Yes!!! You hit the first two that I would always recommend to people getting into Rush - this song not only exemplifies what makes them special, but it also puts on display Alex's mastery of his craft. He is perhaps, criminally, the most under-rated guitarist. He's amazing... as they all are.

La Villa Strangiato is an instrumental piece that was based on a series of nightmares that Alex had. If you'd like to see him and Geddy really going off on their respective instruments, check out Working Man Live In Cleveland from their Time Machine Tour; if you'd like to see Neil really going off on his drums, check out YYZ Live In Rio, and his Live In Frankfurt Drum Solo from their R30 tour. I like your enthusiasm & appreciation of THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME!
I am a 48 year NO BIGGER FAN of The Great Triumvirate.
Other than the fine folk of Cleveland , Ohio there is NO ONE in the U.S. that has been a RUSH Fanatic longer than yours truly simply because my GF gave me their self-titled debut album as soon as it was released in the U.S. in June, 1974 by Mercury Records.
    I was 14.
The INSTANT the stylus contacted vinyl and I heard Geddy's voice be a PERFECT match for the incredible sound I was hooked for life. I still have that debut album 48 years later along with all of the others from the 70's & 80's & beyond.
It was a 4th instrument for the band. And yes you were correct. The BASS guitarist and vocalist is playing foot petal synth. AND playing BASS. AND SINGING. AND MOVING THE MIC WITH HIS NOSE.
    ALL AT THE SAME TIME!
They are simply the GREATEST musicians in one band IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC!
The drummer Neil Peart is acclaimed by 98% of ROCK fans as the GOAT.
During his heyday in the late 80's. Eddie Van Halen was asked during a press conference how it felt to be the GREATEST guitar player in the world. His reply?
"I don't know. You need to go ask Alex Lifeson"
    Three Polymaths.
I saw them twice. 1st time was January 15th, 1977 on the "All the World's a Stage" tour.
I was FRONT ROW CENTER WITH ARMS ON STAGE. I could have easily reached out & touched my heroes. Of course I did not. I was 16 & attended by myself.
To this day the best show I ever witnessed & I am 62. Back in the 70's EVERY arena show was General Admission seating which meant there were NO assigned seats. Which meant you arrive several hours before the doors open and wait at the entrance ALWAYS at the front of the line. Once the doors open it was tear your ticket and RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.
I saw them again in February 1980 on the Permanent Waves tour.
    MAGICAL

I would suggest the Live Working man in Cleveland next. But I feel any track you pick will be epic. wait till you listen to their full sided LP cuts. Enjoy the ride brother It's gonna be a long one. Rock on! Maddog @ DrumDragon Music Studio

Ya know I've seen a lot of reactions to this song. They are all good. Most are just your average person loving the music. A very few musiccal geinuises present a very cerebral explanation of the music. That is rare though. This is different. You are a bright dude, but this reaction is a physical/kinestethic expression of the music. I have never seen such a great expressive reaction to their music than this. Very unique. I am more stoic when I listen to this, but feel it all the way. Great job in your ability to naturally express what we all feel in this. Lavilla is my favorite Rush tune. Saw them live once.

  • @mattbaker5757
    @mattbaker5757 Před rokem

Yo ANKS! I just watched your Xanadu reaction and now La Villa Strangiato. Two of my favorite songs from my favorite band (discovered/rediscovered just a year ago*) Rush. I noticed that this channel is an occasional thing, sometimes months go by in between your videos. And believe me, if I started a channel like you, that's about as often as I'd have time for the channel as well!
I'm also a Tool fan, a band that was heavily influenced by Rush. And the bands were friends too! Actually, a trio band friendship between them and the Foo Fighters as well!. The Foo Fighters hosted Rush's 2013 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (must see!) with Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkin's introducing Rush and presenting them the award. They also dressed up as Rush and started playing one of Rush's songs and then Rush joins in.
And then last year when Taylor Hawkin's from the Foo Fighters (drummer, inspired by Neil Peart of Rush) died, Danny Carey (also inspired by Neil) played drums for Rush who played at Taylor's memorial tribute, due to Neil's death two years prior. Rush came out of retirement to do the tribute and asked Danny Carey to play with them as they knew only two drummers could fill Neil's role in the band; Taylor Hawkins and Danny Carey.
Anyway, back to Rush's discography! it's time for you to do another Rush reaction and I have a couple of suggestions. For another pure instrumental that will once again blow your mind, I recommend 'YYZ.'
Or, maybe you are in the mood for another story song like Xanadu? I recommend 'The Necromancer,' A guaranteed mind-bender.
How about some of their shorter "radio friendly" singles? You haven't reacted to any of them yet. I recommend Fly by Night,Tom Sawyer, Lime Light and Red Barchetta.
Maybe you'd rather cut to the chase and do a deep dive into one of Rush's 10-20 minute long rock "symphonies?" Then check out The Fountain of Lamenth, 2112, Cygnus X-1: Books I and II and Natural science.
Looking for a bit of Rush Metal? Check out Far Cry, Caravan, The Anarchist and Headlong Flight.
Maybe you want to see Rush's softer side? Check out Closer to the Heart, Time Stand Still, Halo Effect and The Garden.
Maybe you'd like to hear what a Canadian version of Led Zeppelin, with only three members would sound like? Check out Working Man, Finding My Way, Take Yourself a Friend.
If you are into 60's classic rock like The Yardbirds, Cream, The Who, Buffulo Springfield and others, and want to see just how talented and diverse and respectful of the original artist's work Rush can be, check out Rush's 2004 cover album FEEDBACK.
I'm subscribing now to keep abreast of your latest videos, especially Rush. I love how excited you are about the music when it is good, a man after my own heart.
*I knew of Rush and loved the dozen or so singles played on the radio back in the day, but I never looked into Rush further for what ever reason. Until last year when I rediscovered the singles from back in the day and discovering all the incredible music they made that didn't get played on the radio back then because it's far too long and deep for shallow radio.
A year and a couple thousand dollars later, and I own 16 of their 19 studio albums, multiple live albums and a few concert videos. The albums all audiophile quality remasters from original analog masters, using the direct to metal master (DMM) manufacturing technique, master made at half-speed and on 180-200 gram double-LP. I also bought a copy of them all on CD for listening on the road. I even upgraded my turn-table just to get the best sound out of the best records.
My final piece of advice, take the deep dive into Rush's discography sooner than later, or you will regret, even more, all the years of your life that you weren't listening to Rush. I first heard Rush in the early 80's on the radio, but never got around looking into Rush further, at around 14 years old, and continued to hear Rush my whole life, but only the half-dozen songs still played on classic rock radio. I missed out for 40 years of my life listening to the truly best music of Rush, the music I never heard on the radio, the songs you chose to react to first among songs I never heard on the radio. Discovering a Rush I never knew or imagined at age 54.
Over 180 songs in their discography. They are third, behind only The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in having the most consecutive gold or platinum albums, some triple and even quadruple platinum. A 40+ year career, first album released in 1974, last album in 2012, toured until 2015.

Great reaction, love how you get so into it! Rush were great at building feel into their songs, sometimes running hot, then creating a different atmosphere by bringing it down with a change of pace. Flawless transitions. That violin sound is accomplished using a volume pedal which Alex Lifeson uses like a volume knob on the guitar, but operated with his foot. He hits the string and eases up the volume for that smoothed out delivery.

You'll be waiting a very long time for that "intro" to end and the lyrics to start...go check out the genesis of this track by Alex Lifeson. Also, that part in the middle that sounds like its from a scary cartoon scene, is. The piece they borrow for that is called "Powerhouse", a jazz staple of the 30s and 40s, and was employed in cartoons quite often during scenes either of fast action or intense intrigue. Yes, they are compositional virtuosos, and no three band members have ever worked together better than these guys. Masters of transitions, unexpected timings, anything they can do to keep you drawn in, and it works.
