Since Rothuss's book came out I have graduated uni, gone back and done another degree, got married, had a baby.....at this rate I'll be retired in a care home asking the carer "has he released it yet?"
I wish I could go back and read The Final Empire for the first time again. Love that book.
Ahh same here!
@@the_fools_tale Just finished book three of Locke Lamora, so dang good. Learned some great new swears.
also...best outro in the game.
Ahaha I need to finish those books! And thank you I do spend a lot of time on my outros
I’m gonna do that soon. What if my expectations are too high I’ve only heard great things 😂
My copy of Lamora is too tiny!
Excellent Video - Words of Radiance is my favorite SA book as well. I'm also a very big fan of the Evan Winter books, can't wait for more to come out.
Great reads! Thanks for sharing. There are a lot of books out there that most people haven't heard about that should get a lot more exposure. I recently read When Dying Is Not a Problem and truly enjoyed it.
Love your top 10! You’ve just reminded me to continue the storm light archive 😮😅 I hope book three of the burning is published soon. I loved rage of dragons and fires of vengeance so much!
I wonder if the reason why I don't love Sanderson's books as much as others seem to do is because I am older and my discovery of adult fantasy was Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. After that David Eddings. Can anyone relate?
Me. My favourite authors are Tad Williams, Robert Jordan, Joe Abercrombie, Robin Hobb, Carol Berg...Sanderson seems so bland
I think Sanderson just feels so positive/optimistic. Which sometimes I’m in the mood for and sometimes I’m not. I definitely enjoy it when I’m in the mood though.
Eddings is a ton of fun. I’m more into grimdark, sword & sorcery and gritty urban fantasy overall though.
Yes
Memory Sorrow Thorn and Realm of the elderlings all the way
I've only read The Final Empire but I don't consider it adult fantasy
Great list...glad it's a little different in places than might be expected. You;re not the only one hyping up Empire of the Vampire so it's definitely on my radar now. I recently started diving into Wheel of Time (on book 5 now) so that will take me several more months to finish but after that...I look forward to diving into some more (hopefully smaller lol) great series.
Ahaha yeah Wheel of Time is an undertaking. I’m on book 3. Just working through it slowly but steadily!
I really like that you put the Books mentioned in this video in the video description!!
Thank you!!
New Sub here!!
I agree with opening statement so much about certain books came along at the right time. Some of my favourite books I read when I was younger meant so much to me but nowadays I struggle with follow up books in the series.
The 4th book I read when I came back to reading after 10 years was The Way of Kings 😂. I was advised against it by a Brandon fan but I dove in and I loved it. I’ve now started reading mistborn a year and a half later. I’m glad I did it the way I did tbh. I’ve read over 30 books since then so it really sparked the love for reading in me again. I always advise people to start with Warbreaker now, as a sampler of Brandon. 😂
Yesss! Jumping in the deep in with that 1k page tome I love it haha
Great list, well-explained with witty asides. Bet your narrative will be much the same. If you can get your personality into your fiction, it'll fly.
Tolkien was my first adult epic fantasy, discovered when I was, oh, 12 or so. Spoiled me for much else but I loved the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series of mmpb books with wrap-around covers by Gervasio Gallardo, Ian Millar, & others. This skewed me toward older fantasy so I've yet to assay Sanderson, although I've read George Rail-Road Martin, just not his Game of Thrones stuff.
I'm listing your recommendations. Bravo.
I just finished all the cosmere books and have desperately been looking for something new to pique my interest, so this list was a godsend! Can't wait to check out some of these titles. Have you ever read the Lady Trent Memoirs? It's narrated in that retrospective style you mentioned enjoying in some of the books on this list. It's a pretty simple concept-- Victorian era Englishwoman who ends up pioneering the field of dragon naturalism--but it's just done so well and the writing style is an absolute treat, with the narrator commenting and critiquing her own past actions as she tells her story.
I’ve heard of them! I haven’t read them yet but they sound great
9 months late but if you haven't read it, please try Perdido Street Station. Underrated novel.
Love the list. You are far more optimistic that Rothfuss will not only come out with book three but that he will wrap up the threads. I felt book two brought more questions than answers. Loved his stuff. Hoping for another book. Some day.
I am pretty optimistic! But I get that people who read it when they released have lost some of that optimism haha. I’d probably be the same
@@the_fools_tale I remember reading the Wise Man's Fear back when it came out, and being excited for the Doors of Stone less and less every year ever since 😅
Rothfuss to me is worse than GRRM because at least you could say Martin got his HBO money and it made him lose his urgency to finish. Not sure what Rothfuss's excuse is, and I've seen him get pretty hostile when people ask about it which is a big turn off for me. Really sucks because the books are awesome.
Hi Andrew, thanks for your great channel. What 2 or 3 fantasy novels would you recommend to a fantasy newby before diving into LOTR? (besides the Hobbit, which I've already read). thanks! Brett
Oooooooo ok 👏 The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson, Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter, and Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill are all fantastic books to get into fantasy with
Great top ten! If you like Murderbot you will probably like the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers. It starts with The Long Way to an Angry Planet. Very good.
Anything that can be compared to Murderbot I will check out!
Some of my favorites:
1. Chronicles of Thomas Covenant
2. The Lost Book Of Swords
3. Wizard of Earthsea
4. Silverthorn (Magician) -by Feist
5. Xanth
6. Incarnations of Immortality
Love the review of your best 10 for modern fantasy. Not sure how many people would like this, but you should look back at 60's 70's 80's sci-fi books and fantasy books. A lot of good and bad books back then, but fun to review. I think some of the classic are getting lost in time....
I’ve only dabbled in fantasy from that time but definitely an area I want to try more of. I’ve heard great things about Gormenghast
I chuckle when people say they rever to Tolkein as 'adult fantasy' when I first read them at 12. I also tehn read Dune rhe first time so there you go.
I find it hard not to have LotR on my list. It is that worn out teddy bear that you love despite any flaws or your age.
But do have to put Malazan at my top.
More recent reads are the Second Apocalypse by Bakker. But I would recommend it to very few.
Black Company. Am in a reread now between books and I still love them.
Really liked Lies, just dont pay too much attention to the schemes.
Finally reading First Law, which is moving up my favorites list.
Ember Blade is 99 cents on kindle right now. Will pick it up to read when I go on vacation in a few weeks. Sounds right up my ally.
I've only just discovered your videos, so you might have read them, but have you read Kings of the Wyld and Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames? They are both incredible books. Even for someone like me who usually doesn't read a lot of fantasy.
I have heard of them but not read them yet! They sound like great fun
@@the_fools_tale I don't think you would be disappointed.
I loved the Ember Blade!
Loved this video
Thank you!
Awesome!!
Thank you for the video!!
You have piqued my interest about Murderbot!
But I am a bit confused, The Murderbot Diaries is a series and you say it is novellas, except maybe Network Effect?
Can Network Effect be read as a stand-alone? If not, which other(s) would be "needed" to be read in order to get introduced to the character and then enjoy Network Effect?
No you need to read them in publication order! Which is the 4 novellas and then Network Effect. They’re fantastic!
@@the_fools_tale Thank you very much for the reply! I think I am going to try them!
Nice list. I have a little suggestion, if you love LOTR, as I do, try the Sundering Duology by Jacqueline Carey, basically the plot of the LOTR but from the perspective of the other side. It is much better than it sounds. Ms. Carrey is a fantastic writer, her style is perfect for the theme. It is on my top ten list, easily. The books are praised by G R R Martin, which is how I learnt about them. Also, the Acts of Caine series by Mathew Stover, incredible blend of SF and fantasy and an absolutely awesome read. Scott Lynch is among the biggest fans of the series, citing it as key reference work whilst writing The Lies of Locke Lamora.
I haven’t heard of that but now I’m interested!
Ok you've finally convinced me to give Flames of Mira a chance due to the fact you haven't stopped banging on about it😉
Who me? Never heard of it
Intriguing list. The only books on it that I've read are the Cosmere ones, but I'm curious about some of the others and I'd like some advice on which one I should try out first.
Of the other books on this list, which one has the most significant sympathetic female presence? Female characters I can like and root for even if/though they aren't the protagonists? I'd like to read more books with male leads, but I'd prefer that women not be shoved into the background.
LOTR was a life-changer for me. There are many other fantasy series that I’ve liked very much, but nothing has approached LOTR for me. And yes I like Tom Bombadil too!
What are the white spine books, with the orange blue and red circles in the background. I feel like I see them on every booktubers bookshelf but no one ever grabs them when talking about their favorites.
That's The Licanius Trilogy by James Islington.
@@benlivingston8446 thanks!
@@Nick-yq5jf No problem! Personally I'd give the series probably about a 3 out of 5. Has some good ideas but suffers from pacing issues. Beautiful covers, though!
Yeah Licanius trilogy! It seems to be a hit or miss series. I’ve heard complaints with the pacing as well!
Do try Ordinary Monsters...and Dancing Jax trilogy!
I didn’t start reading fantasy until I randomly watched Daniel Green and Merphy’s booktube channels also. Since then, I’ve torn through a bunch of series.
Feel like Mistborn used to be everywhere in 2018-2020 and now its kinda fallen out of favour on booktube - but what an absolutely splendid time!
I don't really read any books but i didb already readed Hobbit and lord of the rings . But i fell it must be best book in history of mankind so i must ask is there any other book not only in the fantasy genre that is better than lotr like for real ?!? I feel like only reading Tolkien and all the other Books are not as good as lotr have the best story of all time
yiu should really read Christopher Paloini's (I'm not positive i spelled that right) Eragon and that trilogy, it is an amazing read, reads
My favorite speculative book list rarely changes 😅
Cool list
Top 10 fantasy books
1. LordOfTheRings
2. A Song of ice and fire GameofThrones
3. Memory Sorrow Thorn
4. Realm of the elderlings
5. Malazan
6. Stormlight
7. Harry Potter
8. Shannara
9. Sword of truth
10. The wheel of time
I really wish we would stop lumping Sci Fi and Fantasy together as one. That was fine back in the 60s and 70s when fantasy was "new" but now they are distinctly different categories.
That said, I am honestly surprised that Joe Abercrombie didn't make the list...
A few of My favorites: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama, Wonders of the invisible world by Christopher Barzak, The Goblin Emperor and Cemeteries of Amalo both by Katherine Addison
Goblin Emperor is on my radar! Hopefully I’ll get to it over summer
@@the_fools_tale 🤞
Vampire Empire 2 this year!
I must have been really drunk when I made this to exclude The Lies of Locke Lamaora and Titus Groan and... oh, it's the other Andrew Watson, who likes Brandy (Sanderson) more than I do. Good video, though.
Damn it other Andrew. What have I said about drinking and making fantasy lists. I did include Lies though!
I missed Lies on the list in the description. Glad you enjoyed it!
Great list. My list is bellow;
1. Lord of the Rings
2. The Dark Tower
3. The First Law
4. Shades of Magic
5. The Witcher Saga
6. His Dark Materials
7. The Old Kingdom
8. The Chronicles of Narnia
9. The Seven Realms
10. The Amulet series
Happy Reading
Great picks! The First Law is a series I need to get to this year
The first law trilogy!
Just started The Name of the Wind on a friend's recommendation. Hopefully Rothfuss doesn't die and leave Sanderson to ruin his trilogy.
Are you into joe Abercrombie yet ?
Where is your accent from ? :)
Sounds like Nebraska.
I’m from Scotland!
@@the_fools_tale cool ! Thanks for replying :)
@@the_fools_tale England are better 😏
You had me at “Scottish Lord of the Rings”.
This is a pro-Bombadil channel! 😂 no Tom hate!
[ETA] - omg the outro 😂
Exactly! No Tom slander here!
What is he saying? Idle fantasy Adle fantasy? I guess I don't understand ginger. Love the room! I'll subscribe.
I, too am #TeamTomBombadil
MALAZAN? DARK TOWER? , THE WITCHER? ... love tolkien and rothfuss too
Witcher is way overrated
@@user-pg3pe4gx4p YES
💜💜
Lord of the Ring doesn’t have a chosen one.. no clue why people always think it does.
Malazan and The Witcher are the two S-tier fantasy series that you don't have on your list.
I thought the Witcher was terrible. The writing is all over the place. Couldn’t stand the modern idiom.
LOTR is the best epic.
Robert E. Howard is the best action writer.
That NO 😆
Editor Andrew plays no games with filming Andrew
@@the_fools_tale 🤣🤣
Good video BUT when you introduce a book, you assume every person watching knows of the book already. No, I don’t for one. So when you hold it up, STOP WAVING IT ABOUT! Let us see the title and author long enough to register it.
