Anyone that have been around for the last 40 years like I have could honestly tell you there are three distinct sounds in the HBCU band world over the years. The mellow R & B concert sound & arrangements of FAMU & the uptemp, mellophone, intense high note trumpet, precision marching and brass sound arrangements of the Human Jukebox. If you put on a blindfold you can tell which band is which. Many bands in the SWAC and around the country INCLUDING J-STATE are leaning towards sounding like SU over the past 30 years. Many MEAC bands are sticking to their traditional full sounding arrangements. This is why SU always states "Often Imitated and Never Duplicated" The Human Jukebox invented the term "Crank". Many Louisiana and New Orleans high schools adopted this style years ago, which is why many HBCUs love to recruit from NOLA.
