they had left the crown and all the riches to marry, but they wanted it all! Her son does not have her majesty's conscience and honour! So, I'm not ready to say God save the King. Just bless the king of heaven !

The passing of the second Elizabethan Age. It is sad news, but not unexpected. She has been a part of our lives for so long and will be missed. R.I.P. Your Majesty. I have now lived through the reigns of four Monarchs. George V, Edward VIII, (Uncrowned), George VI and Elizabeth II. Now I'm at the beginning of the reign of Charles III. At 87, I don't think I will be around when William V ascends the throne. It depends on how long Charles lasts. From my birth in 1935, I have lived through so much History, inventions and World events. I can look back on so many memories, both good and bad. I just hope my faculties don't diminish too much in my remaining time, that will cause me to forget much of what I have experienced throughout my personal journey of life. As an old Chinese saying said, "May you live through interesting times.". Well, they've certainly been that.

The Queen suffered such a huge loss when Prince Philip passed last year. Ots not unusual for couples that have been so close for so long, that when one dies not long after their parner passes. God Bless the Queen.
Even my budgerigar and my granny's fell in love when Gangan went on holiday! She took hers away, and my one was found dead in a wastepaper basket under the cage a couple of days later. He was a bird someone found, and gave me. Very overweight and couldn't fly. He pushed the seed tray out, and squeezed through the gap. My verdict was unintentional suicide! He couldn't live without his ladylove!
