    06:34 The basics you take into account for other varieties as well
    Let’s take a look at the Ki Kikokuryu variety. Which is also referred to as the Dragon Koi Fish variety. In this video you will learn more about the ki kikokuryu and what you have to look for when you want to select a good kikokuryu.
    The variety is bred by using Kumonryu and Platinum ogon. In essence this koi is a kumonryu with the metallic from the platinum ogon. Hence this is the reason why thes kin is shiny.
    The base colour of ki kikokuryu is white with black on it. And ki means yellow in Japanese, this oftenly however becomes orange. Especially in more harder water alkalinity levels.
    Common for this variety is that it is very likely to change over time in its’ pattern. Even in only short periods of time the pattern can fluctuate in its appearance. Until the change of around 5 to 7 years old, then the pattern will start to stabilize. A detail which makes the variety also very interesting to follow during its’ development and growth over the next upcoming years.
    Note that it is very likely that this variety will become darker over the lifespan of the kikokuryu. The greyish or blueish areas will become darker black at a later age. Especially when the water temperatures are lower, in winter time, the black will be heavy. While in the summer period the black can almost fade away with higher water temperatures and growth.
    One of the originating breeders that started to breed this variety is Aoki in the Niigata area in Japan. Typical Aoki is breeding the more special varieties. Aoki is not focussing on what the major breeders in Japan breed and grow out: Kohaku, Sanke and Showa.
    Something typical for ki kikokuryu and beni kikokuryu is the shininess and luster of the skin. In the tail, dorsal fin and pectoral fins, actually all fins, shiny stripes can be spotted. In Japan the breeders call this ‘Pika’. The effect of Pika is especially very well visible in the sun and gives a very nice shiny effect.

    Thanks for this video it helped me identify one of my fish as one of these and explained why its black has faded now the water is warmer.

      Great to hear @Martin Chadler! Especially Kikokuryu are likely to change because of warmer water temperatures. Sumi can fade away and come back quickly as well. Great variety to follow during their development 👍

    Over the past two days I have watched all of your videos. Although I have never owned a koi and I do not have a pond, I am visiting all of the koi sale websites I can find and I am extremely disappointed with the quality I see, based on the training you have provided. Now that I know what to look for, nothing is good enough. You have turned me into a koi snob without owning a single koi!

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  Před 2 lety +1

      That is a funny story, i'm happy to hear you enjoy watching the video's. But hey, now it's time to prepare some plans for your first pond with Koi!

    • @tookmyhandle2
      @tookmyhandle2 Před 2 lety

      @@Aboutkoi I think you're right. I need a pond. I should move somewhere a little warmer first. I live in Massachusetts now. Boston is too cold for people and koi. It's -14c this morning.

    • @Aboutkoi
      @Aboutkoi  Před 2 lety

      That's indeed a bit at the cold side! That would probably be too cold as well when keeping them outdoors. You will need some way of heating, but that will be quite expensive

      @tookmyhandle2 Před 2 lety

      @@Aboutkoi it's too cold for people too. I should move.
      This is an academic argument of course. With all of my new koi selection training from you channel, no koi I see will ever be good enough to actually buy unless I travel to Japan. There is a company called Sacramento Koi, which has a channel on CZcams, that has respectable fish. I have a sneaking suspicion that the fish I like may be a few thousand dollars out of the beginner price range.

    You need better close ups when talking about scales/doitsu/markings.

      That indeed a good idea to do some close-up view
